In this study it was planned to investigate the effect of oxidized phosphatidylcholine (derived from egg) feeding on lipid
peroxidation of different tissues in rats. Male Wistar albino rats were fed oxidized and unoxidized phosphatidylcholine for
2 and 4 weeks, respectively. During the period of study food intake and body weights of animals increased gradually. Animals
fed oxidized phosphatidylcholine for 2 and 4 weeks showed 33 and 15% spontaneous hemolysis of red blood cells in vitro. Under
identical experimental conditions animals given unoxidized phosphatidylcholine showed 14.5 and 13.4% hemolysis for 2 and 4
week’s period, respectively. Thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) level in thymus, spleen, kidney, heart, liver
and lung significantly increased in rats given oxidized phosphatidylcholine as compared to unoxidized group. Furthermore,
in oxidized phosphatidylcholine group TBARS values in kidney, liver and lungs continued to rise for 4 weeks of treatment while
TBARS level in heart, spleen and thymus was found to be decreased at the end of 4 weeks of oxidized phosphatidylcholine feeding.
Plasma triacylglycerol and cholesterol was found to increase in rats who had received oxidized phosphatidylcholine for 2 weeks.
These findings suggest that excess and persistent intake of oxidized phosphatidylcholine can cause significant damage to organs. 相似文献

The study was designed to evaluate the hepatoprotective activity of ethanolic extract of Bacopa monnieri in acute experimental liver injury induced by Nitrobenzene in rats. The extract at the dose of 200 mg/kg body weight was
administered orally once every day for 10 days. The increased serum marker enzymes, Aspartate transaminase, Alanine transaminase
and alkaline phosphatase were restored towards normalization significantly by the extract. Significant increase in SOD, CAT
and GPx was observed in extract treated liver injured experimental rats. Histopathological examination of the liver tissues
supported the hepatoprotection. It is concluded that the ethanolic extract of Bacopa monieri plant possess good hepatoprotective activity. 相似文献

Stress is one of the basic factors in the aetiology of a number of diseases such as atherosclerosis, coronary heart disease,
aging, liver disease etc. Hence this work was designed to study the effect of stress in the form of forced immobilisation
stress on lipid peroxidation and lipid profile in rabbits. The study was conducted in 25 healthy rabbits of either sex. Rabbits
were subjected to forced immobilisation for two hours everyday for consecutive seven days. Blood samples were collected on
day 1, 3 and 7 after immobilisation period. Malondialdehyde (MDA), a marker of lipid peroxidation was estimated by TBA assay
method. Lipid profile was analysed by multichannel autoanalyser. There was statistically significant increase in MDA, total
cholesterol, LDL, VLDL and triglycerides with immobilisation. These findings indicate that stress in the form of forced immobilisation
increases lipid peroxidation and alter lipid profile, which may be responsible for pathophysiology of various diseases. 相似文献

Osteoporosis encompasses a wide spectrum of conditions associated with imbalance of osteoclastic and osteoblastic activities.
The increased activity of osteoclasts leads to increased free radical formation and hence lipid peroxidation. Present study
probes into the role of antioxidants as a palliative treatment for osteoporosis. It involved 50 healthy controls and 75 clinically
diagnosed osteoporosis patients. Both the groups underwent baseline assessment of biochemical markers viz. osteoblastic markers:
serum Alkaline phosphatase. Free or ionic calcium and Inorganic phosphorus, osteoclastic markers: serum Tartarate resistant
acid phosphatase and Malondialdehyde and the antioxidant status: serum Superoxide dismutase and Erythrocyte reduced glutathione.
The osteoporotic group was then divided into groups A (Vitamin E-Evinal 400 mg), B (Vitamin C-Celin 500 mg), C (Vitamin E+C-Evinal+Celin)
for antioxidant supplementation for a period of 90 days. The results reveal that there is significant fall in concentration
of serum MDA (p<0.001), TrACP (p<0.01). Improvement in antioxidant status is reflected by significant rise in concentration
of serum SOD (p<0.001) and erythrocyte GSH (p<0.001) after 90 days of antioxidant supplementation in osteoporosis. The findings
indicate that on the whole bone status improved with prolonged antioxidant vitamin supplementation, which can be used as a
palliative treatment for osteoporosis. The efficacy is not affected whether the vitamins are administered singly or conjointly. 相似文献

Coronary Artery Disease is the major cause of mortality and morbidity worldwide. Traditional risk factors account for only
half of the morbidity and mortality from coronary artery disease. There is substantial evidence that oxidative stress plays
the major role in the atherosclerotic process. The present study was undertaken to evaluate the level of lipid peroxidation
(by measuring malondialdehyde) and antioxidant enzymes (ceruloplasmin, glutathione, superoxide dismutase) in coronary artery
disease. Serum malondialdehyde levels and serum ceruloplasmin levels were significantly raised in all the subgroups of study
group as compared to control group (p<0.001). Whole blood glutathione levels and hemolysate superoxide dismutase activity
was significantly decreased in all the subgroups of study group as compared to control group (p<0.001). Above results suggests
that the patients of coronary artery disease show increased oxidative stress and decreased levels of antioxidant enzymes.
So it is recommended that the management protocol for coronary artery disease patients should include antioxidant supplementation
along with simultaneous lowering of lipid peroxidation. 相似文献

