Monitoring a business approval plan for balance and numbers

This paper describes the steps taken to adjust the profile for business and economics for an approval plan at Bowling Green State University. It posits that characteristics of business publishing—the role of academic writing in a subject field heavily weighted toward selling books to professionals, the tendency toward buzzwords and managerial panaceas, and the rate and number of titles published—complicate writing an effective approval profile for business. The paper enumerates situational factors and steps taken, including the importance of vendor-library cooperation, in developing a profile that better matched the university user communities.     

Catalogers Unite! Creating Documentation through Collaboration

Recent changes have forced Bowling Green State University (BGSU) to reevaluate our documentation, workflows, and communication. There have been staff retirements, changes in staff responsibilities, and a new faculty cataloger. Additionally, BGSU is implementing a discovery layer, purchasing shelf-ready books, and adding more electronic resources. It has become apparent that documentation needs to be updated and, in many cases, created from scratch. Collaboration is critical as catalogers are currently few in number and are seeing the need to work with other departments in ways unheard of previously. The creation of a new cataloging manual is vital to the success of cataloging at BGSU.     

High-Density Remote Storage

Abstract

This article describes a high-density off-site book storage facility operated by the Ohio State University Libraries. Opened in 1995, it has the capacity to house nearly 1.5 million items in only 9,000 square feet by shelving books by size on 30-foot tall shelving. A sophisticated climate control system extends the life of stored materials up to 12 times. Materials are retrieved upon request of patrons and delivered to the Main Library three times daily.

Mass media and the older voter: 1972

All of the media were significant contributors to the information of older voters in the 1972 campaign. There was a strong relationship between media usage, political interest level, and when a person decided on a candidate. Usage and User Analysis of a Real-Time Digital Reference Service

Summary

This paper presents the results of a use analysis and the results of a user survey of Bowling Green State University Libraries' “Chat with a Librarian” service for the academic year 2001-2002. When appropriate, the results are compared with the results of other libraries' services. Information examined includes when and from where users ask questions via the services, how users find out about the service, and what types of questions the users ask, the status and affiliation of the users, and user satisfaction with the service. Most of this information can be compared to findings from at least one other academic library's study of a somewhat similar service. With a few exceptions, the findings are similar from service to service.     

Usability Testing for e-Resource Discovery: How Students Find and Choose e-Resources Using Library Web Sites

In early 2010, library staff at Bowling Green State University (BGSU) in Ohio designed and conducted a usability study of key parts of the library web site, focusing on the web pages generated by the library's electronic resources management system (ERM) that list and describe the library's databases. The goal was to discover how users find and choose e-resources and identify ways the library could improve access to e-resources through its web site. This article outlines the usability study conducted at BGSU, presents its conclusions about how students at BGSU find and choose databases, contextualizes these findings with other current research about user behavior, and makes recommendations for increasing student use of library e-resources.     

Meeting students on their own turf

Academic librarians strive to make their expertise and their library's resources available to remote users. At Bowling Green State University, librarians boldly left the library building and offered reference and research assistance to undergraduate students around campus. This column describes an effort to take library instruction to residence hall computer labs and discusses possible reasons why this attempt to extend library instructional services outside the library failed.     

The nature and development of commentary

The caution with which the broadcaster views editorializing is interesting, when considered in light of the broadcaster's willingness to allow “strangers” (people not associated with station or network ownership) to comment on topics of the day. Today, the commentary is undergoing change in form and personnel, but it remains an important program type. Dr. Smith is Instructor in the Department of Speech at Bowling Green (Ohio) State University.     

Reaching Additional Users with Proactive Chat

ABSTRACT

Despite a general decline in recent years in academic libraries’ reference desk statistics, research indicates that library users continue to have complex research questions but are largely unaware that librarians are waiting and ready to assist them. The challenge for librarians is to connect with users at their point of need. At Bowling Green State University, we are making a move in this direction with proactive (pop-up) chat widgets embedded within our library Web pages, catalog, and databases. Since implementation, the number of chat reference questions received has more than doubled, helping us reach additional users from on-and off-campus.

大多高校图书馆按《中国图书馆分类法》进行分类排架。这种排架方法需要读者经过一个较长时间的熟悉过程,了解整个排架体系,才能很好地利用馆藏文献。在流通书库划分出相对独立的区域,将某一主题内容的文献集中在一起,设立"主题借阅区",可以更加方便读者利用图书馆。各馆可根据本馆自身情况设置考试考级、参考教材、经典名著等主题借阅区。     

The Significance of a Minority Reference Internship Program

Minority internship programs are increasingly widespread. Each program is unique because it should be based on the conditions surrounding the institution and the intern. The benefits experienced and assessed by one intern should only be a consideration for other programs. This is a view of a program from the intern's perspective. The Minority Internship Program at Bowling Green State University gave me a unique experience to serve in a worthwhile capacity that resulted in my appointment as Multicultural Services Librarian in September of 1990. This internship reflects the commitment of an academic library and the intern's experiences from a working interest in the field to the successful completion of a two year internship program. Three years later this reflection gives a more comprehensive view of the efforts made to have a successful program and meet diversity goals in the library.     

High-Density Off-Site Storage: Document Delivery and Academic Library Research Collections

ABSTRACT

This article describes a high-density off-site book storage facility operated by a consortium of the University of Colorado and the University of Denver. Opened in 2001, it has capacity to house nearly 1.5 million items in only 9,500 square feet by shelving books by size on thirty-foot tall shelving. Materials are retrieved upon patrons' electronic request and delivered to the library daily. By removing seldom-used material to off-site storage, valuable library space is made available for patron-service activities. As millions of volumes are moved off-site in favor of on-demand delivery, the nature of the research library will change. This article describes the high-density off-site storage facility at the University of Colorado, the reason for its existence, the retrieval and delivery system. This paper also explores some implications of high-density off-site storage for library materials.

Public Use of Compact Shelving

Compact shelving can be used successfully to store a high-use book or periodical collection in an undergraduate library. A questionnaire was distributed to libraries presently using compact shelving in public areas. Responses indicate satisfaction with patron acceptance and use, ease of operation and maintenance, and safety features. Problems arise with limited access caused by aisle design.
