Journal article mining: the scholarly publishers' perspective

The essence of text mining and data mining is that a machine and software are used for content analysis of large digital corpora. The Publishing Research Consortium commissioned a study on content mining of scholarly journal articles with 29 expert interviews and an international survey among publishers. The main results are: (i) content mining developments appear to be accelerating with more applications in more areas; (ii) third‐party demand for content mining is widespread but still at low levels of frequency; (iii) publishers' permissions for content mining are quite liberal, especially for research‐driven mining requests; (iv) half of the publisher respondents undertake mining of their own content; and (v) content mining is on the rise – publishers and third parties both report an increase in planned mining activities. As content mining of journal articles spreads and intensifies, cross‐publisher solutions can better help facilitate content mining. The study investigated the interest and willingness of publishers to support a set of different solutions, from one shared content mining platform to commonly agreed access terms for mining and standardization of mining‐friendly content formats.     

Scholarly book publishing practice: the ALPSP survey findings

In summer 2009 ALPSP undertook the first industry‐wide survey into scholarly book publishing practice. This article covers the key findings and attempts to describe the current scholarly book and e‐book publishing landscape. Publishers' development of e‐books varies considerably from early experimentation to being a standard component of their publishing programme. However, publishers of all shapes and sizes have developed some common policies and practices despite the rapid evolution of an emerging element of scholarly publishing. E‐books currently make up a small, if growing, proportion of total book sales, although they are currently one of the most talked about developments in the entire publishing industry.     

需求驱动采购的标准:美国NISO DDA的发展和作用

[目的/意义]探讨美国图书馆需求驱动采购（DDA）的标准化发展,介绍美国国家信息标准协会（NISO）出版的《图书的需求驱动采购推荐实施规范》（NISO DDA）,为中国图书馆DDA标准化建设提供参考。[方法/过程]通过文献考察,介绍NISO DDA产生的背景、规范的制定过程、规范的要素、作用以及NISO DDA应用中面临的挑战。[结果/结论]NISO DDA为DDA走向标准化和可持续发展奠定了基础。它对保护图书馆、出版商、经销商、电子图书数据库集成商等各利益相关者的利益,以及对各方在合作共赢的基础上规范化采纳推广DDA提供指南并起到积极的作用。同时,DDA的可持续发展继续面临着挑战。图书出版链中的各利益相关者仍然为DDA的可持续发展及标准化建设积极探索。     

替代计量视角下学术成果影响力评估:NISO AMMP项目剖析

[目的/意义]对美国国家信息标准协会(NISO)发布的"替代计量评价指标的推荐实施规范"(AMMP)进行研究,以推动我国图书馆界对AMMP项目的深入了解,突破传统学术评价局限,促进替代计量在国内的应用以及新科学交流评价体系的构建。[方法/过程]介绍AMMP产生的背景、发展、主要内容及特点,同时对该推荐实践规范推广和相关组织应用进行总结。在此基础上,对国内Altmetrics未来发展、一流期刊建设和研究数据集平台建设等提出建议。[结果/结论]AMMP通过分析利益相关者共性需求,明确替代计量适用成果类型,针对研究数据、永久标识符、数据质量等方面提出一系列推荐实施规范,为数据提供者或数据集成者的实践提供依据,有益于促进替代计量评价指标的标准化建设。     

编辑如何通过审稿与退修提高综述文章的质量

综述是科技期刊一种重要的文体.编辑应在审稿过程中从选题、提纲、文献、分析评价、文本等方面对综述稿件的质量做出整体评价,并从优化选题、深化提纲、筛选文献、有机组织材料、修改文本等方面分别提出修改建议,以提高综述文章的水平.

