介绍日本大学图书馆总体情况,详细描述武藏工业大学图书馆、芝浦工业大学图书馆、成蹊大学图书馆、琉球大学图书馆的建筑特色,分析日本大学图书馆的服务特点及最新动态,提出借鉴其建筑特点和"开放大学图书馆,服务周边社会"、"建立机构资料库"等做法,发展我国大学图书馆,以适应现代社会终身学习的要求,将大学图书馆从文献收藏者转向学习和研究的孵化者、培养者,参与不同环境的知识创造、传播和使用过程。     

Money and Leadership: A Study of Theses on Public School Libraries Submitted to the University of the Philippines' Institute of Library and Information Science

The author suggests the importance of knowledgeable leadership as a factor in improving Philippine school libraries. He offers a brief case study of how two different libraries fared with similar levels of funding. One without outstanding leadership did not advance; the other with knowledgeable leadership made large advances. This report is drawn from the author's earlier degree research at the University of the Philippines' Institute of Library and Information Science.     

广西社区图书馆建设新探

根据广西经济文化发展状况,提出城市(包括旧城区、新城区)社区图书馆的建设方法,认为旧城区社区图书馆建设应以整合社区内原有的单位图书馆为主,政府投资新建(社区范围内无图书馆的)为辅,新建社区则可与物业管理部门共同建立社区图书馆,并鼓励兴办私立社区图书馆。     

公共图书馆与社区文化建设

通过对社区与社区建设的概念和内涵以及公共图书馆事业发展趋势的分析，提出了公共图书馆如何为社区文化建设服务的建议：为社区教育服务，建立社区分馆；为社区提供文献信息服务；为社区大众的健康休闲服务。从而更好地推动图书馆事业的发展，提高全民族人口素质。     

基于读者属性分析的图书馆空间再造研究

[目的/意义]现阶段很多图书馆都出现了空间不足、环境老化的现象,空间再造成为图书馆的一个迫在眉睫、亟待解决的重大课题。[方法/过程]根据图书馆空间五要素要求原则,从读者属性角度分析图书馆空间短缺的原因是来自读者对图书馆空间的需求差异,把握读者属性的特点才能更好的进行空间再造。[结果/结论]针对不同类型的图书馆给出有效改善图书馆空间紧缩或阅读空间空置率高等现状的相应思路。     

高校图书馆年度报告的实践及其发展研究

调查表明,年度报告工作已经受到越来越多高校图书馆的关注,但还没有在高校图书馆普遍开展。文章收集我国26所高校图书馆共118份图书馆年度报告,选择其中10所高校图书馆年度报告作为样本,对其年度报告体例、内容要点、编写的具体事项等进行整理、统计和分析研究,研究结果可对各高校图书馆编制年度报告时应注意的事项提供借鉴和参考,有关年度报告工作改进与发展的建议将有利于年度报告工作向更高一个层面发展。     

The Evolution of GIS Services within North American Academic Libraries: Documenting Change through the Decades (1995–2016)

This review was conducted to identify articles written about Geographic Information Systems (GIS) services offered in the United States (US) and Canadian university and college libraries. In the early 1990's, the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) GIS Literacy Project, in partnership with Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI), helped enable ARL member libraries to create GIS services within their libraries. By the mid to late 1990's, librarians from academic institutions began to write articles that discussed how their library developed GIS services and the components involved with operating a GIS service. Writing about GIS services in academic libraries continued on into the 2000's and 2010's. This review of the literature will document the areas of staffing, service, technology, and data provision for GIS service units from three decades (1990's, 2000's, and 2010's).

近年来,在图书馆价值评估活动的影响下,越来越多的美国高校图书馆开始参与到学习分析项目中来。《图书馆机构学习分析整合》是美国博物馆和图书馆服务研究所基于三次全国图书馆学习分析整合信息论坛讨论结果发布的报告,内容涉及图书馆机构学习分析整合形式,支持图书馆参与学习分析的策略方法,图书馆机构学习分析整合障碍及未来努力方向等。该报告对于指导图书馆员如何参与学习分析及应对学习分析带来的挑战具有重要的价值和意义。

《图书馆连接社区:公共图书馆经费和技术获取研究》是由盖茨.梅琳达基金会和美国图书馆协会共同资助,并在美国图书馆协会、马里兰大学图书馆与信息创新中心和佛罗里达州大学信息学院指导下完成的一项年度报告。报告在广泛的数据调查基础上描述了2009年度美国公共图书馆的状况,包括技术接入、经费下降与服务需求增加等问题。此外,报告还揭示了美国公共图书馆需求与服务之间的矛盾,在此基础上,报告提出了未来行动的呼吁。     

Connecting with Community: The Importance of Community Engagement in Rural Public Library Systems

While the topic of community engagement in public libraries has been researched in urban public library systems, little research explores community engagement in rural library systems. The Canadian province of Nova Scotia is largely rural and sparsely populated, with a dwindling and aging rural population. This report examines how community engagement can connect Nova Scotia’s rural public libraries with their communities. Librarians from eight predominantly rural library systems across the province were interviewed regarding the community engagement practices currently being used within their libraries and how their patrons (particularly youth) were reacting and responding to these practices. This article synthesizes the information derived from these interviews and provides a summary of the community engagement efforts being made throughout Nova Scotia. This study ultimately determines that while librarians in rural communities face a number of challenges when attempting to implement community engagement (e.g., small budgets and low staffing numbers), they remain extremely passionate about the topic and dedicated to serving their communities in the most meaningful and relevant way possible.

