ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to propose a library networking model for the Caribbean region. In addition, the probability, desirability, and feasibility of developing and implementing the proposed model was assessed.

Three questionnaires were used for collecting the data. One was called the preliminary questionnaire; the second one consisted of the Delphi questionnaire, which was sent in two rounds; and the third, was the cross-impact questionnaire.

The analysis of responses to the three questionnaires were the major sources of input on the design of this prototype model. The major findings were: Almost all libraries were involved in some kind of cooperative activity involving other institutions. Interlibrary loans, exchange of professional information, and reference services were three major activities which are carried out by libraries, both at the local level and based on informal arrangements. Eighteen institutions reported that they were engaged in computer activities with other libraries. Responses indicated that a wide array of materials exist and that a good portion is in English. Other languages represented were French, Spanish, Dutch, Papiamento, and German. There is a variety of materials found in library collections in the Caribbean region.

The classification schemes used are DDC–the most widely used; followed by LC. The AACR II is used by 82.5 percent of the institutions participating in the study.

All respondents, except one, agreed that there is a need for a networking structure in the Caribbean. Inadequate funding of library and information services was the major obstacle to the development and implementation of a library network. Absence of planning and lack of library legislation were two other impediments mentioned. The responses to the two rounds of Delphi questionnaires provided information with regard to the probability, desirability, and feasibility of the occurrence of the events presented to the participants. In general, experts agreed with all the components that were proposed in the questionnaires. The components for the proposed structure include objectives, functions, governance structure, composition of the network structure, types of members, funding and financing sources, type of structure, and operational requirements of the network.  相似文献

Union listing of serials on OCLC can bring about an increase in interlibrary loan and turn-around time when implemented at a university library. Formerly accessible as a subsystem of OCLC, union listing is now available on Connexion Browser as MARC 21 holdings data. Immediately following a batch load of OCLC union listing records at medium-sized Louisiana university library, it was found that lending requests sent to the library were up 10% for all materials and up 13% for serials. An increase in borrower requests from patrons at the library was also observed when interlibrary loan request buttons were inserted into citation entries found on EBSCO host university databases.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Faced with increased demand from student and faculty for a speedier and more user-friendly method of obtaining materials from other institutions, the interlibrary loan (ILL) department sought to implement a management system which would accomplish the task. Students wanted remote interconnectivity to the system and staff wanted increased workflow efficiency, reduced paper work, and better data management. This paper focuses on Washington College's experience in selecting and implementing an interlibrary loan system, which would enhance student satisfaction as well as that of the library staff.  相似文献

Sound recordings are difficult to obtain via PRISM ILL. Very few participating OCLC memebrs lend sound recordings and PRISM ILL is not designed to steer borrowers to the few lenders of this type of material. A worksheet, based on responses from the ILPD, 4th edition, is offered for use at the OCLC workstation. Strategies for best use of this worksheet are also included.  相似文献

Abstract

Globally, there has been an increased demand for Interlibrary Loan and Document Delivery (ILL/DD) services. As the profession has struggled to meet this demand, many new theories, models, procedures, and technologies have been implemented in libraries and reported in library literature. This article surveys the varied and voluminous literature that has appeared from the years 1995 through 2000. Literature is broadly defined to include not just published books and journal articles, but also conference events, Web sites, and electronic publications. Topics addressed include: Reference Sources for ILL/DD; National and International Initiatives; Theory, Management, and Practice of ILL/DD; Document Delivery; Resource Sharing; and Copyright and Licensing.  相似文献

Two macros are presented to track overdue ILL requests. The first tracks items your patrons have that are overdue, printing a report that includes the ILL#, due date, title of item, and patron info for each overdue record. Many interlibrary loan supervisors request additional staff to handle increased demands for interlibrary loan (ILL). To make decisions, library administrators need information about productivity and staffing. This paper outlines a way to find this information. It also includes results from a study of ILL workload and staffing in the Network of Alabama Academic Libraries (NAAL). As libraries come to rely more and more on interlibrary loan to meet the needs of their patrons in a climate of shrinking materials budgets, the accompanying bookkeeping may swamp an already overburdened staff. Complicating the issue is the fact that some institutions require that invoices cite each article and identify the patron for whom it was provided. To address this issue, the Library at the Louisiana State University Medical Center in Shreveport developed a microcomputer-based system to generate the track invoices for journal article photocopies. The system, written in CLIPPER and Qbasic, captures complete citation and patron data from DOCLINE and OCLC without the need for keyboarding by the operator.  相似文献
