Barriers to Completing the Dissertation as Perceived by Education Leadership Doctoral Students

Prior research indicates that students perceive a number of barriers to completing their dissertations. In this qualitative study, six education leadership doctoral students were interviewed about barriers and enhancers to completing their coursework, comprehensive exams, and dissertation proposals. Five of the students were in a program specifically for community college leadership who had taken a dissertation development course for students struggling to complete the dissertation proposal. Findings indicated that students perceived a number of barriers including external obligations, difficulties with advising, and knowledge deficiencies.

Preparation,style, and format of doctoral dissertations in U.S. colleges and universities

While much criticism has been leveled at graduate education in major United States colleges and universities in the recent past, this study investigated the style and format variables related to preparation of the dissertation and associated matters. The results of this study indicate that a significant amount of introspective evaluation of the dissertation process and product has taken place over the last five years. Technological advances, quality concerns, and increased student involvement in the preparation process have been recognized and incorporated into new dissertation requirements, and a trend toward decentralized monitoring of dissertation preparation is evident from the results. Also presented are comparative information and data contrasting current practices with those reported in a 1975–76 survey of the same population. In both cases the response rate for the survey was greater than 85%, thus providing a very definitive picture of the current status of dissertation preparation.

Student autonomy and reflections on researching and writing the undergraduate dissertation

The dissertation is often promoted as a means of advancing autonomous learning. It is said to offer the potential for students to move along a continuum from dependence to independence. This research used interviews with a small sample of students to obtain a better understanding of the way students approach the dissertation process. The study found that the extent to which students operated autonomously depended upon a complex set of factors determining what Rokeach in 1973 refers to as their ‘competency values’. The study concluded that in order to obtain a better understanding of the values underpinning the behaviour of their students, dissertation tutors should be prepared to enter into a dialogue with them. This process would also involve encouraging students to critically reflect on how they planned to undertake the dissertation.

Mentoring and Student Support in Online Doctoral Programs

The increase in online graduate programs and the online mentoring of student research have led to the need to identify challenges faced by online mentees and successful strategies used by online mentors during the dissertation process. Based on semistructured interviews with ten graduates, strategies for online mentoring and areas of support valued by online doctoral students during the dissertation process are presented in this article.

英美高校地理学本科专业课程设置与教学特点

从2015年QS世界大学地理学专业排名前10的高校中选择了7所作为样本,通过各高校官网资料,从必修课、选修课、野外实习、毕业论文等环节的安排以及课程实施和评价等方面进行调研,收集了较全面的资料,分析了有关地理学本科课程设置、人才培养方面的规律和特点。结果表明:英美名校在地理学本科课程设置上强调学科基础面宽,地理特色的选修课灵活多样,教学形式多样、鼓励学生参与,课程考核评价方式综合,注重实践教学和本科生研究能力、综合素质的培养。我国高校在地理学专业课程建设中应当学习和借鉴。

衡量研究生培养质量重要标准的学位论文,其质量综合反映了培养单位研究生的科研能力和学术水平。本文以学术型硕士学位论文质量管理为研究对象,对影响学位论文质量的管理因素进行了分析,并对提高学位论文质量的管理对策进行了研究。主要对策为:加强学位论文选题、开题、中检、评审和答辩等过程管理;建立学位论文评审申诉机制;建立导师遴选与聘任制度;建立激励政策;推行弹性学制,建立软淘汰制。     

开放教育学生毕业论文质量提升的对策研究

毕业论文（设计）是完成高等教育的最后环节。毕业论文（设计）的撰写过程,在深化和升华这个教育层次所学知识的同时,还对学生的学习能力和专业技能进行了检测,优秀的毕业论文还是获得学士学位的必要条件。针对近年来开放教育毕业论文质量问题,本文采用了以调查问卷和访谈为基础的调查研究,总结并阐释了开放教育毕业生毕业论文撰写过程中存在的问题,分析了影响毕业论文质量的各种因素,构建了基于过程管理的毕业论文质量保障体系,同时,提出了具备操作意义的对策建议。     

Getting to the Point: Using Research Meetings and the Inverted Triangle Visual to Develop a Dissertation Research Question

This article contributes to the research training environment literature by presenting a method to guide the development of a dissertation research question. The method relies on 2 essential components: (a) informal doctoral student research team meetings to provide a mentoring environment in which conversation and discussion about dissertation questions takes place and (b) an inverted triangle visual to identify specific steps in the question‐development process. The first author's experience and that of 3 other participants with this method are chronicled to illustrate its efficacy.     

Supervising a social science undergraduate dissertation: staff experiences and perceptions

This article reports on a research project that investigated the experiences and perceptions of staff supervising final year social science undergraduates enrolled on a dissertation module in a post-1992 UK university. Using data from semi-structured interviews, the article explores staffs perspectives of the supervision process, the different approaches taken by staff to supervision and the challenges they face in supporting students through the dissertation journey. The paper offers a picture of the dissertation supervisors’ experiences and, it is hoped, will encourage other supervisors to interrogate their own supervision in light of the practice of colleagues.     

Using dissertation projects to facilitate transitions to university and employment: an exploratory case study

The transition between school or college and higher education can be a challenging time for a student. Schools, colleges and universities work together in a number of ways in order to try and ease this process. However, many students still find their first-year experience difficult to adjust to, which can impact on their own development and achievement. This article documents critical reflections on a case study of a teaching, learning and research partnership currently being undertaken between a secondary school where students are taught AS and A Level psychology and a department of psychology in a post-1992 university in England. Drawing upon a social constructivist framework together with Healey’s model of the link between research and teaching, the aims of this study were to explore how undergraduate dissertation students can work with AS and A Level students on their dissertation projects. The study showed that the AS and A Level students found it an enjoyable practical experience, which they felt enhanced their understanding of university studies. The dissertation students found that the experience might be useful for postgraduate studies and future employment. This article highlights the benefits of the process but also the challenges for those involved, particularly if it was to be conducted on a larger scale.

The “All-But-the-Dissertation” Student and the Psychology of the Doctoral Dissertation

Completion of the dissertation is an important milestone and often a major obstacle for PhD candidates, some of whom become and remain all-but-the-dissertation students. All-but-the-dissertation students usually disappoint both themselves and their departments. Thus it is important to understand the psychology of the dissertation. A review of doctoral dissertations on the topic of dissertation completion is followed by a discussion of developmental conflicts that frequently influence dissertation difficulties and then a presentation of the dynamic psychotherapy of a patient struggling to complete a dissertation. Problems in both external reality and internal fantasy are noted. The importance of understanding specific developmental conflicts and individual dynamics in treatment of this population is emphasized.
