Recognising the relevance of Iris Marion Young's work to education, this article poses the question: given Iris Young's commitment to both social justice and to recognition of the political and ethical significance of difference, to what extent does her position allow for transnational interventions in education to foster democracy? First, it explores some of Iris Young's arguments on the relationship between democracy and social justice, with particular reference to their implications for education. Second, I argue that if her ideas are extended to the issue of global justice, the strategies which she offers should be extended, at least when it comes to educational intervention, to allow for a wider range of actions in support of global justice through education for democracy than Iris Young's work so far seems to allow. The wider range of strategies which I propose call on western feminists and their governments to do more to promote democracy and social justice globally. This can be done in ways that are consistent with Iris Young's stipulation that transnational interference is permissible if undertaken against dominative harm.  相似文献

Over the past few decades, school closure has emerged as a key strategy for education reform. Districts across the country have moved to close schools deemed to be chronically underperforming by official metrics as way to promote academic achievement. More recently, a sizeable body of literature has emerged raising significant questions about the wisdom of school closures, with some scholars and activists criticizing school closures as an injustice. In this article, Ellis Reid takes seriously the claim that the adoption of school closures as a reform strategy is unjust. Drawing on work in democratic theory, Reid argues that the widespread embrace of school closures to "turn around" schools thought to be failing rests in part on racially stigmatizing ideas about schools serving Black and Latinx students and the communities in which these schools are embedded. Importantly, racial stigmatization is not an isolated problem but rather points toward a broader crisis in American democracy. Ultimately, Reid argues that responding to this crisis demands that we take seriously the arguments advanced by the critics of school closures and adopt a broader view of the value of a school.  相似文献

和谐或社会和谐是以儒家学说为代表的中国传统文化的核心理念;“公正即和谐,和谐须公正”是西方伦理文化的一个经典命题;“贵公正,促和谐”,“社会和谐的基本条件是公平正义”,这些是中、西方两种伦理文化的共同启示。闺此,为了创设社会和谐的基本条件,首先要夯实公平正义的道德基础。这就要深入开展公正教育、公仆教育和公民教育,促进落实当代中国社会公正原则,并努力建设社会主义公民文化,培育一代又一代充满公平正义的和谐精神、人格健全的现代公民。  相似文献

While many policies, pieces of legislation and educational discourse focus on the concept of inclusion, or inclusive education, the field of education as a whole lacks a clear, precise and comprehensive definition that is both globally sensitive and based in social justice. Even international efforts including the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the Education for All action merely reproduce efforts in the West, especially those of the United States and the United Kingdom. The current article proposes a definition for inclusive education that is both globally sensitive and centred around social justice for individuals with exceptionalities.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This article examines the complex but seldom articulated relationship of primary physical education, citizenship, and social justice. We argue that to conflate physical activity and sport with physical education in unacknowledged ways may serve to perpetuate the status quo. More significantly, the current emphasis on activity through competitive sport in the teaching of physical education in primary schools is both reductive and educationally limiting, affecting not only teachers’ professionalism but the wider educational experience of young people. The trend towards competitive sport at the expense of a broader educational experience further represents a potentially serious omission: an abrogation of responsibility on the part of schools in England and Wales to meet the statutory requirements of the Education Reform Act (1988). On the thirtieth anniversary of the Act, we adopt a novel approach, utilizing Foucauldian ideas, to examine movements in the development of policy and understand the contemporary context as a means to suggest more propitious ways forward.  相似文献

Posing an alternate view to high stakes educational models, the thoughts, opinions and practices of four poetry educators are used to provide critical insights as how to infuse creative outlets in the educational process. In gathering the motivations of these poetry educators, a goal of this project is to encapsulate their philosophies through researcher observation and participation. Engaging such work with social justice at the center creates a particular disposition. ABSTRACT