为更好地推动工程技术类期刊封面文章的策划与传播,以《中国航空学报(英文版)》为例,探讨了封面文章的遴选、封面文章的设计难点与应对措施及封面文章的宣传等问题。工程技术期刊应当面向国家重大需求,从专业深度、创新性、工程应用价值和前沿性等方面遴选封面文章;以学术编辑为主导、联合作者与美术设计师共同构思是设计出精美封面的关键;对封面文章进行全方位的宣传不仅能提升期刊的品牌形象和影响力,也有助于吸引优质稿件,进而引领学科发展。     

Surveillance/Discipline/Resistance: Carly Fiorina under the Gaze of The Wall Street Journal

This essay examines how news discourses of former Hewlett Packard CEO Carly Fiorina shaped her professional persona throughout her tenure with the company. At a time when only eight out of the Fortune 500 companies had female CEOs, she was often identified as the most powerful female CEO in the United States. This high-profile position brought with it much media attention and focus on her gender, her performance, and her “visibility.” Through a Foucauldian analysis of The Wall Street Journal, I illustrate how Fiorina's public identity was shaped and disciplined through the popular press and explore the opportunities for resisting certain subject positions. This analysis reveals the complex relationships between organizations and broader social discourses that involve gendered workplaces, glass ceilings, and even the role of the visual in organizational life.     

Author's version vs. publisher's version: an analysis of the copy‐editing function

This report describes an informal study carried out by Blackwell Publishing to assess whether the copy‐editing and proof‐correction process alone results in a significant difference between the author's version and the publisher's version of an article accepted for publication. One hundred and eighty‐nine articles were reviewed from 23 journals. The results indicate that a substantial number of changes are made. It is suggested that copy‐editing has an equal role to play in both the printed and online environments, and that in the latter it contributes substantially to the accuracy of the electronic version. Copy‐editing is therefore an important function within the publisher's overall responsibility towards the integrity of the article of record.     

数据期刊:未来学术期刊发展的新趋势

数据期刊是一种近年来新兴的数据出版形式.其区别于传统学术期刊出版的主要特征有以下几点:数字化的联机出版形式;出版后,数据并不是固定不变的,而是在不断地被使用和被论证中逐渐完善,从而更加精准;数据提供者须注明允许其所提供数据的全面授权使用,并且要自行寻找数据库存放数据,之后数据期刊经确认可以链接之后才会编辑出版等.文章认为数据期刊的出版是国际学术发展的大势所趋,我国应给予关注和重视.     

电子期刊:现状与发展

在介绍了电子期刊的概念与特点后,阐述了我国电子期刊的发展及现状,深入分析了其存在的问题,并针对我国电子期刊的未来发展,提出了几点建设性意见。     

Knowing your users: the value of article database usage analysis

This study analyzes the usage data of a major engineering article database, IEEE Xplore, from 2005 to 2008, at Texas A&M University. Usage data collected from the IEEE Xplore statistics website demonstrated some interesting patterns of user behavior. Usage of the database increased steadily from 2005 to 2007, but dropped in 2008 due to the launch of the library's new website; off‐campus usage was high in the first two years, but plunged in 2007 and 2008. Users from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and, to a lesser degree, from the Computer Science Department, were identified as major users of the database by IP statistics. The most heavily used journals and articles indicated that solid‐state circuits, microwave, information theory, and power systems were probably among core research areas in electrical and computer engineering for the university. The impact of conference articles in this database increased continuously throughout these years.     

A Journal from the South: Lithuanian Papers

The Australian peer-reviewed journal Lithuanian Papers has been published since 1987 in Hobart, Tasmania. The editor summarizes its history and invites readers to subscribe.     

Journal production: the right medium for the task

Academic journal publishing is the communication of research results to the academic community. This paper considers the various media available for publication: principally, print–on–paper, CDs, and online ‘pure’ electronic publication, in terms of the implications of the technologies, the time involved and the cost. The importance of the publisher's contribution, in terms of peer review, copy editing and design, is also discussed. It is concluded that there is no absolute right medium, but that the publisher's contribution is vital whatever the medium used.
