AbstractThe promotion of ‘Global Citizenship’ (GC) has emerged as a goal of schooling in many countries, symbolising a shift away from national towards more global conceptions of citizenship. It currently incorporates a proliferation of approaches and terminologies, mirroring both the diverse conceptions of its nature and the socio-politico contexts within which it is appropriated. This paper seeks to clarify this ambiguity by constructing a typology to identify and distinguish the diverse conceptions of GC. The typology is based on two general forms of GC: cosmopolitan based and advocacy based. The former incorporates four distinct conceptions of GC – namely, the political, moral, economic and cultural; the latter incorporates four other conceptions – namely, the social, critical, environmental and spiritual. Subsequently, we briefly illustrate how the typology can be used to evaluate the critical features of a curriculum plan designed to promote GC in England. The typology provides a novel and powerful means to analyse the key features of the very diverse range of educational policies and programmes that promote GC. 相似文献

Can democracy be expanded beyond borders? For many years, it was taken for granted that the norms and values of democracy could be applied within the boundaries of a state only. But over the last 20 years, it has been increasingly argued that democracy can also inform international organizations and global politics. This article recapitulates the foundations of cosmopolitan democracy, a project of normative political theory developed since the early 1990s. The article also explores the possibility of moving towards cosmopolitan democracy in specific domains such as: (1) the development of a global rule of law; (2) the direct participation of stake-holders in trans-border political decisions; and (3) the possibility of giving voice to citizens through a World Parliamentary Assembly. The paper finally explores how citizenship education can use cosmopolitan democracy and, at the same time, provides a model of it. 相似文献

ABSTRACT Cosmopolitanism has become an influential theory in both political and, increasingly, educational discourse. In simple terms cosmopolitanism can be understood as a response to the globalised and diverse world in which we live. Diverse in nature, cosmopolitan ideas come in many forms. The focus here is on what have been termed ‘strong’ ethical forms of cosmopolitanism; that is, positions which conceptualise moral bonds and obligations as resulting from a shared, common humanity. The view that pupils should be taught that all human beings are equal and, crucially, that this entails a responsibility to take action when human equity is challenged or transgressed, is finding increasing expression within educational literature. The suggestion explored here is that strong forms of ethical cosmopolitanism are limited in ways which seriously restrict their educational worth. In the final section, it is argued that forms of cultural and political cosmopolitanism (which are part of the lived experiences of intra- and supra-national citizenship) are best responded to by developing the requisite virtues in pupils to engage with diverse and dialogic communities. 相似文献

This paper examines national-level strategies concerning internationalisation of education and the extent to which global citizenship is deployed in their discourse. We focus on a cross-national comparison of selected internationalisation strategies in Australia, Canada, Ireland, the UK and the USA, all countries with highly developed economies and a relatively high proportion of the market share of international students. We draw on a thematic textual analysis and the use of corpus technologies to explore the framing of discourses and language use in each strategy. Our comparative analysis of national strategies highlights a dominant approach to international education that is primarily competitive in its orientation, with national interest as the key driver. This cross-national comparison also revealed considerable variation in framing of strategic internationalisation on a discourse level. Based on findings, we argue that internationalisation strategies limit the possibilities of advancing central tenets of global citizenship. 相似文献

This study examines student teachers' views on their country and on National Education (NE), with the aim of promoting teachers' understanding of the need for NE. A 40-item survey was administered to 1,650 student teachers, to assess their sense of belonging, protective attitude, perceived right, ethnic tolerance and community and political involvement, as well as their perceptions of the importance and learning outcomes of NE. Significant differences were observed between the genders and between the various programme groups in terms of the student teachers' responses, suggesting the need for a more comprehensive approach to NE in initial teacher education. 相似文献

当前地方高校教育技术学专业学生的就业形势非常严峻,已经到了需要做出深入反思的程度。这一现象的出现虽然有客观原因,但更多的是地方高校教育技术学专业自身因素造成的。其中培养目标、学科定位、课程设置和教学方法等都存在较大偏差。地方高校教育技术学专业的培养目标需更加注重应用型人才的复合性,学科定位应更加注重理论指导下的实践,课程设置需更加注重理论指导下的技能性,教学方法需要更加注重案例教学。 相似文献

The authors, one from China and one from the United States, present a theoretical framework for understanding the discursive fields of citizenship education as composed, in large part, of the discourses of nationalism, globalization, and cosmopolitanism. The framework is illustrated by examples from citizenship education in China and the United States. Citizenship education in these examples is largely influenced by the discourse of nationalism. The discursive fields are fractured, context-specific, and dynamic. In conclusion, the authors call for awareness of how these discourses operate, and propose that the discourses of globalization and cosmopolitanism merge and strengthen within citizenship education. The effect could be a new citizenship education that is responsive to the current needs of local and global democratic communities. 相似文献

This paper proposes a conceptual model of education for global citizenship by drawing on the literature on international student mobility for higher education. This model outlines the kinds of competencies and forms of consciousness that education for citizenship should focus upon so as to address the economic and moral dilemmas of living in a globalising world. ABSTRACTThe global middle class (GMC) is a theoretical construct that seeks to globalise a set of attributes identified in studies of school choice in the global north, and to a lesser extent in developing nations in Asia. As theorised by Ball a mobile middle class with cosmopolitan sensibilities drives international education options in global cities. This proposition is challenged through analysis of the histories of curriculum and class relations in two national settings (Australia and Brazil) and examination of contemporary class profiles (i.e. economic and cultural properties) in expanding forms of international education in these countries. The paper argues that the forms of cosmopolitanism associated with the educational practices of the GMC must be examined within broader historical relationships of cultural domination. We conclude by arguing that broadening the historical horizon is an important exercise to challenge the claim of the GMC to be a novel category involving exceptional forms of cultural contact generated by the dynamics of the ‘global city’. 相似文献

影响20世纪中国教育的国家主义教育理想直接来源于18-19世纪欧洲现代民族国家在形成时所产生并依赖的国家主义及其教育理想,是欧洲近代日益高涨的国家主义教育理想在中国独特社会背景下的进一步发展,并与欧洲各国国家主义教育理想一脉相承,交相辉映.国家主义教育理想对20世纪中国教育的支配性影响是全方位、多方面的,不同历史时期的国家主义教育理想有着不同的性质和内容.国家主义教育理想在20世纪中国现代教育产生和发展过程中也存在着不少值得关注的学术论争,主要集中在国家主义与国际主义、国家主义与个人主义、国家主义与平民主义、国家主义与人文主义等几方面.在21世纪,国家主义教育理想对于中国大陆的教育改革与发展来说依然有其合法性与正当性,同时应该适应全球化时代的挑战,融合世界主义的理念、关怀与责任. 相似文献
