Who Are We Missing? Conducting a Diversity Audit in a Liberal Arts College Library

In the spring of 2021, Thomas Tredway Library at Augustana College undertook an audit of the library's print book collection to determine if there were gaps in representation of the voices of authors of differing races/ethnicities; genders; or sexual orientations. With the results of this audit, Augustana College librarians now have a better understanding of which voices and perspectives are missing and/or underrepresented in the print collection. This article documents the audit methodology; shares the results; and provides suggestions and a toolkit for other libraries to use in audits of their own.

Did They Say What They Thought? Gender,Sound, and Oral History in a Wisconsin Women’s Radio Program

The physical remnants of long-lost radio programs are not the only sounds that broadcast historians must unearth to unravel the mysteries of radio production and reception. In this essay, I examine the audio tapes of a 1980 oral history interview of Isabel Baumann, a Wisconsin farm wife, rural activist, and radio personality who appeared for twenty years on a monthly local radio show called The We Say What We Think Club. I tell the story of how these recordings came to be archived at the State Historical Society of Wisconsin and the unique institutional context that preserved Baumann’s voice for future generations. The tapes of Baumann’s recollections of her farm life and radio career offer us not only one of the few examples of the sound of Baumann’s voice, but gives insight into how the very process of making oral histories helped her (and ultimately, us) understand the power of her radio work. Oral histories offer a space for women, so often marginalized in the industry and in historical narratives, to say what they think. Most importantly, the audio recovered from these academic projects allow historians to record with more fidelity what these women thought.     

Who goes to a library for cancer information in the e-health era? A secondary data analysis of the Health Information National Trends Survey (HINTS)

This study identifies characteristics of Americans who chose the library as their primary cancer information source over the Internet by examining demographic characteristics, online use experience, concerns of information quality, and perceptions of cancer information seeking. A secondary data analysis is conducted using the Health Information National Trends Survey (HINTS) of the National Cancer Institute (NCI). Findings reveal that people who are more likely to choose the library are, compared to their Internet counterparts, people who lack online experience, are distrustful of online cancer information, and are more aware of cancer sources. However, they are not necessarily more adept cancer information seekers and do not have a greater expectation of getting quality information from the library. These findings suggest how the library plays its role as an information source for cancer information consumers in the e-health environment. Implications of the findings are discussed in a way that libraries could invest their efforts to reduce the digital health divide and to advance consumer health information literacy.
