From budget allocation to collection development: A system for the small college library

Research has shown that faculty involvement in library collection development is directly proportional to the size of the library collection itself; specifically, as library collection size increases, faculty involvement in library collection development decreases. Conversely, the opportunity for faculty involvement in library collection development is enhanced in the small-college setting where collection development is a collaborative effort between the faculty, who serve as the counterparts of subject bibliographers in larger university settings, and librarians, who both oversee the collection development process and serve as bibliographers in general and interdisciplinary subject areas. The case study documents the collection development philosophy, selection and acquisitions policies, and accounting procedures used at the Iris Holt McEwen Library and LaRose Resources Center at Elon College in North Carolina. The interrelatedness of selection, acquisition, and accounting processes as well as the collaboration between librarians and faculty in collection development are emphasized. A time line for the collection development process is included.     

Collection development for new librarians: Advice from the trenches

There are many challenges facing new librarians in the academic environment, including collection development. This article analyzes the topic of collection development and how it relates to new professionals in the field of librarianship. The article contains a literature review of papers discussing the collection development curriculum in library and information science programs, expected skills required of collection development offices, and library training programs for new librarians. The article also provides practical advise by recent graduates and their collection development experiences. Topics of discussion include acclimation to a new environment, collection development policies and procedures, liaison work, resource selection, and time management.     

Issues in Collecting Post‐Soviet Crime Fiction in Academic Libraries

This article draws attention to a segment of the Russian literary market that is underrepresented in American research library collections, namely light popular fiction and particularly the titles that belong to the detektiv genre. The results of an informal survey of scholars and bibliographers are presented and collection patterns are briefly discussed. Following an exposition of the available collection development tools for Russian light fiction, the article concludes with a call for greater emphasis on collecting these materials in North American research libraries.     

Book selection responsibilities for the reference librarian: professional benefit or burden?☆

Full-time bibliographers are not common in smaller and medium sized academic libraries. In this setting, reference librarians typically serve as selectors of books and other library material. However, reference librarians for the most part are hired to perform public service duties revolving around a busy reference desk. In the past few years, additional responsibilities have been added to the reference librarians’ workload, making it difficult to perform collection development duties. Acquisitions and collection development librarians are frequently frustrated at how reference librarians seemingly put off or defer their collection development responsibilities. However, there are ways to utilize reference librarians in a collection development team and help them become effective part-time bibliographers.     

Let's Get Rid of It:

A recent survey revealed that very few libraries were doing any significant weeding in their reference collections. Yet weeding the reference collection may have as great an impact on the library as a whole as weeding the general collection. This article discusses some of the author's experiences weeding the reference collection at Georgia State University and the ways in which general weeding concerns, such as planning for staffing, establishing criteria, and formulating selection policies, may be applied to the reference collection. Reference materials differ in nature and use from materials in the general collection, and this article analyses the impact these differences have on the weeding effort.     

Organizing Effective Faculty Participation in Collection Development

This paper presents two basic arguments: 1) the political realities of academia suggest that faculty must be an integral part of the library collection development; and 2) for this participation to be effective, it should be organized and controlled by library staff. The latter should develop a stepwise plan that calls for faculty participation in collection evaluation, standardization of departmental request procedures, and the training of faculty representatives in the selection of current and retrospective materials.     

Collection Development Assessment for New Collection Development Librarians

A number of articles have been written in the past several years that provide practical advice for librarians new to collection development, particularly in terms of understanding terminology, learning collection development processes, and gaining familiarity with one's library and institution. This article furthers this discussion, but with attention to working in collection development within the OhioLINK consortial environment. In order to thrive in this environment, new bibliographers are benefited by becoming familiar with and using data such as usage statistics, consortium reports, and peer institution statistics to develop and expand collections in one's assigned disciplines. Attention is also given to creating subject collection statements, faculty networking, and colleague assistance. The writer, himself relatively new to collection development, provides insights and perspectives on these matters, chiefly applicable to others new to collection development.     

台湾地区公共图书馆馆藏发展政策研究

台湾地区的国立中央图书馆台湾分馆、台北市立图书馆、台北县立图书馆、林口乡立图书馆均制定了馆藏发展政策。这些馆藏发展政策的内容包括政策说明、本馆简介、馆藏概述、馆藏资料选择、馆藏资料采访、馆藏维护、对外活动7个方面。我国大陆地区公共图书馆在制定馆藏发展政策时,应借鉴台湾地区的实践经验,研究并拟定政策编制指南,并在具体政策文件中突出电子资源建设和馆际合作等问题。     

Collection development and acquisitions for service to off-campus students

The factors that contribute to effective collection development and acquisitions for library service to off-campus students are discussed. These factors are staffing, adequate funds to purchase materials, good communications among library staff and between the library and the faculty and students who use it, and the need to modify traditional academic library collection development and acquisition policies and procedures. In the course of the discussion the Correspondence/Off-Campus Library Service provided by the University of Manitoba Libraries in support of the university's distance education program is described.