In this article, we suggest that character education in sport contexts can promote social justice. After defining key terms, we suggest that rethinking competition and the nature of team relationships is required to build a team culture responsive to concerns for social justice. The character of the team provides a nexus within which to develop individual character, which is elaborated in terms of four types of character: moral, civic, intellectual, and performance character. To promote commitment to social justice, character educators can focus on three elements of moral character: moral reasoning, the circle of moral regard, and moral identity. Within civic character, three themes are elaborated: human dignity, full participation, and accountability. The dimensions of critical thinking, willful ignorance, and prioritizing the marginalized are discussed in relation to intellectual character. Performance character is discussed in relation to an ethic of excellence. Finally, conclusions for character educators are elaborated.  相似文献

协商民主具有破解村民自治"四大民主要素"发展失衡,纠正村民自治中民主决策和民主管理主体错位,防止村民自治中村民享有的权利被悬置,克服实践中村民自治制度被异化,破解级差政治信任的结构性风险等重要价值。但协商民主嵌入村民自治也面临缺乏法律依据,乡村干部积极性不高,自治主体协商能力薄弱和政治冷漠,自治的制度环境变迁等挑战。解决这些难题需要加强党的领导,推动协商民主,国家要为村民自治提供法规保障,建立推进协商民主嵌入村民自治的组织工作制度,培育和提高村民的协商能力与热情,适应制度环境变迁,探索推进协商民主嵌入村民自治的适度单元。  相似文献

随着农村经济社会发展,我国现行乡镇治理机制在职能配置、治理结构、社会监督等方面呈现出不适应性,有必要通过加快发展基层协商民主予以优化。丽水市雅溪镇探索“联合治事、跨村理事、协商办事”的联合自治机制,通过构筑开放式组织化协商载体、创新融入式工作方法、畅通全方位协商渠道、健全系统化协商制度保障,保障了基层协商民主发展所需的平台开放性、行为集体性、机会均等性、决策协商性等要素,优化了乡镇治理。雅溪镇的探索对发展基层协商民主提供有益的个案思考,具有深刻的价值意蕴。  相似文献

民主作为现代化的一种内在特质,随着现代化的全球性展开,表现为一种世界性的潮流。但不同民族国家实现民主的道路、民主实现的具体样式,并没有一个统一的模板,必然是各有自己的特殊性。鉴于中国的特殊国情和历史,中国现代化所处的特殊阶段,中国的民主政治建设,不能离开也不能绕开中国共产党的领导。以党内民主推进社会民主,应看做是中国民主化道路的合理选择。  相似文献

In this article we share several activities we use in our teacher education literacy courses that incorporate a social justice lens. For each activity we suggest resources, offer examples we have created and used in our teaching, and share research to support each activity. The activities build on each other, with the intent of increasing preservice teacher knowledge of how to teach for social justice by moving beyond awareness and understanding lived experiences of students to affirming cultures and experiences of all students, creating inclusive and equitable classrooms. By experiencing teaching from this stance in our courses, we hope that our preservice teachers take up and teach from a social justice stance in their future classrooms.  相似文献

The Labour government showed no interest in extending local democracy in the school system, in spite of a policy rhetoric of local democratic renewal. The Conservative–Liberal Democrat coalition government's localism agenda promotes the autonomy of schools from local authorities without proposing alternative forms of local democracy in the school system. The perspective of this paper is derived from a Gramscian Marxist critique of dominant discourses within the field of urban governance. From this vantage point it examines the research evidence regarding participation in governance within local school systems. It ends by offering an alternative approach towards more democratic participative governance in local school systems based on a recognition of conflicting class interests and the need to re-envision the role of local authorities.  相似文献

The primary purpose of faculty development is to create and sustain a culture of teaching excellence. For social work faculty, an important part of teaching excellence involves incorporating core social work values such as social justice and diversity across the curriculum and developing pedagogical skills and strategies to teach these issues effectively. In this article, we present a model of a faculty development seminar that offers a facilitated space for instructors to discuss how issues of diversity, social identity, and oppression influence their teaching, the classroom environment, student interactions, and the overall campus climate.  相似文献
