The proliferation of electronic information sources has added new dimensions to building library reference collections. As reference librarians select titles for their collections, they must also choose the most appropriate medium. For some information the choices include print, microforms, CD-ROM databases, online hosts, or locally mounted databases. Factors involved in the selection of the appropriate medium include database costs, licensing agreements, hardware/software requirements, retrieval modes, system capabilites, and information transfer. Integrating the new services into existing structures so that library patrons can derive the maximum benefit from the availability of the databases is a primary concern.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Comic books and graphic novels are a common part of public library collections. This research used quantitative survey methodologies to investigate the library-based behaviors and attitudes of attendees of a large metropolitan comic book convention. The intent is to provide context for librarians interested in patron outreach through comic cons. Results found that comic con attendees are library patrons, and provided clues for other types of outreach to related populations.  相似文献

Summary

Although much has been written on technophobia and how it can be treated, little has been published on how the reference librarian can help. Limiting the time spent introducing new technologies, speaking without using computer jargon, offering instruction through different learning styles, and preparing patrons to deal with the problems they encounter are a few of the strategies the reference librarian can do to help patrons deal with their fear of computers. This article examines and defines technophobia, offers short-term strategies that reference staff can use to alleviate the anxiety of their technophobic patrons, and finally touches upon long-term solutions and changes that can be made within the library environment itself.  相似文献

Reference librarians have been concerned about reference performance for many years. Evaluation and study have produced statistics and guidelines but not procedures for service. Many studies dwell on failure of the librarian but offer no process for systematic remediation of reference inaccuracy. Librarians should study more closely the successful patron's approach to the reference encounter and shift the emphasis of their concern and training to perfecting the delivery of service. Service industries have long known that the skill in delivering a service is often as important as the service itself. Predictive analytics and machine learning are burgeoning areas of professional practice for large corporations especially businesses that offer products and services to customers. The power to better understand the movement of large amounts of data in a company and the capability to deploy that data to meet a customer's needs is invaluable from a services standpoint. Some in libraries have theorized that this type of data usage could possibly be used in a library service environment as well. In this article, we demonstrate how you can develop and use machine learning algorithms and predictive analytics to proactively understand library behavior. Although libraries are good at data collection, we often rely on statics or old data for assessment. Utilizing a machine learning system, called the Automated Library Information Exchange Network (ALIEN), we can better understand the movement of the items in the collection and better serve the needs of our customers the library patrons.  相似文献

Oregon State University Libraries piloted a one-year interlibrary loan purchase on demand service beginning in February 2009. An online survey was used to measure patron satisfaction and determine future borrowing and recommendation behavior. These results, along with patron comments, were used to explore future success of the service and ways to enhance the permanent service. Results provide context for the success of purchase-on-demand programs and support the development of innovative tools that increase the efficiency of purchase-on-demand workflow. Oregon State University Libraries permanently adopted the successful service and is working to incorporate patron input on purchase decisions.  相似文献

Health sciences libraries are often challenged to make decisions regarding physical space allocation without quantitative data to support specific user preferences. This multisite, longitudinal study sought to answer the following questions related to academic health sciences libraries: (1) Which library spaces are popular with health sciences patrons? (2) How does time of day and allocated seating space affect patron choices? (3) What similarities and differences occur in space usage across four different health sciences libraries? Results suggest health sciences libraries must develop a nuanced understanding of their patrons’ preferences to best serve patrons’ needs regarding space allocation. Libraries can benefit from these types of methodological studies that target specific populations, supporting more informed space allocation decision making.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The Education, Job and Computer Center is a unique resource center which is located in the Central Library of the Brooklyn Public Library. The mission of this division is to provide the people of Brooklyn with the print and electronic resources that they can use to further their education or to seek employment. In the past year, the Education, Job and Computer Center served over ninety-five thousand individuals.

The Education, Job and Computer Center (EJCC) receives an average of 300 queries a week from patrons seeking information on employment, job training or educational opportunities. As a way to respond to many identical requests, the EJCC staff has created a series of twenty referral lists. Subjects covered by these lists include GED or ESL classes; services to immigrants, services for older adults, youth, women and ex-offenders; job placement or job training centers; and small business assistance programs.

The referral lists are updated annually. They can be picked up in the EJCC, or mailed to patrons upon request. The EJCC also supplies copies of the lists to the Brooklyn Public Library branches and to many community based organizations in the New York City area. Last year a total of 125,000 copies of the referral lists were produced.  相似文献

Millennials are a highly researched generation, but special libraries may have not updated their services to reflect the needs and expectations of this rising generation. Summary

Faculty members depend on the resources and services provided by the libraries to teach, satisfy the curricular needs of the students, and conduct their research. Students need the library for many reasons, among which are to complete their assignments and to expand on what faculty covers in class. The patron/librarian relationship in the academic library is not always perfect. Issues which students and faculty face in the academic library environment are completely different from those in the public library. Identifying the characteristics of the difficult or problem patron in academia is a little more difficult than in the public library. Are what librarians face when dealing with faculty and students more issue-related than just dealing with problem patrons? The authors will identify, from the librarians' perspectives, some of these often called difficult patron issues and offer solutions to try and preempt these issues before they become problems.  相似文献

Reference departments track patron interactions to illustrate the type and number of services provided as well as to tailor librarians’ time and expertise to the interest and needs of their patrons. Until 2010 the Reference, Education, and Community Engagement Department at the Calder Memorial Library tracked statistics using a complicated system of paper tic sheets and two Excel? spreadsheets. After considering different electronic systems, the department decided to employ an electronic form created with SurveyMonkey? to track patron interactions. After the system had been in place for three months, the authors administered a satisfaction and use survey to collect faculty and staff feedback on the new system. Seven months later the authors undertook usability testing to collect further evaluative data on the electronic form. The patron interaction form continues to be used to collect statistics, provide data for annual reviews, and recognize the contributions of all faculty and staff at the library.  相似文献
