Visual Communication in the Workplace: A Survey of Practice

This article reports the results of a survey of professional writers about the nature and importance of visual communication in their work. The results confirm the suggestions in the field's literature that visual communication is important to workplace practice and that the role of the professional writer has expanded beyond the domain of the verbal. Visual communication responsibilities are complex and varied, but the practitioners surveyed typically engage in substantial amounts of design-related work and value visual communication abilities. The data suggest that visual communication should be a curricular priority in professional writing programs.     

Solutions to Literacy Deficiencies in the Workplace; A Survey of Current Practices

Much attention has focused on employee basic skill (literacy) problems in recent years. Most authorities on the topic have focused their attention on two solutions alone: (a) offering in-house training to employees short-term solution intended to rectify existing basic skill deficiencies in the workforce; and (b) supporting public education as a long-term solution intended to ensure that future job applicants/employees possess basic skills adequate for beginning work. Few writers or authorities have suggested alternative performance improvement strategies to address basic skill problems. This article identifies a range of performance improvement strategies for addressing basic skill deficiencies and summarizes results of a recent survey of training and development professionals about how often these strategies are used in their organizations. In general, many survey respondents indicated that their organizations are using many different performance improvement strategies to address basic skill problems.     

从教学实践角度谈汉字图形的视觉传达设计

汉字不仅具有记录信息、传承文化等功能,而且展现出了内涵之美、结构之美与形态之美。将汉字图形元素运用到视觉传达设计当中,对于提升视觉传达设计作品审美性具有重要意义。本文对汉字图形在视觉传达设计中的美学价值做出分析与论述,从教学实践角度对汉字图形在标志设计以及平面广告设计中的运用做出了研究与探讨。     

系统论视阈中的儒学定位

以系统论的方法分析,儒学理论是一个以“道”为核心,并逐次展开、实现“道”的系统。就理论本身而言,儒学理论是一个自身完善的系统。可是,儒学理论在与现实政治的相互关系中,它必须作出一定的调整。在调整中,儒学有背离“道”的可能。如果仅在道德修养领域,儒学的价值是应予充分肯定的。     

解读平面图形设计的视觉符号化

平面设计的过程是一个将创意视觉化、符号化的过程，思维根据设计意象对视觉元素进行挑选、变换、组合，将视觉元素进行有机的关联、编码，使之形成特定的符号系统。本文在总结图形、符号和设计等相关概念的基础上。阐述了平面图形设计与符号的本质联系，论述了符号在平面图形设计中的应用方式。     

关于儿童异性同伴交往的调查研究

异性同伴交往是儿童同伴交往的内容之一,通过对常州市区两所小学三、四、五年级学生的问卷调查,发现儿童在异性冲突、异性竞争及异性合作过程中都存在着较明显的年级差异和性别差异。     

大数据时代下视觉传达设计创意课程教学逻辑的创新与实践

在大数据时代背景下,视觉传达设计人才的培养具有新的要求。本文从教学逻辑的角度出发,依托大数据提供的众多优势,研究视觉传达设计创意课程教学逻辑的创新与实践方法。

This article reports the results of a case study of two maps, produced by the National Marine Fisheries Service and the Natural Resources Defense Council, and their involvement in a federal court case over the deployment of the Navy's low-frequency active sonar. Borrowing from Kress and van Leeuwen's (1996) approach to visual analysis, Turnbull's (1989) understanding of the map, and Latour's (1990) understanding of how visuals work in social contexts, the article offers an analytical approach to studying maps as powerful visual, rhetorical objects.

消防机器人视觉感知技术研究综述

视觉感知是消防机器人获取、分析与理解火场环境信息的重要手段,是实现预定消防作业功能的重要基础.文章首先介绍了常用视觉传感器的特点以及基于这些传感器的消防机器人视觉系统组成结构,和实现消防机器人视觉系统控制,视觉信息处理的常用处理器以及相应的系统特性;从火焰检测、人体检测、障碍物检测三个典型方面概述了视觉信息处理算法的发展现状.最后,总结了消防机器人视觉感知技术当前发展中存在的三方面不足,并以此阐述了其未来发展趋势.     

Teaching Computer-Mediated Visual Communication to a Large Section: A Constructivist Approach

A constructivist approach to teaching encourages students to seek answers for themselves, while the instructor acts as a guide and facilitator as students pursue information gathering and knowledge construction. In a large class, it is difficult to use a constructivist model of education simply because of the number of students involved. This article discusses how a university instructor was successful in creating a constructivist learning environment in a large class section.     

Visual Aids and the Enhancement of Communication in Africa

Educational visual aids and illustrations in African institutions are mostly imported from overseas, and the few local productions tend to be Western‐orientated in style. However, research on the technical and design elements of visual aids, their cultural implications and socio‐economic factors all point to considerable differences of perception and interpretation of visuals between African and Western students. The paper discusses these differences and considers their implications to designers and producers of learning materials for African students.     

Student Visual Communication of Evolution

Despite growing recognition of the importance of visual representations to science education, previous research has given attention mostly to verbal modalities of evolution instruction. Visual aspects of classroom learning of evolution are yet to be systematically examined by science educators. The present study attends to this issue by exploring the types of evolutionary imagery deployed by secondary students. Our visual design analysis revealed that students resorted to two larger categories of images when visually communicating evolution: spatial metaphors (images that provided a spatio-temporal account of human evolution as a metaphorical “walk” across time and space) and symbolic representations (“icons of evolution” such as personal portraits of Charles Darwin that simply evoked evolutionary theory rather than metaphorically conveying its conceptual contents). It is argued that students need opportunities to collaboratively critique evolutionary imagery and to extend their visual perception of evolution beyond dominant images.