Out of the Fire and into the Frying Pan - Hope for Patent Reference Service in a Non-Patent Depository Library

The Patent Depository Library (PDL) system is a valuable program which provides important patent collections and services at many locations across the country. Not all of those interested in patent information can travel to a PDL, and reference staff at other libraries often feel uneasy in dispensing patent information. The article suggests that many types of patent inquiries can be addressed with a small investment in time, materials, and training. Delineates four different levels of service, and discusses the means for deciding which is appropriate to a given library. Describes materials and staff training for each of the levels. Introduces advanced service options and discusses several patron types and their possible needs. Integrating a patent reference service component into an existing reference service provides a number of benefits: information to the community, better public relations for the library, and an opportunity for staff development.     

Why Did We Buy That? New Customers and Changing Directions in Collection Development

This article describes the new role of academic libraries in higher education and shows how it has changed collection development objectives to serve a nontraditional constituency not served in the past. This is illustrated, in part, by Kent State University Library's review and selection of language-learning software, motivated by the university's strategic initiatives for globalization. It demonstrates a new trend to purchase resources that support administrative agendas and non-teaching programs, and the impact this has on how libraries frame collection development policies and allocate dollars for library content. As collection managers are redirecting support to revenue-building objectives, are they compromising support of educational objectives?     

Faculty Participation in Book Selection in a Large Academic Library

Faculty participation in book selection in academic libraries is considered a desirable goal, but one which can have pitfalls, even in a setting where acquisition funds are entirely controlled by the library. This article describes a successful cooperative book selection arrangement which makes use of a faculty library committee and subject bibliographers for book selection in both a traditional, closely-defined field (German literature and philology) and an interdisciplinary area (German studies).

Impact of the Internet on collection development: where are we now? Where are we headed? An informal study

Forty-one bibliographers described how the Internet has changed their work, and six library directors speculated about future change. Findings confirm that responding bibliographers collect Internet resources and make broad use of the Internet as a collection tool, while the directors see their libraries as well-positioned for an uncertain future.     

Keeping Up: Building Your Indigenous Collection

This article provides practical tips on how to build your personal collection of materials on Indigenous topics. Before taking steps in acquiring content, consider the place of print and electronic material in your life as a librarian and Indigenous person. Rephrase foundational documents such as collection development policies, Ranganathan's laws of library science, and Saricks' appeal factors in ways that reflect your Indigenous worldview. Review the steps you take and might take to build this collection, starting with assessing what resources you already have access to, and develop your list of ten authors to watch.

[目的/意义]通过对国外部分财经院校图书馆的馆藏发展政策制定现状进行分析,为我国同类型图书馆提供借鉴。[方法/过程]依据QS（Quacquarelli Symonds）世界大学排名选取样本对象,通过访问其图书馆网站的方式获取其馆藏发展政策并对其内容进行分析。[结果/结论]总结国外财经院校图书馆馆藏发展政策制定的共性、财经特色以及不足,对我国同类型图书馆在资源建设方面和馆藏发展政策制定方面提出建议。     

Writing the Collection Assessment Manual

A regular, systematic collection assessment program is essential to a well-managed collection development operation. But too often librarians lack the knowledge and skills to plan and conduct such assessments. To help librarians develop their professional competence in collection evaluation, this article rccommends a collection assessment training manual. Such a manual should provide not only the practical techniques and procedures necessary to conduct, analyze, and report the assessment activities and results, but also the broader rationale needed to develop tailor-made evaluation programs to meet a variety of assessment objectives. The article also recommends and discusses a number of collection-centered and client- centered measurement techniques that should be included in the manual as well as planning and reporting considerations and suggestions for format, etc. Developing an assessment manual requires considerable effort, but the effort is well invested when the results are better collection development decisions.     

Recommended core collection of Web sites for hospital libraries

Core lists of recommended resources have long been used as selection tools for collection development in hospital libraries. However, hospital librarians now rely on the Internet for access to up-to-date information to supplement materials available within their libraries. Many libraries now either maintain a library Web page or provide input for their institution's Web page. The difficulty is determining what sites to include on their page. This article is a basic guide to recommended links for hospital libraries. It is intended as a starting place for hospital librarians who wish to create (or add to) a Web page of good links to be used for answering reference questions, or as a list for library users. The list is available as a link from the Sharp Health Science Library Web page where it will be updated at least annually. Links will be checked on a regular basis.
