Using EPIC to search the OCLC Online Union Catalog in a health sciences library

EPIC is a service that provides keyword or subject access to the OCLC Online Union Catalog (OLUC). This capability increases the success rate for title location as well as the potential uses of the OLUC. The features of the EPIC system, application of these features to the OLUC, and specific uses in health sciences libraries are described in this article.     

Single-Record versus Separate-Record Approaches for Cataloging E-Serials in the OCLC WorldCat Local Environment

Libraries have been making decisions on whether to use a single- or separate-record approach for cataloging e-serials based on what works best in their local library integrated systems and which approach is likely to save cataloging time. However, in the new network-level cataloging and OCLC WorldCat Local environment, we need to make cataloging decisions based on what works best in a network-level platform. This article discusses the OCLC WorldCat Local environment, the concept of network-level cataloging, and why Washington State University has responded by migrating from a single-record to separate-record cataloging policy for e-serials.

Creating a Local Print Repository for State Consortium Online Purchases

A group of eleven public university libraries, comprising the Council of State University Libraries consortium, created an experimental archive to retain one print copy of online journals for use of consortium members. The article addresses the initial concerns, development of the project, methods used, and concerns for the future. The article raises the question of whether libraries need to archive print backups for online materials as well as who should do the archiving and to what extent.     

The role of the Cataloging Department in the implementation of OCLC WorldCat Local

OCLC WorldCat Local (WCL) is a unique service that connects library users to local, regional, and OCLC WorldCat results in a single discovery-and-delivery interface. In spring 2009, Washington State University (WSU) Libraries decided to implement WCL. All WSU Libraries' departments played important roles in the implementation process. It is the focus of this paper to discuss the role of WSU Cataloging Department during the implementation process in terms of training staff to catalog at the network level, changing cataloging policies and procedures, preparing old catalog for WCL, and collaborating with other WSU Libraries' departments.     

综合档案馆纸质档案酸化问题研究——以某综合档案馆为例

文章以某综合档案馆为例,对其馆藏纸质档案pH值进行了抽样测试,再从纸张种类、保存环境等方面分析了影响纸质档案酸化的主要因素,提出综合档案馆应宣传使用无酸纸、改善纸质档案保存条件、降低酸化档案使用率、建立档案分级保护体系等纸质档案酸化治理与预防建议,为综合档案馆缓解或解决纸质档案酸化问题提供参考.     

A pilot study of OCLC CJK plus as OPAC

This article reports the responses of 32 Chinese, Taiwanese, Japanese, and Korean participants to the possible extension to an OPAC of OCLC CJK Plus. Korean and Taiwanese participants are less satisfied with the system than are Japanese and Chinese. Unfamiliarity with the CJK word division, diacritics, romanization, and lack of local standard keyboard support were the major reasons for this dissatisfaction. More comprehensive studies of each CJK language, and more user interface studies, are needed if a better system is to emerge.     

A comparison of OCLC and ILLINET online as tools for pre-order citation verification

ILLINET Online, Illinois's powerful online catalog and resource sharing network, is extensive enough to be considered a rival to OCLC as a source for preorder citation verification. This study was undertaken to determine if a sizeable percentage of the titles that are presently being verified on OCLC prior to ordering at Western Illinois University Library could be verified at the time of order on the ILLINET Online database instead.A sample issue of the Processing Information List, a biweekly listing of titles on order or in process at WIU, was selected to provide the study sample. From this list of OCLC verified titles, approximately 10 percent were checked on ILLINET Online to see if they were included in the statewide database at the time of order. The study revealed that 80.2% of the titles could have been verified without cost on the ILLINET Online system. Problem areas were predictable: foreign language titles, foreign imprint titles, nonbook materials, dissertations, and very recent publications. However, time and money could be saved if the ILLINET database substituted for OCLC in pre-order verification.

FirstSearch 联机检索系统, 通过Internet 的WWW 方式面向最终用户开展从文摘索引到全文文献的网上一体化服务。其按次计费、检索结果免费的低价位收费体系等诸多特点, 构成了联机检索服务的一种新模式。这种模式比DIALOG 等传统的联机系统通过情报检索人员为最终用户服务的模式具有更多的优越性, 并代表了当今电子信息时代联机检索服务的发展方向。但是在数据库数量及数据库覆盖的专业面与文献类型以及检索软件的功能等方面, FirstSearch 还远不及DIALOG, 因此要将二者互相取长补短结合使用。

针对在线商品评论总体质量不高、缺乏有效评论引导机制的问题,以亚马逊商品在线评论为研究对象,结合文本挖掘技术和实证研究,探究基于文本内容评论有用性的影响因素。通过以手机这一典型商品为例,发现消费者关注手机系统反应、音质、导航、打字体验,希望了解电池、充电器等配件细节,重视商家的配送、退换货、保修、发票等服务,评论文本包含这些信息会提高其有用性。     

中美英档案网站在线服务功能比较研究

互联网环境下,档案在线服务已成为档案利用服务发展的必然趋势.文章通过调研中美英三国具有代表性的五个档案网站,对比我国和欧美发达国家档案网站的在线服务功能,并对我国档案网站在线服务功能的提升提出对策和建议.     

Using the OCLC union listing component for a statewide health sciences union list of serials

Union lists of serials are critical to the effective operation of interlibrary loan networks. The Michigan Health Sciences Libraries Association used the OCLC union list component to produce the Michigan Statewide Health Sciences Union List of Serials (MISHULS). MISHULS, which includes the serials holdings of ninety-three hospital health sciences libraries, is a subset of a statewide multi-type union list maintained on OCLC. The rationale for a statewide list and the criteria for choosing vendors are discussed. Typical costs are provided. Funding sources are identified and a unique approach to decentralized input is described. The benefits of resource sharing in a larger, multi-type library network are also explored.     

Bibliographic control of audiovisuals: analysis of a cataloging project using OCLC

The staff of the Quillen-Dishner College of Medicine Library cataloged 702 audiovisual titles between July 1, 1982, and June 30, 1983, using the OCLC database. This paper discusses the library's audiovisual collection and describes the method and scope of a study conducted during this project, the cataloging standards and conventions adopted, the assignment and use of NLM classification, the provision of summaries for programs, and the amount of staff time expended in cataloging typical items. An analysis of the use of OCLC for this project resulted in the following findings: the rate of successful searches for audiovisual copy was 82.4%; the error rate for records used was 41.9%; modifications were required in every record used; the Library of Congress and seven member institutions provided 62.8% of the records used. It was concluded that the effort to establish bibliographic control of audiovisuals is not widespread and that expanded and improved audiovisual cataloging by the Library of Congress and the National Library of Medicine would substantially contribute to that goal.
