Games to Improve Students Information Literacy Skills

Abstract

As digital natives enter higher education, there is the need to improve their information skills but they often overestimate their information research skills and are unfamiliar with the library. The serious games give the opportunity for innovative and engaging approaches to information literacy learning. The paper describes NAVIGATE - Information Literacy: a Game-based Learning Approach for Avoiding Fake Content, a project funded by Erasmus?+?program. The Project aims to improve the competences to avoid fake content of the higher education students in the Humanities. The paper focuses on the comparative analysis of the students’ skills gap and the difficulty of actually assessing the learning improvement achieved by games, highlighting the lessons learned and the open issues.

Faculty Perceptions of Digital Information Literacy (DIL) at an Indian University: An Exploratory Study

The purpose of this study is to explore and investigate the perception of faculty on Digital Information Literacy (DIL) and their skills and competencies in using digital information in an Indian University. In this study, special focus has been on Sambalpur University (SU) in the state of Odisha. Furthermore, this study has enlightened various types of DIL skills and competencies required for faculty members of Information Communication Technology, constraints affecting related skills, competencies, and suggested suitable measures to meet challenges in University libraries. The study has provided direction for information professionals to meet the challenges and demands of the information requirements of faculty members from the University by adopting innovative solutions through evidence-based practices.     

Perceptions of Information Literacy Skills among Undergraduate Students in the Social Media Environment

This study assessed information literacy perceptions of undergraduate students at Sultan Qaboos University in their use of social media. A quantitative approach was used to collect data from undergraduate students. The study consisted of 1,142 completed questionnaires by randomly selected participants. The results demonstrated overall moderate levels of perceptions toward the evaluation of information, information ethics, legal issues, and privacy issues. In evaluation of information, credibility of information was considered as an important factor to decide whether to use information for academic purposes. This study signifies the importance of understanding perceptions of information literacy among undergraduate students in a specific socio-cultural context. The results can also be generalized to similar academic institutions worldwide. It is also hoped that the study's findings will assist in developing contextual training programs or information literacy quizzes to promote information literacy in the social media environment.     

Teaching Information Literacy to Faculty: An Experiment

Faculty at Southeastern University were required to take an information literacy course designed by the librarians. The author then interviewed faculty regarding their attitudes toward the course and information literacy. Librarians were especially interested in whether taking this course would change the faculty's approach to teaching information literacy in the classroom. Librarians evaluated the course and recommended future changes based on the results of these interviews.     

Library-Led Faculty Workshops: Helping Distance Educators Meet Information Literacy Goals in the Online Classroom

ABSTRACT

At University of Maryland University College (UMUC), librarians have designed and led a number of multiday, asynchronous online workshops for faculty. The workshops teach faculty how to meet information literacy goals in the virtual classroom. Through hands-on activities and discussion among their colleagues, participants in the faculty workshops learn about the university's information literacy standards, library resources and services, free Web tools, and how best to design class assignments involving library research. Library-led faculty workshops at UMUC have increased library visibility and furthered collaboration between faculty and librarians. This article discusses 5 workshops, detailing workshop content and logistics and demonstrating how librarians can help distance faculty further information literacy goals for students.     

Collaboration and Information Literacy

Abstract

The National University Library Information Literacy Plan has been in place since 1999. Following a slow start, information literacy has begun to be accepted throughout the University. Faculty collaboration, dogged determination of librarians, and impressive assessment results have helped pave the way for this program. In this paper, a program overview will be briefly discussed followed by the National University LIC Librarians (virtual librarians at the regional learning centers) discussing faculty collaboration efforts, a University core curriculum class on information literacy, and information literacy assessment.

