融合学习情境下的信息检索课实训教学设计与实践

信息检索课实训教学是培养和提高学生信息素养、学习能力及解决实际问题能力的关键因素。文章提出改变当前较为传统的教学方式,运用情境学习理论和学习迁移理论,融合多任务情境学习的需求,创新实训教学方法,实行"课内实训+小组讨论汇报+汇报总结点评"三位一体的教学方式。实践证明,该教学方式更加符合学生学习认知规律,可以拓宽信息检索课程的应用环境,塑造灵动有趣有用的课程新形象,开启高效的集体协作学习模式,训练学生科学研究问题的思路和方法,丰富学生的学习体验。     

The Embedded Science Librarian: Partner in Curriculum Design and Delivery

ABSTRACT

Information literacy is essential for success in undergraduate science programs, but teaching faculty are generally ill-prepared or unwilling to provide intentional support in their courses. Librarians are uniquely qualified to help. In this article, the author presents one example of a faculty–librarian collaboration in which the science librarian is embedded in a first-year, undergraduate course in nanoscience, both as a codesigner of the curriculum and a member of the teaching team. She traces her progress from new appointee to faculty partner, and describes the unique, electronic-journal project they designed to promote the development of information and academic literacies.     

How Librarians Shape Online Courses

Abstract

Online course delivery can be a dynamic learning experience where information is used to shape and extend thinking. The challenge is creating a virtual classroom that combines evocative resources with tasks that enhance and stimulate student learning. New models are needed to reflect the changing learning environment that began with the advent of the Web. Librarians are experts in locating learning materials across the electronic landscape. They construct resource-based assignments that promote understanding of content and develop independent thinking skills. They bring a context for resource-rich learning environments and the necessary support mechanisms to ensure learners gain information literacy skills. This paper outlines how librarians can contribute to new course design models that maximize the effective use of online resources in support of student learning.

从教育学和心理学的视角出发,基于活动理论的分析框架,围绕主体的学习活动、学习对象、学习工具、学习共同体等核心要素,对合作式信息素质教育活动系统进行理论分析和系统框架构建,在此基础上开展相关的教学活动设计研究,以期丰富信息素质教育的理论体系,创新教学模式,提升教学效果,更有效地培养学生的自主学习、独立思考、批判性思维和创新能力。     

The application of the Bliss Bibliographic Classification in Cambridge College libraries

With publication of the classification schedules having begun in 1977 and not yet complete, the revised edition of the Bliss Bibliographic Classification (BC2) is still new. The scheme has been widely praised for its theory, but has hitherto been applied chiefly in specialist libraries. A major opportunity to see how it works in general, if small, academic libraries is provided by the libraries of Fitzwilliam, Jesus, King's, Queens' and Sidney Sussex Colleges in Cambridge. This article shows how these libraries differ from each other in their application of BC2 in the location of major subjects, in minor choices of classmark, in the length and presentation of classmarks and through the problem of early converts to BC2 being locked into draft schedules. The divergences demonstrate clearly the flexibility of BC2, and in all cases the faceted structure aids understanding. User reaction or lack of it suggests that BC2 functions well in general academic libraries.

The Future is Flexible,Extensible, and Community-Based: Stories of Successful Electronic Resources Management

Centralized Online Resources Acquisitions and Licensing (CORAL) is an open source electronic resources management system originally developed by the University of Notre Dame Hesburgh Libraries. The CORAL system consists of five modules designed to manage the library electronic resources life-cycle, including licensing and contact information, procurement and activation workflow, usage statistics, and the storage of documentation. CORAL was designed as a flexible and customizable management system, with the ability to utilize each module independently or as a suite to maintain the electronic resources management needs of individual institutions. Scott Vieira of Rice University, Steve Oberg of Wheaton College, and Andrea Imre of Southern Illinois University Carbondale present on the functionality of CORAL and demonstrate the system’s flexibility and extensibility in managing library electronic resources.     

The Impact of the Internet

Summary

The Internet has brought great changes to reference services in academic libraries. One significant impact has been the growth and evolution of the reference librarian's role as teacher. This article reviews the literature on the librarian's increased teaching role with the emergence of the Internet, discusses the changing student populations who require a librarian's instruction and the skills that students need to achieve information literacy, and reviews how the Internet has affected current teaching strategies including classroom instruction, Web-based instruction, and efforts to integrate information literacy instruction into the curriculum. In addition, it also introduces emerging Internet technologies with their potential impact on teaching and instruction. The authors conclude that the reference librarian's teaching role will further increase with the development of information technologies.     

The ICPSR and Social Science Research

ABSTRACT

The Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR), a unit within the Institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan, is the world's largest social science data archive. The data sets in the ICPRS database give the social sciences librarian/subject specialist an opportunity of providing value-added bibliographic information. Access to the data sets is by membership in the consortium. This article gives an overview of the ICPSR database and of other services provided by the ICPSR, including sample usage statistics and reports. Research has shown that use of electronic resources, such as that provided by the data sets of the ICPSR, leads to an increase in publications by scholars. Librarians from a variety of disciplines—economics, political science, education, sociology, criminal justice, and social work—can help their researchers use the ICPSR's data sets to help further the goals of social science.     

The Professor-Librarian: Academic Librarians Teaching Credit-Bearing Courses

Many academic librarians have ideas or opportunities for teaching information literacy courses for the library, outside the scope of their regular positions. Some additional librarians are asked to consider teaching credit-bearing courses for other departments at their institutions, based on graduate degrees they hold in fields besides library science. Academic librarians who face either option are often asked to provide detailed information on how colleagues at other institutions handle arrangements: payment, coverage of library services while they are teaching, and proving their suitability for teaching in a given subject area. Unfortunately, the data available on their work is both scant and scattered. The authors surveyed librarians at 350 academic libraries across the United States to gather and analyze data on these and numerous related aspects of librarians’ teaching for departments outside the library. They also collected and analyzed comprehensive background information on these “professor-librarians.”     

A Library and a Radio Show: The Story of a Successful Partnership at 10 Years and Counting

Your Health® Radio is a weekly one-hour radio show about consumer health produced by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Department of Family Medicine. It provides practical, health-related news and information to listeners in an easy to understand style. Hosted by a family medicine physician faculty member and co-hosted by other health professionals, it airs on a local radio station. Since 2009, Health Sciences librarians have collaborated on the show, bringing their expertise in information discovery and organization, consumer health, and health literacy to this consumer health endeavor. In the process, the librarians and libraries have also benefitted.
