Serials Control in an Online Integrated System

An experiment in latest entry cataloging of selected serial title changes is currently being conducted at Northwestern University Library. The integrated structure of Northwestern's automated system NOTIS and its applications to serials processing were primary factors leading to the investigation of latest entry cataloging as an alternative to the current standard of successive entry cataloging for serial title changes. A systematic investigation was conducted through most of 1985 and allowed project staff to identify and evaluate a number of concerns and problems. The study team is encouraged with the results, but will continue gathering cataloging statistics and will conduct user studies before adopting latest entry cataloging as a permanent option.     

CALIS与国家图书馆丛编项著录的差异分析

在编目规则国际化的趋势下,统一编目著录规则已经成为国内编目界的当务之急。目前,CALIS和中国国家图书馆两家中心馆的编目著录规则存在一些不同,一些有识之士已经对此提出己见,但却遗漏了丛编项著录的差异。尤其是当丛编项作为重要的著录项时,它选取、使用的字段及著录的信息等方面的差异更为严重,给书目数据检索、共建共享带来了不便。因此,CALIS和国家图书馆应该统一思想,争取早日制订出统一的编目规则。     

“Insourcing” of Cataloging in a Consortial Environment: The UC Santa Barbara–UC San Diego Music Copy Cataloging Project

A collaborative cataloging project for music sound recordings between two University of California campuses matches available staffing at UC San Diego with the need for better access to a high-priority collection of audio CDs at UC Santa Barbara, with promising results. This article discusses the decision to collaborate, the project planning process, cataloging standards and workflow issues, network level cataloging within an international database (OCLC), communication between personnel on the two campuses, managing cataloging review, an assessment of the project's achievements to date, and implications and future directions for similar cooperative projects.     

A Research Agenda for Cataloging: The CCQ Editorial Board Responds to the Year of Cataloging Research

The cataloging and classification community was called to highlight 2010 as “The Year of Cataloging Research,” and specifically was challenged to generate research ideas, conduct research, and generally promote the development of new research in cataloging. Cataloging & Classification Quarterly has become the most influential journal of research in cataloging and classification since its inception in 1981. The idea behind the research reported here was to give the CCQ editorial board an opportunity to present its point of view about research for cataloging. A Delphi study was conducted in three stages during the 2009–2010 academic year. Members were asked to define the key terms “cataloging,” “evidence,” and “research,” and to develop a research agenda in cataloging. The results reveal a basic core definition of cataloging perceived as a dynamic, active process at the core of information retrieval. An eight point research agenda emerges that is forward-looking and embraces change, along with top-ranked calls for new empirical evidence about catalogs, cataloging, and catalog users.

Historically, acquisitions and cataloging functions were managed separately, although initial pre-order cataloging procedures were in place since late 1993. Prior to the merger in 2001, cataloging staff selected and exported MARC records in advance of the ordering functions performed exclusively by acquisitions staff. Library administrative personnel, concerned with the persistent lag time from receipt of the order card to actual receipt of the item, mandated change. After implementing new procedures and streamlining workflow, a sample analysis of productivity and fill rates for two fiscal years, before change and after, demonstrated significantly that cataloging at point of order is desirable in providing faster delivery of new materials.

跨行业编目共享是图书编目发展的必然趋势。目前,出版社、书商、图书馆对图书的分别编目导致了编目工作重复,造成了经济成本与人力成本的浪费。因此,出版社、书商、图书馆及用户应协力共建全国性跨行业书目数据网,各司其职,按统一的编目标准或数据兼容格式逐步完善、补充书目数据。     

印前编目与在版编目、联合编目的区别与联系

印前编目与在版编目（CIP）和联合编目既有区别又有联系。通过对三者的比较分析发现,印前编目、在版编目和联合编目在编目机构、编目主体、编目对象、编目时间、编目目的、编目用途方面存在区别;而印前编目与CIP和联合编目之间的联系则更多地表现在印前编目对CIP时效性的继承、对联合编目联合性的发展及在前两者的基础上引入专业分工理念的创新。     

Purpose-driven Assessment of Cataloging and Metadata Services: Transforming Broken Links into Linked Data

Abstract

In response to the impact of emerging technologies, this article examines the relationship between strategic planning and the assessment methodologies of cataloging and metadata services and explores (or “suggests” if appropriate) how to assess cataloging and metadata activities more effectively and relevantly. Besides literature review, the author conducted surveys for more than seventy librarians and follow-up interviews with three library administrators. The results indicate the gap between strategic planning and assessment for cataloging and metadata services, and identify the significance of impact and users’ needs in strategic planning for the assessment of cataloging and metadata services. These elements are critical in transforming the broken links in the current cataloging assessment into a purpose-driven assessment corresponding to users’ needs and evolving technologies.     

Off-Site Storage from a Cataloging Point of View

This article focuses on the challenges faced by the serials cataloging staff at Texas A&M University Libraries following a decision to move materials to an off-site storage facility. The process of cataloging review developed by serials cataloging staff to address these challenges is described in detail. More specifically, the process that deals with the preparation of the collections for off-site storage, with emphasis on the unique problems created by serials that have been cataloged under pre–Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules, Second Edition (AACR2) rules is described.     

