Is the answer still in the machine: do publishers need digital rights management?

Has the challenge of unauthorized digital reproduction and distribution of copyright works been met by the use of so‐called ‘digital rights management’ (DRM) technology – and what role will DRM play in publishing, including scholarly journal and learned publishing? This article explores the legal and commercial issues surrounding DRM from its analogue origins through to the latest market developments. It argues that the implementation of DRM in other media sectors provides valuable lessons to publishers. Acknowledging the practical challenges that DRM has faced, the article suggests that whilst DRM will offer an answer to ‘the machine', it must form part of a flexible solution that adapts to the requirements of electronic publishing.

Scottish Archive of Print and Publishing History Records

‘It's important that we remember the past is not just dry facts and statistics but also the detailed lives of real people. SAPPHIRE aims to give a voice to these lives.’ The Scottish Archive of Print and Publishing History Records (SAPPHIRE), an initiative with Napier University as lead and Queen Margaret University College as main collaborative partner, is an oral history project which aims to record the social, economic and cultural heritage of the Scottish printing and publishing industry in the 20th century. Undertaken in partnership with a number of Scottish organizations, its results are providing a better understanding of an important and overlooked part of Scotland's heritage. Outcomes of the project include a permanent oral history archive stored at the Edward Clark Collection at Napier University, and exhibitions and publications on the history of the printing and publishing industry. The development and current activities of SAPPHIRE are described and reviewed.     

Plagiarism and piracy: a publisher's perspective

Examples of ‘plagiarism’ and ‘piracy’ are explored in the context of copyright legislation, and the practical role of ‘fair dealing’ is examined. The article shows how a tension exists at the heart of copyright: that between the ‘right of protection’ and the ‘right of communication’. It argues that this tension produces a business dynamic which publishers can exploit to their advantage and which means that piracy (even, and perhaps especially, in the electronic realm) can be regarded more as an opportunity than as a threat.     

The immunologist and the Internet—a tale of the tortoise and the hare?

Further in our series on the response of learned societies to electronic publishing possibilities, this article describes the present use made of the Internet as a relatively new phenomenon for many of Britain’s immunologists, and considers how its use might develop in the future.

Challenges Facing the UK Book Industry

This abstract examines the challenges facing the UK publishing industry, as well as the opportunities brought by the advent of digital. The article makes reference to key facts and statistics which illustrate the value of the market, and the publishing market is discussed in terms of its categories: consumer publishing, academic and STM publishing, and children’s publishing. The importance of copyright to the business and the developing role of the publisher are examined, as are industry initiatives taking place in the UK to help raise awareness of the diminishing bricks and mortar retail sector. The work performed by publishers and authors participating in initiatives tackling illiteracy and encouraging reading for pleasure as an activity is discussed.

CD-ROM project management: A case study

This article describes a CD-ROM test disc project planned to gain firsthand knowledge of the production process, and to deliver a disc that will be used to analyze the potential market for full-text publications on CD-ROM. It describes getting started in the field, details the project planning process, and explains how to gather resources, schedule the project, and develop a work breakdown schedule. In this kind of project,task definition andcollaboration with other organizations are the crucial components for success. Virginia Meade led the team that produced Bellcore’s first CD-ROM disc. She has worked as a senior project manager in the Information Management Services division at Bellcore for the past three years, and chaired the Information Technology district’s electronic publishing services group. Abstract

Although widely adopted at university and college libraries in the United States, Electronic Reserve services in Canada have developed at a much slower pace. Based on the results of an extended pilot project for Electronic Reserves at a medium-sized university library in Canada, the author concludes that the most significant barrier to this development is the restrictive nature of copyright law in Canada. Results of an informal survey of university libraries in Canada seem to confirm this assumption. A brief overview of copyright law in Canada as it pertains to Electronic Reserves is discussed, as is the process of copyright reform recently undertaken by the Canadian government. Finally, an argument in favor of a broadened interpretation of ‘fair dealing’ (the Canadian version of ‘fair use’) is made as it may pertain to the development of Electronic Reserves services in Canadian academic libraries.     

No such thing as a mature journal

This article looks at the general idea of developing journals by adding value. It focuses in particular on the notion of the ‘mature journal’ – possibly a mythical beast, but one which most publishing houses will have at least one of (even if they don't know it yet). The article touches on some run‐of‐the‐mill journal issues such as obesity, sex, and death, but will hopefully also throw new light on a corner of the publishing world previously thought of as ‘dull’.

论中国古代图书凡例中的植入广告

中国明清时期图书出版者充分利用凡例位于一书卷首这一位置优势,在其中植入各种广告。坊刻小说之外,与科举考试关系较为密切的经义、类书、史书、总集以及子部中偏实用的如术数、医学类图书的凡例中也多植广告。这些广告包括夸耀性广告语辞、征稿广告、刻书预告以及版权警示语等,表达方式分直陈式与比较式,而后者尤见宣传技巧。图书出版史上的凡例广告对于当下图书出版业者仍有一定启示作用。

Rich HTML可通过内容分析、知识标引,以及文字、图、表的结构化,实现碎片化条件下的深阅读。文章对Rich HTML的基本原理、特点及其在国内外医学期刊中的应用情况进行了研究,同时结合《检验医学》应用Rich HTML进行网络传播的实践,分析目前中文医学期刊在应用Rich HTML中存在的人员资金、链接版权、功能拓展等问题,以期为Rich HTML在医学期刊网络出版中的应用提供参考。     

Virtual realities in Brobdingnag and Lilliput: gulfs and bridges between large and small publishers

This article argues that the trend towards larger and larger publishing conglomerates is happening in parallel with apparently paradoxical changes in attitudes and approaches towards work and the organization of work. These changes, include for example remote working and the increasingly powerful potential of ‘outsourcing’. Looking at a publishing environment now populated mainly by very large and very small companies, the article suggests a symbiotic relationship between these giants and pygmies. It then looks at major characteristics of small publishers and how such companies can exploit the advantages of smallness to survive and succeed. The specific case of IP Publishing Ltd is used to illustrate some options for small publishers, including their opportunity to operate as ‘virtual’ companies. Finally, the article suggests that small companies can be useful to large corporations as indicators of change.     

Copyright: past,present and future

Copyright has developed over the years from an instrument of taxation and censorship to a complex set of rules, primarily to protect the creator, but now having to grapple with cyberspace. This article examines that development, and looks at some of the arguments for and against the existence of copyright. It is argued that copyright is flexible enough to cope with the electronic world. The article examines the lessons learned from the past, and asks whether the Gowers Report helps or hinders. The author also raises the question ‘what is the future of copyright?’, given the intense interest not just of the UK government but also of the European Commission, which is determined to provide a ‘level playing‐field’ across the countries of the EU. Lastly, the author examines the five main pressure points relevant to the future of copyright and asks who the publisher of the future will be.