Disconnect: Contradictions and Disagreements in Faculty Perspectives of Information Literacy

Broward College, an early adopter of Guided Pathways, has made efforts to incorporate information literacy throughout the curriculum by embedding librarians in pathways and through General Education learning outcomes. However, although college administrators and faculty acknowledge that the integration of information literacy instruction throughout the curriculum is crucial to student success, librarians have struggled to become true teaching partners. A survey was administered to discipline faculty to determine attitudes, perceptions, and a self-assessment of information literacy. This study includes a nuanced analysis of discipline faculty responses and reveals conflicting attitudes and behaviors related to information literacy instruction.     

Assessment and Perception of Information Literacy Skills Among Teacher Education Students

This study aims to assess the information literacy skills of a sample of undergraduate teacher education students and explore their perceptions about those skills. Participants completed iSkills, an online assessment from the Educational Testing Service aligned with the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) Standards, and a subsample participated in focus-group discussions regarding their test experience and perceptions of information literacy. This article focuses on the qualitative findings from these discussions. Participants were unfamiliar with the term “information literacy” but see it as essential to their success and that of their future students, especially in the context of a diverse, urban school district.

Summary

With the rapid advances in information technology, the proliferation of information resources and formats, and the increasing complexities of access and evaluation, libraries recognize the necessity for a dynamic information literacy program that will address the needs of all categories of users. University faculty constitute one group of users to which the systemic college library increasingly endeavors to extend and market its services and programs, including its information literacy training workshops. A consideration of this library/classroom faculty relationship in the context of the adult education literature, as well as successful models that have been employed in this effort, provide insight on ways in which the library can successfully accomplish its information literacy training objectives among this group.

文章针对我国国内艺术类专业信息素质教育评价标准缺乏的问题,对澳大利亚墨尔本大学艺术类信息素质能力指标体系的基本概况和基本框架结构进行介绍,并从与通用层次信息素质能力指标体系的一致性、学科特色、本校特色、多层次评价标准四方面分析其基本特点,最后对该体系对我国艺术类高校开展信息素质教育的借鉴意义进行了讨论。     

从普适技能到嵌入实践——国外信息素养理论与实践回顾

20世纪70年代,在信息技术迅速发展和信息资源日益重要的背景下,信息素养概念产生。随后,美国图书馆界率先将书目指导业务转型为信息素养教育,信息素养也成为图书馆情报学的重要研究领域。本文主要依据国外信息素养领域文献及其他相关文献,对信息素养概念、理论、实践的演进进行了比较全面的分析和总结,旨在为国内同仁从全局角度理解国外信息素养领域的各种变化,提供线索和洞见。研究发现:国外信息素养领域对早期信息素养概念进行了四种不同性质的修正及两次颠覆性改变,引进和发展了多种相关理论,包括各种流派的建构主义学习理论、各种批判理论和实践理论,实施了不同路径的信息素养教育实践;这些相互影响的发展变化导致了三种信息素养范式的出现:普适技能范式、情境化能力范式和嵌入实践范式。通过对已有范式的反思,本文提出未来信息素养研究和实践应将培养持久的信息获取利用习惯纳入考量范围。     

十年来我国信息素养研究述评——对信息素养研究论文的计量分析

采用文献计量学方法,从信息素养定义与内涵、信息素养评价标准和实践、信息素养与文献信息机构的关系、信息素养与图书情报领域热点问题的相关性研究4个方面对十年间信息素养研究论文进行全面分析,并在此基础上,指出今后信息素养研究的重点及应注意的问题。     

同伴教育:研究生信息素质教育的创新实践探索

[目的/意义]针对高校图书馆研究生信息素质教育师资不足的现状，探索如何利用同伴教育模式开展图书馆研究生信息素质教育。[方法/过程]以华南农业大学图书馆的实践为例，探讨同伴教育队伍的构建机制，探索开展信息素质教育的实践模式和效果。[结果/结论]研究生以同伴身份，通过"微课堂"同伴培训、"专题课堂"同伴助教、"微课程"同伴创作等方式来协助图书馆开展研究生信息素质教育，减轻图书馆因师资不足带来的教学压力，为同类图书馆扩大研究生信息素质教育规模、提高教育的个性化和专业化提供新思路。
