Patterns and trends of equity,diversity and inclusion programs in academic libraries

Equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) have been core values and top priorities for academic institutions in recent decades. This paper presents a review on EDI and their manifestations in strategic planning of academic libraries. Advocating and advancing EDI have been broadly recognized as initiatives that create partnership opportunities and have been supported by various library associations, such as the Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL), the American Library Association (ALA), and the Association of College & Research Libraries (ACRL) and Association of Research Libraries (ARL). The first section of this paper presents the initiatives and resources created by these library associations that provide example frameworks, roadmap, and planning for individual libraries to customize. The second section presents cases of EDI programs in the institutions that the author visited or studied for a professional development program in 2021–2022. The conclusion discusses recurring themes and initiatives. The findings outlined in this paper provide references, resources, and contexts for library leaders and the EDI team leaders to embark and sustain the critical journey of incorporating EDI values in their work and culture.     

EDI Overview (EDI: It's Not So Scary After All This Time)

The EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) Preconference was presented in six parts. It opened with a comprehensive overview of EDI, including its use within the library serials industry. The Pre-conference was well-attended, attracting 170 people, including librarians, vendors, automation system representatives, and publishers. Tina Feick delivered the first, keynote presentation and laid the groundwork for the five talks to follow.

The full economic benefit of EDI can only be realized with the use of EDI for the complete cycle of business transactions. Kansas State University Library, Endeavor Information Systems, and Harrassowitz are working in partnership to implement the full cycle of UN/EDIFACT transactions. In this workshop, speakers representing the partners in this project discussed the implementation process, including interface problems, workflow changes, critical elements, and other lessons learned in the process.     

Usage Factor for Journals: A New Measure for Scholarly Impact

This presentation described the history and ongoing development of EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) for libraries, agents, and publishers. The focus was on the newer international initiatives and developments, such as SUSHI (Standard Usage Statistical Harvesting Initiative), which can supply data directly to library Electronic Resource Management (ERM) systems. While the full promise of accurate machine-to-machine interchanges, which can enter data into our respective systems within seconds, is yet to be achieved, there is much work under way to develop and improve EDI protocols and standards.
