Offering a separate, popular reading collection can be a valuable public service in academic libraries. Popular reading is also known as leisure reading, recreational reading, and reading for pleasure. These phrases are synonyms for an interest in reading bestsellers, mysteries, romance novels, biographies, graphic novels, humor, self-help, or popular nonfiction, among other literature categories. This article examines the survey data of popular reading collections in the public universities of three southeastern states. It also discusses the popular reading collection at the author's library, also located at a southeastern public university, and analyzes the data from both circulation records and a survey of more than 100 patrons who used the collection during the fall 2008 semester. 相似文献

Ross Housewright, a Research Analyst at Ithaka S+R (http://www.ithaka.org/ithaka-s-r/) delivered the keynote address at the E-Resources Symposium at Mississippi State University on September 16, 2010. Housewright challenged traditional thinking about collection and preservation activities in the academic library setting. [目的/意义]探究目前我国图书馆开展科普阅读推广活动的实践案例及服务特色,以期为业界开展更优质丰富的科普阅读推广活动提供参考。[方法/过程]以第二届科普阅读推广案例征集活动获奖的20所图书馆为调研对象,通过调查各个图书馆官网、微信公众号及相关网站获取关于科普阅读推广活动的信息,选择部分图书馆进行实地考察及采访,深入探究这些图书馆所开展的所有科普阅读推广实践活动,并着重分析其中3个特色案例。[结果/结论]针对今后我国图书馆科普阅读推广活动的进一步开展提出如下思考与建议:基于读者需求,贴近实际生活;丰富活动项目,创新主题内容;关注弱势群体,惠及全体市民;寻求多方合作,提高活动质量;强化新媒体运用,推进数字化建设等。 相似文献

Museum education collections are inarguably a part of a museum's actual collection, just as are the research/permanent collections. However, past practices indicate that education collections are typically not given equal stature in museological terms. This paper argues that techniques and practices used with research/permanent collections should be applied to education collections, a viewpoint that has not yet been readily embraced. Several methods are addressed for upgrading an education collection to a level similar to a museum's permanent collection. The Lubbock Lake Landmark's education collection serves as a case study to demonstrate the need for the application of proper museological techniques to conform to best practices. A scope of collection was created, preventive conservation techniques were applied, a gap analysis was performed, and legal issues concerning the education collection were addressed. 相似文献