Our User Experience: Puzzle Pieces Falling into Place—Workshop Report

In a keynote address to attendees of the Seventh Annual E-resource Workshop at Mississippi State University, Stephen Abram from the SirsiDynix Institute told librarians to prepare for the new generation of users and the way they learn. Libraries must evolve into “social learning centers” with an emphasis on the why and how of information seeking. In this new setting, librarians will be the navigators. He offered ten suggestions to libraries that want to prepare for the future; these recommendations cover new technologies, social networking, and new models of organization among staff. Ultimately, the future of librarianship depends on how libraries communicate and grow with the new learning communities.     

The Forecast for Special Libraries

ABSTRACT

Special libraries exist in an ecosystem consisting of the information industry, the library world, their own organizations, and workforce demographics. Librarians need to be aware of the trends shaping all of these facets. This column takes a close look at Outsell's Information Industry Outlook report for 2016 and its implications for special libraries. The outlook for special libraries is neither the previously forecast Baby Boomer retirement crisis nor the dire end of special libraries many feared during the recent recession. Instead, the special library world is transforming, creating both challenges and opportunities for special librarians. Millennials entering both the workforce at large and the library workforce will make their presence known. Savvy information professionals will stay on top of these trends and find their niche, whether in a traditional physical library or in emerging careers outside the library.

Column Editor’s NoteSpecial libraries share concerns with their more general academic, public, and school counterparts, but they also have unique characteristics and concerns which merit separate consideration. Libraries of all types are evolving, and just as special libraries can learn from the general literature on libraries, practitioners in all types of libraries can learn from the experiences and best practices of special libraries. “The Specialist,” appearing in even-numbered issues of this journal, addresses the administrative concerns of special libraries. The column's scope is a broad umbrella of specialized librarianship and includes corporate, non-profit, government, and independent libraries as well as the specialized departments and branches of academic and public libraries. Contributions from practitioners and scholars on any aspect of special libraries are welcome. Meeting the Needs of Avid Book Readers: Access,Space, Concentration Support and Barrier Mitigation

Contemporary libraries perform multiple roles that greatly expand the scope of traditional service and resource provision. In order to determine how libraries can best meet the needs of avid book reading clientele, more needs to be known about their preferences of access and space, as well as barriers to their concentration and performance of sustained reading. Findings from the 2015 International Study of Avid Book Readers suggest that libraries should offer comfortable and quiet spaces conducive to reading for pleasure, that are responsive to the time, cost and concentration barriers that avid readers face, and not assume that avid readers will easily adapt to library environments with elevated noise levels.     

美国公共图书馆社区信息服务的发展及其启示

文章首先介绍了美国公共图书馆社区信息服务的产生与发展，其次说明社区信息服务在美国社区建设过程中所起到的作用，最后指出美国公共图书馆社区信息服务的发展给我国图书馆界的启示。作者认为，社区信息服务是我国公共图书馆向信息化发展的关键，而公共图书馆在开展社区信息服务的过程中应注重合作伙伴关系的建立、充分利用现有的信息技术，并注意服务的推广和用户的培训。     

Library Startup: Reflections on Building a New Community College Library from Scratch

ABSTRACT

The author describes the challenges and rewards of creating and growing a new community college library from the ground up, sharing details about the new college, the state of the library when she arrived as director, and the process of prioritizing the organization's development. She further describes particular lessons gained through this experience, including maintaining perspective, focusing growth in productive directions, and being willing to experiment even if it means there will be failure as well as success. The article will appeal in particular to librarians who have the rare opportunity to launch a new college library as well as those who are working on reinventing small college libraries.     

Outreach

Abstract

Academic libraries have often participated in outreach to their surrounding communities. This article focuses on independent outreach efforts of academic libraries to move beyond their walls or traditional clientele. Academic libraries determine their interaction with their communities based on three factors: whether a need is expressed from outside the academy, whether they see their mission as an invitation to pursue an action on their own accord, or whether they construct a form of outreach in response to a specific problem or crisis. Most libraries, public and private, recognize outreach as part of their mission and obligation to the community. This article examines why libraries choose to initiate outreach programs.
