The Information Society in the 21st Century: Converting from Analogue to Digital

Digital information and the proliferation of networks for its delivery are accelerating the emergence of the “Information Society”. Its technical development and widespread use have, however, outpaced consideration for security, privacy, and the ethics of the production and the dissemination of content. The prospects offered today by both the multimedia traffic and the millions of users accessing and transmitting digital information have also prompted the creation of large multinational conglomerates and agreements to exploit the resulting market potential. All of the above aspects need now to be addressed in order to make appropriate recommendations for their handling.     

MARC to BIBFRAME: Converting the PCC to Linked Data

Abstract

The Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC) has formal relationships with the Library of Congress (LC), Share-VDE, and Linked Data for Production Phase 2 (LD4P2) for work on Bibliographic Framework (BIBFRAME), and PCC institutions have been very active in the exploration of MARC to BIBFRAME conversion processes. This article will review the involvement of PCC in the development of BIBFRAME and examine the work of LC, Share-VDE, and LD4P2 on MARC to BIBFRAME conversion. It will conclude with a discussion of areas for further exploration by the PCC leading up to the creation of PCC conversion specifications and PCC BIBFRAME data.

Converting an intranet site to the cloud: using CampusGuides to refresh a library portal

After a major redesign project in 2002, Mayo Clinic Libraries' heavily used intranet portal remained largely static. Library staff were unable to make substantive design changes or introduce tools that would make the content more dynamic. CampusGuides offered a practical, user-friendly, web-based solution to add dynamic content to the library site. A task force was formed both to establish design and style guidelines that would integrate with the library site and to plan the conversion of content to CampusGuides. Converting intranet site content to CampusGuides gave the task force the opportunity to examine, re-imagine, and revitalize site content.

Statistical Survey to Determine Availability of Cataloging Copy on OCLC

This paper reports the results of a year-long survey conducted at the University of Pittsburgh (Pitt) to determine what level of cataloging copy (Library of Congress, member input, or none) is present on OCLC at the time an item is received in Technical Services and after a six-month waiting period. These results were used to divert selected monographs from the normal workflow in order to expedite their cataloging and to release needed shelf space for other items.

HTML到XML转换技术的研究与实现

网络上大多数的信息都是用HTML写的，这种语言不能处理网络上的很多需求，因为它只是一种用于浏览信息的语言，不能表达数据本身，网络还没有形成一个良好的结构化文档的存贮，而只是一个可变的HTML页的聚集，我们迫切希望来自网络资源的信息以一种结构化的方式来存贮。XML和它的各种扩展功能如数据模型、查询语言等是实现结构化方式的一种，是一种元语言，可以弥补很多HTML的不足。未来的网页会使用具有很好结构化的XML语言，但是现在这一阶段是过渡阶段，必须思考一种方法来实现HTML到XML的转换．以更好地利用网络资源。本文提出了一种实现HTML到XML转换的方法。     

难觅一方“静”土——顾颉刚的喟叹

正顾颉刚(1893-1980),既是学界中人,又曾涉足政界、商界。他孜孜于学术,又常常为生计所困;为求得一个优良的治学环境,不惜辗转于各大学,其间甚感难觅"静土"。有幸的是,1948年6月,他在兰州大学讲学期间获得一方"静土"。顾颉刚曲折复杂的心路历程折射出民国知识分子的诸多面相:自由流动中的无奈、纠结、隐忍与挣扎;在政潮、学派、学风、经费、人事等诸多纷扰中祈求治学的安宁。同时,也可窥见其在1949年后欲专心学术而不能的苦闷。     

缩微胶片档案醋酸综合症监测研究—以中国民族图书馆为例

我国档案馆、图书馆等机构保存了大量的缩微胶片档案,醋酸综合症是影响缩微胶片档案寿命最为重要的原因。近30年来,缩微胶片档案一直受到醋酸综合症的困扰,如何及时监测醋酸综合症是影像档案保护研究的热点和难点。本文对中国民族图书馆缩微胶片档案的保存现状进行调研,以AD试纸监测醋酸综合症发生、发展及其对缩微胶片档案的影响。研究发现,AD试纸能够准确监测醋酸综合症的发生,在缩微胶片档案保护中起到预示和监测作用,能够更好地防治醋酸综合症。
