Subject Access to Diversity Materials:

For years, Library of Congress (LC) subject headings have been criticized for not keeping up with the times. This has never been so much in evidence as at present, when so many countries have been going through a state of flux. There has seemed to be a stubborness on the part of LC to change ethnic and racial, as well as sexual and medical headings. While it is well and good not to jump to conclusions and change everything in sigh, delaying change can frustrate users of today's online and card catalogs. After bringing readers up-to-date on the changes that have occurred over the last 20-some years, I will show how your own library's catalog can be updated, or at least rendered more useful to your patrons. In doing so, it is seen that automation can enhance, as well as prevent, subject heading updating.     

Subject Access to Individual Works of Fiction

This paper describes the OCLC/LC Fiction Project from the point of view of a cataloger participating in it. The four types of access to individual works of fiction are discussed-form/genre, character(s), geographical setting, and topical. Issues involved in applying these headings to works (such as genre definitions, the nature of fiction, intertextuality, and the cataloger's subjectivity) are also considered in regard to the Project.

学术图书开放获取与美国大学图书馆出版服务

数字出版与开放获取(Open Access,OA)运动促使大学图书馆开始探索出版服务。继学术期刊OA出版之后,学术图书OA出版也成为出版领域的重要趋向。文章分析学术出版危机与期刊OA模式的成功对学术图书OA出版的影响,学术图书OA出版的现实意义与面临的挑战,介绍美国大学图书馆的学术图书OA出版服务,最后提出我国大学图书馆开展此项服务的建议。

文章结合索引编制实践探讨了学术著作主题索引的编制,包括索引词的选取、主副标目的安排、参照系统的建构、索引编制过程中与作者及排版员的沟通,索引页码抽取后的调整和校对等,对笔者所编制的部分索引进行评析,并对提高专著索引质量进行一些思考.     

Enhanced Subject Access in Ohio Public Libraries

This article reports the findings of a survey of heads of cataloging in Ohio public libraries. The survey focused on subject enhancements in automated catalogs. Results reveal that additional subject access points and more anaytical entries ranked as the most useful enhancements for patrons. These enhancements were seen as less useful for technical services staff.     

Using Linked Open Data to Enhance Subject Access in Online Primary Sources

Using online primary sources is both rewarding and challenging for users. Improving subject access is essential as these sources become increasingly important in educational curricula. A user needs assessment with humanities users showed improving findability and context for historical subjects were major needs. Linked Data can help by linking related concepts in the sources using specialized vocabularies, enriching them with outside resources, and enabling semantic services that empower users. This article discusses a project to enhance subject access in an online World War I collection by deep linking historical data on the civilian experience in occupied Belgium and France.     

Providing Cognitively Just Subject Access to Indigenous Knowledge through Knowledge Organization Systems

This article explores cognitively just, reliable subject access to indigenous knowledge through knowledge organization systems (KOSs). Cognitive justice requires that indigenous people be able to access materials in a way that respects their worldview, yet dominant KOSs are based on positivist, Western approaches that are fundamentally incompatible. Alternatives to universal systems include the creation of new KOSs and the adaptation of universal ones. Going forward, emerging web technologies are presented as key to moving away from universalist schemes and toward specialized access.

信息资源公共获取的模式选择模型研究

本文以信息资源的开发利用最大化为目标,构建了一个信息资源公共获取的模式选择模型.该模型从信息生产和消费两个角度,将信息资源的公共获取分为四种模式;同时根据信息的公共属性以及其是否属于政府的法定工作范围,确定这四种公共获取模式的适用条件.在此基础上,本文指出那些属于政府法定工作范围的信息应当由政府来进行生产,其他信息则交由社会机构生产;公共性强的信息资源应当免费或以边际成本价格向民众提供,公共性弱的信息则可根据市场价格来提供.另外本文分析了信息资源的内在属性以及外部的社会经济环境对公共获取模式选择的影响.

On the Spatial Approach to Urban Communication Studies

The spatial and structures of turn of social science has transferred the scholar＇ s attention on history, time and social relationship cities to that on the interaction between spatiality, the social process and spatial patterns as well as the multiple possibilities to establish the social-spatial dialectics, which gives rise to thinking about the spatial ap- proach to urban communication studies. The premise to introduce spatial approach into urban communication is to take the physical space as research object, which used to be neglected by scholars. Based on the premise, the communicative relationship and interaction between the three levels, namely people -people, people-substance and sub- stance-substance generate the urban communication powers, which should be reviewed. As a result, it will benefits the estabIishment of urban communication paradigm.
