介绍国外利用口述历史从事图书馆史研究的情况,以及图书馆开展口述历史工作的方法,意在为我国图书馆史的研究和史料的收集提供一种新的途径。     

Degradation of cellulose nitrate adhesive

Abstract

An adhesive based on cellulose nitrate has been used in the British Museum for the repair of antiquities since cellulose nitrate plastic was first made commercially available. The use of cellulose nitrate adhesives in conservation has been criticized and for this reason the stability of the adhesive currently in use has been investigated. The properties of artificially aged samples of the adhesive have been compared with those of artificially aged adhesive-grade cellulose nitrate. The results indicate that the degradation of cellulose nitrate is substantially retarded by the plasticizer in the adhesive. Samples of cellulose nitrate adhesive taken from joins in objects where the date of conservation work is known have been analyzed. The results have been compared with the analysis of the artificially aged samples and a relationship between natural and artificial aging of cellulose nitrate adhesive has been established. The results of this investigation indicate that cellulose nitrate adhesives are stable for at least 30 years, and may be extrapolated to suggest a lifetime of 50 to 100 years under museum conditions in a temperate climate.

The Role of Libraries in Web-Based Distance Education

Abstract

Even though distance education has a long and diverse history, dating back to 1840, in the last ten-to-fifteen years it has been completely transformed by the emergence of Web-based technology. This technology has had an enormous impact on all aspects of distance education (or distance learning as it is increasingly called). In addition to palpable changes in the teaching and learning processes, library and other support services are also being challenged by change. This paper will provide a brief account and analysis of the impact of Web technology on distance education, as well as its impact on the role of library services for distance learners.     

基于用户信息共享的图书馆合作模式研究

[目的/意义] 探讨在用户信息作为共享资源基础上的图书馆合作问题,为广泛合作提供一种新视角。[方法/过程] 采用文献调研和专家访谈方法,并借鉴图书馆传统合作经验,提出在用户信息共享基础上的图书馆合作新模式,即以共享的用户信息作为"胶粘剂",将图书馆与用户、所属机构内部其他部门、其他图书馆、商业信息/服务提供商等关联起来,进行广泛地合作。[结果/结论] 与传统图书馆合作模式相比,图书馆合作新模式在合作对象、合作规模等方面都凸显了用户信息共享的价值。     

The Difficult Library Patron

Summary

The issue of the difficult library patron has been of growing concern to the library community in the last decade. A number of monographs and journal articles have been published on this topic in recent years. This article surveys the literature concerning the problem library user including the homeless, the de-institutionalized, the mentally ill, and angry/frustrated patrons. It includes literature which discusses techniques for empowering front-line employees in handling various user behaviors and responding to patron problems.

So you have to cancel journals? statistics that help

Few libraries have been immune to the impact of inflation on journal prices, and many have been involved in extensive journal cancellation projects. To aid in the cancellation decision process, Colorado State University Libraries have been compiling internal statistics on journal usage and merging them with statistics from commercial sources. This paper describes the process and outlines how the collected data can be used both to identify journals for cancellation and to provide justification for these decisions to the campus community.As the inflation rate of journals has outstripped many library budgets, cancellation projects have become a routine part of library collection management for universities. These projects are extremely difficult since decisions have serious implications for the collection and library relations with the academic departments. Deciding which journals should be canceled becomes a serious and frustrating task. Statistical information about a library collection can be a valuable tool in both identifying journals for cancellation and justifying cancellation decisions. The Colorado State University Libraries (CSUL) have been collecting a variety of statistics about the periodicals collection for several years. This article will discuss how these statistics were used in a recent cancellation project.     

2008—2013年我国数字图书馆可持续发展定量研究

Leveraging Library Technology: Non-Library Uses of Library Technology

The library has experienced many conversations with colleagues at the college in different departments lately related to the library tools and services it offers. Some of these conversations have included senior administrators, who have at some point directly supervised the library. In order for senior administrators to advocate for the library, librarians must educate them on the tools and services the library offers to its customers. Springshare’s LibApps is one such tool that has been integral to library operations. In the few years since the library has subscribed to Springshare’s LibApps’ suite of tools, Office of Institutional Research & Training (OIRT) has successfully utilized this library-specific tool, which has justified the annual renewal of this software tool by senior administration. For more departments at the college to adopt these tools and integrate them into their day-to-day tasks, librarians must educate customers (student, staff, and faculty) as well as administration about this and other library-specific tools. Since Springshare markets to and for librarians and as more librarians write about how this tool can be used for a variety of different applications, then other departments college-wide will become aware of and then adopt Springshare’s LibApps’ suite of tools.

Medical information provision in Seychelles: development,current state and future focus

Medical information in Seychelles is provided by a library and documentation unit within the Ministry of Health. This unit has been in operation for 10 years and during this time has expanded in the number and type of services provided. This short report describes the current situation at the library and the vision for the next 10 years.
