This article reports on findings from a research project that investigated the experiences and perceptions of final‐year social science undergraduates enrolled on a dissertation module in a post‐1992 UK university. The dissertation was designed to provide students with the opportunity to function autonomously and determine the content and focus of a major part of their study and assessment. Using data from interviews and questionnaires, the article explores the students’ lived experience of the dissertation as a form of independent learning and assessment, the challenges they encountered, and their perceptions of peer and tutor support. While students valued the autonomy, authenticity, and ownership they felt in relation to their dissertation, they also experienced considerable challenges, particularly in relation to ‘time’. 相似文献

Although the completed doctoral dissertation represents the culmination of a doctoral program, is often published in journal articles, and serves as the foundation of the early research career of the author, the dissertation has received relatively little attention as a subject of research in its own right. To learn more about how students select their dissertation topics, all doctoral graduates of a major midwestern research university over the one year period from spring quarter, 1986, through winter quarter, 1987, were surveyed. Results indicate that a number of factors influence the selection of a dissertation topic, but not surprisingly the most important is the student's own preference. The factors affecting the choice of topics include the preference of the adviser, trends in the field, the likelihood that the research will be published, and the projected benefit of the research on the student's job prospects. The importance of the factors vary by field and in some cases by gender. When students select their topic and the extent to which the adviser and dissertation committees are responsive to the student also vary by field. 相似文献

This paper proposes an alternative format for reporting thesis/dissertation research that should lead to more rapid publication of quality research. The purposes of the thesis/dissertation and characteristics and limitations of the traditional thesis/dissertation format are reviewed. This is followed by a discussion of the advantages of the alternative format in overcoming the shortcomings of the conventional style. Postgraduate study is something of growth industry with, worldwide, a substantial increase in the number of courses offered and students enrolled (Kerlin, 1995). A substantial part of the requirements for the successful completion of a research degree is that the research conducted should be in some way original and also make a worthwhile contribution to knowledge. Given these requirements it would be expected that the dissemination of the results of the research should be a routine part of the process of postgraduate study and its aftermath. However, it would seem that this is not the case and that the progression from completed dissertation to publication is not the universal experience. Certainly, those publications which deal with 'how to' get a research degree rarely if ever specifically address the issue of dissemination at any length. One would assume that supervisors of postgraduate research would see advice about the matter as one of their duties but it is not at all obvious whether this is the case. This article reports the results of two international studies of the experience of 'doing the degree' conducted with samples of 139 and 53 doctoral holders. Specifically, it concentrates on the participants' experiences of disseminating, or otherwise, the results of their research. 相似文献

In the context of teaching in higher education story writing as an aid to reflection on practice would seem to be a little-used research tool. We examine its value as part of an action research project focusing on dissertation supervision, in which five lecturers were invited to write stories on this theme. The ways in which this dimension was introduced into the project are explored, and its distinctive contribution to the research, together with the use of interviews and group discussion, is discussed. We consider the purposes of story writing within action research, and the ways in which it might benefit both writer and readers, and offer suggestions for how others might develop this aspect of action research into teaching in higher education. 相似文献

在现行博士学位论文评阅制度下,博士论文双盲评阅主要面临两类风险:一类是将合格的论文评审为不合格论文,另一类是将不合格论文评审为通过。基于专家评阅水平和博士学位论文的质量水平,建立了博士论文双盲评阅风险与评阅专家数量、评阅通过规则之间的关系模型。最后,通过运用模型进行计算分析,得出了不同假设情况下两类风险水平的变化规律。 相似文献

参考文献的引用和著录是学位论文的重要组成部分,规范运用参考文献的引用和著录。可以体现作者严谨求实的科研素养。以T校英语专业近三届的优秀学位论文为研究对象,通过对文后参考文献的“权威”度、“广”度、“鲜”度和“精”度四大特点进行统计处理,发现参考文献引用类型集中、质量较低、部分著录不规范等问题,并提出一些相应措施促进参考文献的引用逐步走向规范化,以期进一步提高毕业论文质量和本科生的科研素养。 相似文献

This article presents a discussion of research and theoretical perspectives on creativity and instructional design, offering
a conceptual model of the connection between these two constructs that was originally proposed in the dissertation work of
the first author (Clinton, Creativity and design: A study of the learning experience of instructional design and development
graduate students, Unpublished doctoral dissertation, University of Georgia, Athens, 2007) and that we call the Design/Creativity
Loops (DCL) model. Central to the model is a representation of the iterative, looping problem-solving cycle that can include
established stages of creative thinking. As an instructional designer is routinely confronted with the next task or design
problem in a project, these tasks or problems spawn iterative mental excursions that are opportunities for creative thinking.
This article also explores ways that the design and development process can benefit from an emphasis on creativity and offers
