Dos and Don'ts in America-美国文化点滴 Living in a different culture sometimes can be stressful. The term "Culture Shock" is often used to describe a person's excitement, confusion, frustration, and eventual adaptation when getting into a new culture from his home culture. "Culture" includes many aspects, which can range from things as small as the way people drink coffee in the morning, to how they design their houses, and to things as big as their perceptions on the world-their philosophies. Today, let's chat a bit about  相似文献

This is Alaska, which might as well have been a different country. Seeing the Alaskan Wildlife for the First Time Early morning is the best time to see the brown and black bears. They usually come here to fish for 1)salmon. There were a surprising number of people at the 2)walkway.We sat down by the bridge, looking at the salmon as they 3)raced.In fact, salmon could be found almost anywhere in Alaska, and for a bargain price.I turned my attention to wondering about this miracle of nature.  相似文献

生活的乐趣
Joy in living comes from having fine emotions, trusting them, giving them the freedom of a bird in the open.Joy in living can never be assumed as a pose or put on from the outside as a mask.People who have this joy do not need to talk about it;they radiate it.They just live out their joy and let it splash its sunlight and glow into other lives as naturally as a bird sings. We can never get it by working for it directly. It comes, like happiness,to those who are aiming at something higher. It is a b…  相似文献

American eating is funny. They eat almost everything with a fork, and it appears that holding a knife in one's right hand longer than a few seconds is considered to be against good table manners. The system is that if it is absolutely necessary to use a knife, people take the fork in their left hand, and cut off a piece of meat or whatever it is in the normal manner. Then they put the knife down, transfer the fork tO their right hand, and only then do they transport the food to their mouth. This, is clearly funny, but it is considered good manners.  相似文献

They say the best lesson in swimming is to be thrown into the deep end and told to fend for yourself. The sink or swim technique, they call it. A tad callous, if you imagine the tears of all the mothers of learners who regrettably did not make it. And there is a question arising: is the harsh pedagogy not a result of the teachers own lamentable experiences as learners? Were they once kicked off the safe edge to splutter and thrash around, feeling panic lest they sink irrevocably to the bottom?  相似文献

Is that flower? Or is it a bird?Actually, it is a bird. The Blue-Crowned Pigeon is strange in many ways. The largest of all pigeons, the crowned pigeon may grow to be nearly as big as a turkey. They have snowy blue and white plumes on their crowns. Both the mother and father birds make milk for the young. Usually there are 2 eggs per nest, but they raise two or more broods each year. They satisfy their appetites with seeds, berries, fallen fruit, and insects. I hope you like this freaky bird.  相似文献

Last time we talked about baby animals such as pups of dogs, kittens of cats, chicks of chickens, and ducklings of ducks. As I sat down to write this column, I saw some of my old squlrrelsI friends sneaking into my backyard and climbing onto the bird feeder2 to steal bird food again. They are cute but can also be a big headache, because they scare the birds a way and they eat a lot. They can finish within an hour the monthly supply that I put out for the birds. These squirrels must also be taking some of the food back to their babies, and I am wondering--what are baby squirrels called? Ah, they are called--are you ready-- pups or kittens, just like baby dogs and cats.  相似文献

Life is more and more like a gambling game, as some people claimed. They loiter and dally every day, never expecting to make any difference with their own strength. Believing in lottery wealth, or quickly-rising fame, they don't think the choices they make will change their destined fate. When faced with predicaments and adversities, we may be tempted to agree on their belief. Nevertheless, this notion is somewhat specious as far as I'm concerned.  相似文献

A new English teaching approach,WholeLanguare Teaching holds that language is a wholeand should be taught and leamd as a whloe.Thisphilosophy is now gaining ground in the UnitedStates.WLT advocates student-oriented,mean-ingful,functional and integrated instructionwhich combines the authentic use of language with direct instruction. Although the majority of thework focuses on US elementary or high schoolclassrooms, there is something in it that is new, creative and imaginative. So the idea can be bor-rowed and applied to the EFL teaching in a Chi-nese context.1. FEASIBILITY We teach adult students. Generaly speaking, they are bright and capable, in their 20 's or early30's. Their linguistic level is about intermidiate orupper-intermediate, approximately equivolent tothat of US high school students. They can readquite comprehensibly. However, they have diffi-culty in expressing themselves orally. Matured andhighly motivated, they possess a strong desire toimprove themselves, especially in speaking. And the t  相似文献

Some people do not like anything to be out of place. They are never late for work; they return their books to the library on time; they remember people's birthdays;and they pay their bills(帐单) as soon as they arrive, and Mr Dodds is such a person.Mr Dodds works in a bank, and lives on his own. The only family he has is in the next town: his sister lives there with her husband, and her son, Mark. Mr Dodds doesn't see his sister or her family, from one year to the next, but he sends them Christmas cards, and he has not forgotten any one of Mark's seven-  相似文献

The shell burst, and the five peas rolled out into the bright sunshine. There they lay in a child's hand. The little boy said they were fine peas for his pea-shooter.And immediately he put one in and shot it out."Now I am flying out into the wide world," said the pea, "Catch me if you can," and he was gone in a moment."I," said the second, "want to fly straight to the sun." And went away."We will go to sleep wherever we find ourselves," said the two next, "We shall still be rolling onwards," They felt on the floor, and roll about before they go into the pea-shooter;but they were put in it. "We shall go farther than the others," said they."What is to happen will happen," said the last,as he was shot out of the pea-shooter;and as he spoke he flew up against an old board under a window of an old house, and fell into a little crevice. The moss closed round him,and there he lay.  相似文献

Have you ever seen a movie in which a building was burned down or a bridge was destroyed? Have you seen films in which a train crashed or a ship sank into the ocean? If so, you may have wondered how these things could happen without harming the people in the film. The man who knows the answer is the special-effects man. He has one of the most important jobs in the film industry. He may be ordered to create a flood or to make a battlefield explode. And he may also be asked to create a special effect which is much less exciting, though just as important to the sue-  相似文献

Sister Carrie is the young protagonist of the novel of the same name who moves from Wiscons to Chicago and accomplishes her rise to aristocracy in the cutthroat city environment. This novel mainly depicts this girl’ s metamorphosis. At first, she is no more than a poor bumpkin. However,in the end,she unexpectedly transforms into a glamorous actress.Yet,things by no means are as idealized as they appear to be.On the contrary,it is a process of struggle along with degeneration.  相似文献
