Nonlinear dynamic analysis of the whole vehicle on bumpy road

Through the research into the characteristics of 7-DoF high dimensional nonlinear dynamics of a vehicle on bumpy road, the periodic movement and chaotic behavior of the vehicle were found.The methods of nonlinear frequency response analysis, global bifurcation, frequency chart and Poincaré maps were used simultaneously to derive strange super chaotic attractor.According to Lyapunov exponents calculated by Gram-Schmidt method, the unstable region was compartmentalized and the super chaotic characteristic of the nonlinear system was verified.Numerical results by 4-order Runge-Kutta method presented the multiform dynamic behavior of the system.

The long and winding road: A grounded theory of reminiscence among Filipino residents in nursing homes

Although reminiscence is a naturally occurring process in late adulthood, not all older adults reminisce effectively. Notably, feelings of guilt, loneliness, bitterness and regret lead to despair and remorse rather than integrity. In spite of this, little is known about the process of reminiscence among Filipino older adults. This grounded study aims to develop a model that describes how a select group of older Filipino patients residing in nursing homes in the Philippines experience reminiscence.

Strauss and Corbin’s (1990) grounded theory design was employed in this study. A total of eighteen (18) Filipino older adults in nursing homes were purposively selected to participate in one-on-one, semi-structured interviews. These were then transcribed into field texts and analyzed through open, axial and selective coding. Member checking procedure was employed to ensure that the emerged themes were sensible and consistent with the participants’ lived experiences.

Through constant comparative method, the findings of this study presented the development of a three-phase process (Reactivating, Reconstructing and Reframing) that describes the reminiscence experiences of a select group of Filipino nursing home residents. The emergent theoretical model invites nurses as quality care providers to renew and restructure interventions to promote effective reminiscence.     

The Responsible Anarchist: Postmodernism and social change

In recent years, the adoption of postmodern theoretical perspectives within educational research has prompted strong critical reaction. For some critics (particularly Marxist researchers), the greatest fault of postmodernism is that it lacks an agenda for social change. This paper takes issue with this argument, and with four associated arguments: (1) that postmodernism disempowers those to whom it claims to give voice; (2) that it appeals only to intellectuals and has no practical value; (3) that it denies the possibility of the construction of a new social order; and (4) that it colludes with the status quo in its refusal to act. Addressing each of these points in turn, the author suggests that, contrary to the view of these critics, postmodernism offers a powerful force for social change, through the acceptance of uncertainty, the acknowledgement of diversity and the refusal to see concepts such as 'justice' or 'society' as fixed, or as governed by unassailable 'truths'.     

First things first: anger management group work in a mainstream high school setting

In an attempt to support the emotional development and behavioural choices of young students in grades 7–10, a six session therapeutic group programme was devised – culminating in a written manual to enable future replication of the programme. This pilot programme was introduced as a once-weekly, morning session aimed at prioritising a student’s need for emotional regulation in an attempt to support academic learning outcomes. Specifically, the group programme provided a five-stage understanding of the cycle of anger, with an additional session allocated for case studies and review. This article seeks to describe the pilot intervention – specifically the therapeutic content – such that it can be replicated elsewhere. Informed by cognitive behavioural therapy, attachment theory and systems theory, the programme sought to respond to the similar needs of multiple students within a time efficient and age-appropriate format.

Effective faculty feedback: The road less traveled

Grading papers may be one of the most stressful, most time consuming, and least rewarding activities in which professors engage. Although effective grading techniques for papers have been widely researched, especially within the “Writing” or “English” scholarly arenas, has this information been put into practice? The goals of this paper are two-fold: (1) to replicate and extend Connor and Lunsford's [Connors, R. J., & Lunsford, A. A. (1993). Teachers’ rhetorical comments on student papers. College Composition and Communication, 44, 200–223] analysis of faculty comments, and (2) to review some of the tips for effective grading practices and see if the comments reflected these effective practice advice. A content analysis was conducted on faculty comments from 598 graded papers written for hundreds of courses from 30 different departments in the university. Results indicate that most comments were technical corrections that addressed spelling, grammar, word choice, and missing words. Macro- and mid-level comments that addressed paper organization and quality of the ideas contained in it were surprisingly absent. The lack of these larger idea and argument centered comments may prevent students from improving the quality of the larger issues in writing and refocus them on the smaller, albeit important, technical issues of writing.
