OneSearch in a Dental Library

MEDLINE, which includes the Index to Dental Literature, has been the database of choice for most search requests generated at Indiana University School of Dentistry. However, many requests extend beyond dentistry and the health sciences into the realms of business, education, psychology, law, and computer technology. For these requests, DIALOG'S new OneSearch feature can be a simple and cost-effective mechanism for supplementing - searches that would otherwise be confined to MEDLINE.

纸本馆藏图书目次信息著录分析

受制于MARC及其ISO2709元数据编码局限以及元数据制作成本和制作效率,图书馆馆藏元数据中,很多不具备图书的目次信息描述。在借助图形扫描设备和OCR识别技术、或手工录入等方式,将图书的目次信息数字化后,可以采用传统的MARC的856字段实现简单的目次图片文件的挂接,甚至可以扩展MARC字段或子字段,提供更多的目次信息表达;而利用新兴的DC元数据的原则和XML元数据编码,更能高效、低成本地实现图书书目著录对象与图书目次著录对象的清晰区分以及目次信息的层次表达。     

The Value of a Library Catalog for Selecting Children's Picture Books

The aim of this study was to determine how parents select picture books for their children and which bibliographic data are important as they choose between different versions of the same title. Thirty-six parents of preschool children aged one to six years were interviewed and observed as they chose one version of the picture book Cinderella from among six bibliographic records and then selected from among six physical versions. Parents described the criteria and the reasons for their selections. The results indicate that the parents experienced difficulties using the library catalog and that the current bibliographic elements are inadequate.

A library instruction program is a valuable service to dental students and other library users. This paper outlines the steps needed to implement an effective instruction program in a dental library. The successful library instruction program in place at the Indiana University School of Dentistry Library servces as a prototype.     

Extreme Makeover: Library Orientation for Postgraduate Dental Residents

Bibby Library at the University of Rochester provides a library orientation to new post-graduate dental students. The original class utilized a lecture format and included content that was no longer relevant. Students were bored and did not retain the information. This article describes the design and implementation of a new orientation class. The class includes a series of exercises designed to familiarize students with pertinent resources. Student response to the class and implications for the library are discussed.     

Document Delivery at a Veterinary Medical Library

The purpose of this study is to assess the use of document delivery services provided for primary clientele of the Veterinary Medical Library at Auburn University. This study describes and quantifies external library use patterns of the College of Veterinary Medicine faculty, staff and students, for a twelve-month period, though an analysis of the library's courier and interlibrary loan services. Three hypotheses are tested: (1) the majority of courier and interlibrary loan requests are for serials; (2) most serial requests are for nonveterinary journals; and (3) the demand for interlibrary loan and courier services follows a non-random pattern of distribution, i.e., the numbers of requests per month are unequal. The first two hypotheses are confirmed. Of the 2,376 requests for library materials external to VML, 2,197 (92%) are for serials; of the serials requests 1,608 (73%) are for nonveterinary journals. The third hypothesis is also confirmed. The chi square predicates a nonrandom distribution of requests by month. This study defines the nature of veterinary research as interdisciplinary. Findings identify collection weaknesses and requirements for new acquisitions.