Preeclampsia is a multisystem disorder associated with maternal hypertension, placental abnormalities and adverse fetal outcomes. The various pathways involved in its etiology include endothelial dysfunction, inflammatory milieu, lipid peroxidation and immunological imbalance. The present study was conducted to evaluate the causative and predictive role of nitric oxide, lipid peroxidation end products (MDA) and inflammatory cytokines (IL-6, TNF-α) in clinical presentation, severity and fetal outcome in preeclampsia. The study population was divided into 3 groups- Non- pregnant females comprising the control population; G1 and G2 groups included normal pregnant and pregnant females with preeclampsia with 50 patients in each group. Nitric Oxide and MDA levels were found to be highest in the preeclamptic patients as compared to other two groups. ROC curve analysis shows the superiority of the inflammatory markers as determinants of severity of preeclampsia which suggests the emerging role of pro inflammatory markers in the various pathological changes in preeclampsia. TNF-α emerged as the best marker in multivariate analysis and thus, has the potential for being used as a marker for PIH. Our study illustrates the multifactorial etiology of preeclampsia involving oxidative stress, proinflammatory milieu and endothelial dysfunction. 相似文献

In view of sufficient body of evidence to substantiate the role of free radical mediated oxidative injury in myocardial infarction
(M.I.), the utility of exogenous supplementation with antioxidant substance, vitamin E was studied. Forty patients of acute
myocardial infarction were divided into two equal groups, one who received vitamin E and the other who did not. Plasma MDA
levels showed a reduction in patients of M.I. who received vitamin E as well as in those who did not, however, the decrease

Pregnancy is a physiological state accompanied by a high-energy demand and an increased oxygen requirement. Augmented levels
of oxidative stress would be expected because of the increased intake and utilization of oxygen. Evidence of increased oxidative
stress in normal pregnancy in comparison with nonpregnant controls was estimated by measuring Thiobarbituric acid reactive
substance (TBARS), enzymatic antioxidants like Superoxide dismutase, Glutathione peroxidase, Glutathione reductase and catalase.
It was observed that pregnant women were more susceptible to oxidative damage than non-pregnants as indicated by increased

BackgroundDiabetes is a metabolic disorder caused by defects in insulin production and activity. During disease progression, changes in lipid peroxidation cause structural modifications via production of free radicals. Fangchinoline is a well-known alkaloid present in Stephaniae tetrandrine S. Moore, which has demonstrated antioxidant, anticancer, and anti-inflammatory activities.ResultsThe present study analyzed the anti-diabetic and antioxidant effects of fangchinoline in male rats with streptozotocin-induced diabetes. Rats were divided into the following groups: normal control, diabetic, diabetic + fangchinoline 100 mg/kg, diabetic + fangchinoline 200 mg/kg and diabetic + glibenclamide 600 µg/kg. The treatment was administered orally for 45 consecutive days. Lipid peroxidation was substantially increased by >50% in the serum, as well as the liver, kidney, and heart tissues of diabetic rats. However, fangchinoline supplementation significantly reduced lipid peroxidation to near normal levels. Reactive oxygen species levels were substantially increased by >500% in the serum, as well as the liver, kidney, and heart tissues of diabetic rats. Fangchinoline supplementation reduced reactive oxygen species to near normal levels. Fangchinoline supplementation significantly improved superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, catalase, and reduced glutathione levels in diabetic rats. Total hexoses, sialic acid, hexosamines, and fucose were increased in diabetic rats, whereas fangchinoline supplementation significantly reduced these total hexoses, sialic acid, hexosamines, and fucose to near normal levelsConclusionsSupplementation with fangchinoline led to significant attenuation of the levels of lipid peroxidation, ROS, and glycoprotein components such as total hexoses, hexosamines, sialic acid, and fucose, while improving antioxidant marker levels.How to cite: Xia J, Huang W, Zhou F. The objective of the present study was to evaluate hypolipidemic effect of methanolic extract of Celastrus paniculatus in experimentally induced hypercholesterolemic rats. Hypercholesterolemia was induced by feeding the animals with high fat
diet. Oral administration of methanolic seed extract (50%) of Celastrus paniculatus at the optimized dose of 65 mg/kg body weight, substantially reduced the plasma total cholesterol, triglycerides and LDL
cholesterol in comparison with induced hypercholesterolemic animal group and the results were comparable with the standard
hypocholesterolemic drug and almost similar to the control group. Atherogenic index and liver weight of treated animals also
showed significant decrease compared to the hypercholesterolemic animals. It substantially increased the HDL cholesterol level
as compared to control group. A significant increase in the activities of lipoprotein lipase and plasma LCAT enhanced hepatic
bile acid synthesis and thereby, increased degradation of cholesterol to neutral sterols. Furthermore, the activities of HMG-CoA
reductase, glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase and malate dehydrogenase were significantly reduced. Histological studies showed
less cholesterol deposits in the aorta of animals fed with seed extract of C. paniculatus compared to the induced hypercholesterolemic animals not given C. paniculatus supplement. 相似文献

