数字图书馆与压缩技术

压缩就是对数据重新编码排列后，使其占据更少的存储空间，提高传输速率。针对压缩技术在数字图书馆建设过程中遇到的问题，提出相应的解决方案，并阐述压缩工具的特点及在压缩过程中的注意事项。     

High-Density Off-Site Storage: Document Delivery and Academic Library Research Collections

ABSTRACT

This article describes a high-density off-site book storage facility operated by a consortium of the University of Colorado and the University of Denver. Opened in 2001, it has capacity to house nearly 1.5 million items in only 9,500 square feet by shelving books by size on thirty-foot tall shelving. Materials are retrieved upon patrons' electronic request and delivered to the library daily. By removing seldom-used material to off-site storage, valuable library space is made available for patron-service activities. As millions of volumes are moved off-site in favor of on-demand delivery, the nature of the research library will change. This article describes the high-density off-site storage facility at the University of Colorado, the reason for its existence, the retrieval and delivery system. This paper also explores some implications of high-density off-site storage for library materials.     

浅析数据分级存储在数字图书馆建设中的运用

基于存储系统技术的发展,运用数据信息生命周期管理理论,讨论分析分级存储技术在数字图书馆建设中的应用与管理,试图解决高校数字图书馆目前面临数据量猛增而存储系统资金投入严重不足的矛盾,同时提出适合于数字图书馆存储系统建设发展的分级存储体系构建策略.     

Little-Used Duplicates,Cooperative Collection Development,and Storage

Libraries are ordinarily short of space for collections, staff, and readers. Construction is expensive. Growing populations of little-used duplicates constitute prime candidates wherever storage economies are considered, e.g., in weeding and/or relegation to secondary storage. The problem of litle-used duplicates arises whenever any cognizance is taken of the holdings of other collections or of other libraries. A series of issues involving collection development, library cooperation, storage, and quality of service are reviewed, with special reference to cooperative storage programs.

Small Scale: Using a Regional Pilot Project to Explore the Potential of Shared Print

The long-standing cooperative culture within the research library community should serve as a useful foundation for building regional cooperative agreements to support repositories of print journal backfiles. Serious storage constraints facing Iowa State University, the University of Iowa, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison mandated an effort to tackle this problem in a deliberative and coordinated way. An inter-institutional Task Force was formed to design and implement a process with a selected group of titles as a pilot project. The immediate goal was to liberate shelf space with an eye toward the future development of a consortial collection management plan for the storage of print journals among the three institutions.

Renovating Special Collections Facilities

ABSTRACT

Special collections play an increasingly important role in university libraries. As library collections move to digital formats and collections are similar from one library to another, special collections are one of the ways in which libraries can build a distinct identity. Because of their unique nature, special collections must be permanently retained because of their artifact value and need specialized storage conditions with appropriate levels of security. Library administrators will increasingly face the need to provide expanded space for special collections as well as improving storage conditions to ensure that unique and valuable materials are preserved for research in the future.     

近20年来图书馆馆库空间变化研究

文章通过分析近20年来全国公共图书馆馆库空间密度统计数据,并剖析中山大学和俄亥俄大学两个图书馆布局设计典型案例,探讨了图书馆空间布局的变化,阐述了现代图书馆已经从单纯的贮藏空间向公共空间及学习空间发生变化的观点,建议图书馆结合各地"十二五"规划,加强与所在城市区域的合作,以多种方式拓展图书馆可利用空间,提高图书馆的生存竞争力。     

低利用率文献的区域性合作储存探索

文献储存空间不足与长期以来积聚的大量低利用率文献占据大量馆藏空间的矛盾成为图书馆迫切需要解决的问题。目前我国处理低利用率文献的方式并不能从根本上解决问题。实践证明,合作储存低利用率文献已经成为图书馆解决空间问题的主流。合作储存不仅可以节省储存费用,而且可通过进一步揭示文献资源、聚合文献供应提升文献的利用率,同时也可为人类长久地获得这些文献资源提供可靠的保证。因此,我国图书馆应该根据现实情况构建两种区域性合作储存的模型。

[目的/意义]现阶段很多图书馆都出现了空间不足、环境老化的现象,空间再造成为图书馆的一个迫在眉睫、亟待解决的重大课题。[方法/过程]根据图书馆空间五要素要求原则,从读者属性角度分析图书馆空间短缺的原因是来自读者对图书馆空间的需求差异,把握读者属性的特点才能更好的进行空间再造。[结果/结论]针对不同类型的图书馆给出有效改善图书馆空间紧缩或阅读空间空置率高等现状的相应思路。

数字时代,以用户为中心的图书馆面临着人的空间与书的空间的平衡问题。图书馆是否将重新考虑自身空间设计,是否应从传统的藏借阅合一模式中脱离出来,这些都值得图书馆人深思。从这个角度出发,论文讨论了图书馆空间模式的发展趋势,在图书馆三大空间的基础上提出了新型“藏借阅分离”这种复合式空间模式,并给出了实现这种空间模式的建议和意见。

虚拟空间在拓展和提升图书馆服务的同时,也受到了资源共享和信息安全难以平衡的困扰。基于虚拟空间关键要素平衡的视角,运用区块链技术能够较好地解决这一问题,从而实现对图书馆虚拟空间的有效治理。文章通过分析区块链技术治理图书馆虚拟空间的途径和价值,构建基于区块链技术的图书馆虚拟空间治理模式。图书馆虚拟空间应用区块链技术,需要解决资源共享和高效利用、资源开放与信息安全、功能扩展与运行效率等相互冲突的问题。构建基于区块链辩证思维、系统性方法、综合治理三者结合的图书馆虚拟空间治理模式,可以有效满足虚拟空间治理和发展的功能需求。     

Moving the New York University Abu Dhabi Library

Using Steven Carl Fortriede's method in Moving Your Library: Getting the Collection From Here to There as a framework, we successfully moved the New York University Abu Dhabi Library from a library and off-site storage facility to one new library. While we generally followed Fortriede's advice, we deviated from his plan in three important ways: We created a color-coding system for the boxes, which eliminated the need to keep the boxes in strict order; we integrated two collections during the move (rather than before); and we created phantom books to create space for lengthy multivolume sets in the smaller collection.
