先说地名。如：NewYork，在英国原来就有一个York镇的地方，美国也建一个，为了区别，才加上一个New；华盛顿Washington原来是早先华人到美国后，就最先到达这个地方，他们又没有什么专门技术，就只好给人家洗衣服，洗衣服的一多，就有了个washing（洗衣服）ton（镇）名字。洛杉矶Losangeles是指丢失（loseorlost）天使（angel）的地方，说明过去这里曾经有过不少的天使，这名字多富于诗意呀；落基山脉Rockies是指那个落基山就是石头（rock）山的意思；波士顿Boston是那是一个到处是老板（boss）的地方；佛吉尼亚Vir－ginia是指一个像处…
