Previous inquiries into the relationship between education and housework productivity reveal that expectations differ along disciplinary (i.e., economics vs. non-economics) lines and empirical results from the economics literature are mixed. Expectations of a positive sign between education and housework productivity in the economics literature may be a function of misinterpretations of [J. Polit. Economy 81 (1973) 306] original theory pertaining to all non-market production, which is far more general than just housework. Mixed empirical results may be a function of incomplete or overly assumption-reliant econometric models derived previously. We streamline the procedures for estimating the parameters of a one-person, one-period housework production function such that the system of equations may be specified with a single, literature-based assumption. Our estimation of the production function parameter that measures the effect of education on housework productivity suggests that authors in the non-economics literature may have a point; the relationship between education and housework productivity may be negative due to “morale” effects.  相似文献

This paper considers the relation of education and of scientific and technical knowledge developed through R&D to labor productivity growth within the medium term. It is unique in using a total capital approach that includes both private and public physical, human, and knowledge capital formation and in use of a medium term model for determining productivity growth that includes both demand side and supply side effects. Empirical results for the U.S. and 14 other major OECD nations for 5-yr time periods from 1955 through 1980 find education as measured both by the average educational attainment of the labor force and by the percentage of advanced level graduates who bring technology to bear on production to be significant determinants of productivity growth. Gross investment in physical capital also transmits the R&D and has a positive influence, as do higher utilization rates and the technology transfer associated with lower initial productivity levels.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This paper uses Basil Bernstein’s work on pedagogic discourses to examine a largely neglected facet of the history of vocational education – the liberal studies movement in English further education colleges. Initially, the paper discusses some of the competing conceptions of education, work and society which underpinned the rise and fall of the liberal studies movement – if indeed it can be described as such. The paper then draws on data from interviews with former liberal and general studies lecturers to focus on the ways in which different variants of liberal studies were, over time, implicated in inculcating certain forms of knowledge in vocational learners. Whilst it is acknowledged that liberal and general studies always represented contested territory and that it was highly variable both in terms of content and quality, the paper argues that, at least under certain circumstances, liberal studies provided young working-class people with the opportunity to locate their experiences of vocational learning within a critical framework that is largely absent from further education today. This, it is argued, can be conceptualised as an engagement with what Bernstein described as ‘powerful knowledge’.  相似文献

This study investigates technical efficiency and productivity for Swedish higher education institutions (HEIs). One identified problem in previous research concerns adjusting efficiency scores for input quality. This problem is avoided using grades from upper-secondary schools. A second problem concerns heterogeneity with respect to subjects and institutions between HEIs. Using the Swedish national resource allocation system, students are weighted according to subject. For research production, a bibliometric index that allows for differences in publication tradition is used. A third problem when using the data envelopment analysis approach is the lack of statistical inference. Bootstrapping is used to approach this problem. The results indicate an average inefficiency of 12% and a productivity increase of around 1.7% per year.  相似文献

This theoretical paper examines some of the potential impacts of different modes of university organization in Turkey (Faculty and Departmental) upon the scientific productivity of faculty members. A model of university organization is developed which distinguishes between the administrative and academic structures within the university. This model, derived largely from the literature on bureaucratic and professional organizations, provides the basis for a comparative analysis of the structural differences between the Faculty and Departmental mode of university organization in Turkey. Exploration of these structural differences leads to the hypothesis that the organizational structure of the Departmental university, in the Turkish setting, is more functional, on net balance, than the Faculty mode of university organization for the development of high levels of faculty productivity in the fields of science. Examination of some very limited data on the scientific activities of Turkish scientists in a sample of Turkish universities, though by no means conclusive, suggests that, within given social situations, this hypothesis may indeed be correct. Nevertheless, it is clear that there exists a need not only for more extensive research in this area, but also for more detailed information as to the social, political, and economic situations within which university organizations exist.

While there is strong interest in teaching values in Australia and internationally there is little focus on young children’s moral values learning in the classroom. Research shows that personal epistemology influences teaching and learning in a range of education contexts, including moral education. This study examines relationships between personal epistemologies (children’s and teachers’), pedagogies, and school contexts for moral learning in two early years classrooms. Interviews with teachers and children and analysis of school policy revealed patterns of relationships between personal epistemologies and pedagogies within each school. A whole-school approach to understanding personal epistemologies and practice for moral values learning is suggested.  相似文献