The Changing Cataloging Culture: What Do We Mean When We Talk About Cataloger Values?

ABSTRACT

The Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC) Standing Committee on Training was charged with the development of a training model to support the Program, promote the values of timely access and cost-effectiveness in cataloging, and to expand the pool of catalogers who cataloged to mutually accepted standards. This article describes the training philosophy developed by the Standing Committee on Training and adopted by the Program. The training model assumes that it is important to maintain an adequate supply of original cataloging; to accept the concept of a national cataloging standard; to increase acceptance of cataloging copy; to avoid duplicative cataloging; and to increase the timeliness of contribution to national cataloging databases.     

用CNMARC代替KORMARC进行韩文文献编目的可行性分析

通过分析目前国内韩文文献编目的现状及问题,结合我校图书馆韩文编目的实践,基于ISBD(M)对CNMARC与KORMARC的著录项进行了比较,表明套用CNMARC进行韩文文献编目是完全可行的,以期为各图书馆在进行韩文编目时提供参考.     

One for Nine Ten: Cataloging for Consortia Collections,a UC model

ABSTRACT

In January 2000, the University of California created the Shared Cataloging Program (SCP). Based at the University of California, San Diego, the SCP is a “centralized cataloging model” for the California Digital Library consortium collections. This article will take an evolutionary look at the perpetual challenges of sustaining a consortial cataloging model and highlight the efforts of the SCP in the ongoing quest to eliminate the redundancy of efforts by centralizing the optimization of cataloging efficiency.     

A Review of “RDA Vocabularies for a Twenty-First-Century Data Environment”

Automation and economic cutbacks are forcing many large libraries to alter traditional organizational structures. This paper describes the reorganization of technical and public service activities in the University of Illinois Library at Urbana-Champaign. The decentralization of original cataloging functions is examined, particularly as implemented in the Education and Social Science Library (ESSL), and the effect on management of original cataloging activities and cataloging norms is discussed.     

音像资料联合编目规则探讨

通过比较研究地方版文献联合采编协作网(CRLNet)几个有代表性成员馆的音像资料编目数据发现,目前国内图书馆的音像资料编目存在各自为政、编目数据大相径庭的现象,其主要原因是没有统一的编目规则。为统一CRLNet音像资料的著录规则,深圳图书馆征求各成员馆的意见并结合音像资料工作实践提出,音像资料的著录可以参见著录电子资源的某些字段,但是主体仍应该遵循录音、录像资料的编目规则。     

When Good Enough Is Not Good Enough: Resolving Cataloging Issues for High Density Storage

This article identifies issues with cataloging backlogs and quality control, particularly relating to the subsequent ingest of content into library high density storage. Results of a pilot project at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign are used to demonstrate the high cost of retroactively addressing cataloging concerns, and how not addressing them contributes to issues in discovery and access. Changes in local cataloging standards, and criteria for how to assess a cost/benefit ratio for quality cataloging are also discussed.     

中国国家书目的FRBR化实践与思考

概述国内外书目的FRBR化实践,从国外国家书目的FRBR化成果中吸取经验,探索中国国家书目的FRBR化,展示基于Primo资源发现系统的FRBR化试验结果,发现2011年中国国家书目中约有30%参与了FRBR化聚合。在此基础上,分析中国国家书目FRBR化存在的问题及原因,提出适应数字时代资源编目的几点建议:启动中国文献编目规则修订;推进书目规范建设和全球共享;实现编目一体化;开发新型编目体系。     

A Survey of Cataloging Education: Are Library Schools Listening?

ABSTRACT

In recent years a number of surveys of cataloging education have been conducted, and each of those surveys has suggested changes in library education. This survey reviews the current state of cataloging education by evaluating courses taught by 47 ALA accredited programs and compares the results to previous studies. This study examined the types of cataloging courses offered in LIS programs to determine if the type of course taught has changed over time. Additionally, this study examined course offering frequencies to determine if LIS programs are making the kind of courses needed to train cataloging librarians available to their students. It is concluded that although LIS programs are continuing to offer and require introductory courses in cataloging and bibliographic control, they are relying more heavily on these introductory courses to provide the bulk of cataloging education.     

Cataloging E-Books: Dealing with Vendors and Various Other Problems

E-books are an important part of library collections. Allowing patrons to easily find e-books in a library’s online catalog requires properly cataloging these materials. Miao Jin, Catalog Librarian at Hinds Community College, gave a presentation titled “Cataloging e-Books: Dealing with Vendors and Various Other Problems” at the Mississippi State University Libraries’ eResource & Emerging Technologies Summit held in the Mitchell Memorial Library on August 2, 2013. Jin provided information on cataloging her library’s e-books and adding them to the library’s online catalog. She presented strategies for loading e-book machine-readable cataloging (MARC) records, and shared her experience working with vendors.
