Catalogue Use in Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Library,Ogbomoso, Nigeria

This study examines use of the card catalogue by staff and undergraduate and postgraduate students of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, Oyo state, Nigeria. The population sample was comprised of 1,200 library users randomly selected from 13,592 registered library users at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso. Results from questionnaires established that the library card catalogue was underutilized by the undergraduate students (44%), but more heavily used by postgraduate students (78%), academic staff (74%), and administrative staff (66%). Recommendations are suggested to improve catalogue use in the library.     

Free Public Libraries Charging for Survival

This article is introduced with a brief account of the historical development of free public libraries in the United States. This is necessary to set the stage for sound reasoning for charging for products and services in today's vanishing public library systems. To be sure, these libraries are closing everywhere because of the lack of proper funding for survival, and charging a small fee has been debated continuously for the survival of these cultural, social, and informational centers. This is not only a problem throughout the United States but also globally. There are a few public libraries that are investigating this strategy to further serve library customers.

Mechanization of library procedures in the medium-sized medical library. 8. Suspension of computer atalog

A system for the substitution of a computer-printed book catalog for a card catalog was put to the test by making the former the sole means of locating material in the library, after four years of being used merely as an adjunct to the card catalog. It was found not suitable, and a new system is being devised in the light of the difficulties encountered. The reasons why the system broke down and the plans for the new one are described.     

Creating a Library Orientation Card Game to Reach New Transfer Students

Librarians and staff at a public university drew upon previous experience with instructional games to develop, implement, and assess a card game as a library orientation activity for new transfer students. This project was shaped by a desire to meet transfer students’ unique needs as well as the logistical constraints associated with the university’s transfer student orientation. The card game, modeled after Apples to Apples, presented information about the campus library system in a fun, informal way that allowed transfer students to socialize with each other while learning. Survey responses indicated that students found the game both enjoyable and helpful.

Examining Undergraduates' Library Priorities Through Q Methodology

This research study examined how undergraduates at the University of Mississippi prioritized current and prospective library services and spaces. Q methodology was used to identify and classify students' viewpoints through the statistical analysis of card sorting arrangements. Q method is unique in that it embraces both the subjectivity of an individual's perspective while also mathematically aligning that perspective with other similarly minded participants. Forty students were asked to rank-order a sixty-item card deck on a structured grid. These arrangements were then compared across participants to identify group patterns. Quantitative factor analysis revealed that students' perspectives clustered around four distinct points of views: the Environmentalists, the Space Advocates, the Ideological Traditionalists, and the Weekenders. Dimensions and characteristics of each factor are presented along with card rankings and excerpts from exemplar factor student interviews. High priority items where all factors converged—textbook checkout, a tutoring center, printing, and research assistance—are also discussed. Q methodology is proffered as an alternative to traditional library surveys in determining characteristics within one's user population. Recommendations for implementation of Q methodology results at our institution are considered as well as follow-up research initiatives.
