Augmented Assistance in Online Catalog Subject Searching

Researchers have just begun to acknowledge the importance of incorporating the component of human-computer interaction in the design of online information systems. With the advent of interactive computer systems designed for direct use by the general public, the need has become apparent to design "friendly" user interfaces. In this regard, online public access calalogs, OPACs, are no exception. Recent research studies of OPAC users have found that (i) subject access in online catalogs is coming to be valued at least as much as known item access, and that (ii) OPAC users have a number of serious difficulties with subject searching. Consequently, we need to understand what characterizes human-computer compatibility and to examine various means of assisting the OPAC user at the heart of online searching tasks.     

Authority Files in Online Catalogs

Authority control is discussed from two viewpoints: The need for bibliographic records relating to a name to be brought together under one form of the name; and the need for cross references to direct a user to a heading from variant forms of the name. Data from two research projects that support the need for choosing one form of name are summarized. The author's study of user requests that resulted in no "hits" in an online catalog is described. Data are given to show that for only 6.4% of these requests would our current methods of cross referencing in authority records have been helpful, and that two system programs would have given much greater assistance.     

Searching of East Slavic Materials in Library Catalogs

This paper describes some major changes which affect searchin of East Slavic names in library catalogs since 1981, when AACR2 was introduced. Three types of names have been selected for illustration: geographical, corporate, and personal names associated with the Russian S.F.S.R., Ukraine and Byelomssian S.S.R. In addition to pointing out new search patterns for East Slavic names thc discussion focuses on how library catalogs have been restructured to accommodate these changes and provides suggestions to Slavic scholars about how they can become familiar with these new searching methods.     

Online Catalogs and the User

Online catalogs are more than an extension of the card catalog. They are something entirely new and under continuous de- velopment. Although users are enthusiastic about online catalogs. their ositive attitude may change unless certain problems are cor- rectef The library profession should develop specifications for on- line catalogs that w~ll help eliminate user problems. Online catalogs interact with the user and can give himlher a sense of control if more modes of access for effective retrieval are designed. Online catalogs of the future should be more efficient if librarians have greater input in their design.     

Online Public Access Catalogs and Serials

Online public access catalogs (OPACS) enable the user to search a library's holdings in ways never before possible and to know the status of the desired items before going to the shelf. Serials constitute an important part of a library's collection. Holdings information is a necessary adjunct to bibliographic information. The online catalog of the future will give access to serial literature beyond that held by a library. As users become accustomed to the OPAC's capabilities their expectations for access to information will rise. Libraries should be aware of the factors to be considered when incorporating serials information into an online catalog. They must make decisions on what information their users need and what form of access and display will best meet that need.

Mediated Online Searching and Digital Reference

Summary

Digital reference is an important research area with the potential to enhance information delivery to library patrons. The process of digital reference involves the challenges and problems of an interactive computer-mediated reference interview. Related studies of mediated online searching have identified the major tasks during a mediated online search. The search intermediary's tasks included gathering information on the information need, previous searches on the topic by the information seeker, search terms and strategies, database selection, search procedures, system's outputs and relevance of retrieved items, and the number of topics to be searched. The information seeker's tasks include providing information to the search intermediary on their topic, discussing their previous information seeking and evaluating the online search output. Models of digital reference interviews need to include more complex information seeking behaviors, such as successive searching and multitasking. Further research is needed to extend our understanding of digital reference processes.

The future of central cities remains in serious jeopardy, even with a booming economy. Big city populations, for example, are decreasing while suburban America is growing. Part of the solution might be found in how state and federal infrastructure dollars are shared. Yet state and federal reform alone won't solve the decline. The author suggests a number of ways to merge central city resources and government reform to bring about renewal.

Online Searching for Information on Medical Devices

Librarians located in a 560-bed, inner city academic medical center with 25,000 + admissions per year planned and opened a Patient and Family Education Center (PFEC) in the lobby of a new patient care pavilion. A review of use in the first 19 months revealed that expected needs were being met while a variety of unexpected needs were identified. Ongoing use continues to be monitored by a detailed log of patron visits maintained by library staff. This article describes the evolution of the Patient and Family Education Center, outreach to the hospital community, and plans for the future.