The antidyslipidemic activity of Hibiscus rosa sinensis (Malvaceae) root extract has been studied in alloxan induced diabetic rats. In this model, oral administration of root extract (500 mg/kg bw. p.o.) for 15 days resulted in significant decreased in the levels of blood glucose, plasma lipids and reactivated post heparin lipoprotein lipase activity in alloxan induced diabetic rats. Furthermore, the root extract (50–500 μg) when tested for its antioxidant activity, inhibited the generation of super oxide anions and hydroxyl radicals, in both enzymic and non enzymic systems in vitro. The results of the present study demonstrated antidyslipidemic and antioxidant activities in root extract of H. rosa sinensis which could be used in prevention of diabetic-dyslipidemia and related complications. 相似文献

Platelets play important role in precipitating ischaemic myocardial syndromes in many ways. One of the consequences of ischaemic
diseases is excessive generation of oxygen derived free radicals that have numerous pathophysiological consequences. Platelet
pro-oxidant enzyme, xanthine oxidase is one of the sources of generation of free radicals. In the present paper, we report
the effect of administration of vitamin E along with aspirin on the levels of platelet xanthine oxidase and extent of free
radical mediated damage in the patients reperfused after myocardial infarction.
Our findings show that administration of 400 mg. vitamin E for six days along with 80 mg. aspirin has an excellent anti-oxidant
effect as evidenced by reduced platelet xanthine oxidase activity and lowering of malondialdehdye (MDA) levels which is an

This study was undertaken to determine the association of inflammatory biomarker, oxidative stress and antioxidant capacity marker with fetal haemoglobin (HbF) level among sickle cell trait and sickle cell disease (SCD) patients in Chattisgarh. The study group consisted of 51 SCD (SS) patients with painful episode, 49 SCD (SS) patients with steady state, 50 sickle cell trait (AS) and 50 controls. Malondialdehyde (MDA), CRP, total antioxidant power (FARP), total thiol and HbF levels were quantified. We found a significant positive (p < 0.0001) association between CRP and MDA levels and its inverse association with HbF level in SS patients. We also observed that antioxidant capacity had significantly positively (p < 0.0001) associated with HbF level. The protective effect of HbF was found, because the increase in HbF levels resulted in decrease in lipid peroxidation and inflammation in SCD patients. A decrease in the HbF level and its antioxidant capacity has been associated with the pathogenesis of SCD. These finding may explain the high level of HbF is ameliorating oxidative stress and inflammation in SCD patients. 相似文献

High blood glucose level, elevated level of liver enzyme, necrosis and shrinkage of islets of Langerhans has been implicated in the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes. High blood glucose cause oxidative stress, production of free radical as well as elevated SGPT and SGOT level. Both glibenclamide and simvastatin in fixed dose used as antihyperglycemic antidyslipidemic and antioxidative agents for type 2 diabetes treatment. This study therefore aimed to evaluate the antihyperglycemic, antidyslipidemic and antioxidative effect of fixed dose combination of glibenclamide (0.6 mg/70 kg body weight) and simvastatin (5 mg/70 kg body weight) on long term alloxan induced diabetic rats with cardiovascular disease using various diagnostic kits as a parameter of phamacotherapeutic and pharmacological effect. The study was carried out using 96 Swiss Albino male rats weighing about 200–220 g. Combination therapy induced a significant decrease in blood glucose level in alloxan induced diabetic rats, from 33.75 ± 1.65 to 5.80 ± 0.07 mmol/l 2 h after last dose administration, after 4 weeks treatment. In case of dyslipidemic effect, combination therapy reduced total cholesterol (45 %), triglyceride (36 %) and low density lipoprotein-cholesterol (32 %) levels significantly and increased high density lipoprotein-cholesterol level (57 %) in comparison with their respective diabetic control groups. Results of this study showed that combination therapy effectively decreased SGPT (ALAT) (55 %) and SGOT (ASAT) (51 %) in comparison with diabetic control group. It was also observed that catalase and superoxide dismutase enzyme activity was increased by 58 and 91 % respectively in comparison with diabetic control group after 4 weeks treatment with combination of both drugs. In conclusion, these findings of combination therapy (glibenclamide and simvastatin) on alloxan induced diabetes in rats are significantly better than monotherapy using single drug. The results of the present study suggest that, combination of the fixed dose of glibenclamide and simvastatin might be efficacious in patients with diabetic dyslipidemia and increased oxidative stress. Furthermore, this combination therapy offer dosage convenience to the patients and by virtue of its dual mode of action might be a useful addition to the therapeutic armamentarium for patients with diabetic dyslipidemia and oxidative stress. 相似文献

Glyco-oxidation is considered as a source of permanent, cumulative, oxidative damage to long lived proteins in ageing and
in diabetes. Although RBC depends solely on glucose for energy purpose, hyperglycemic state glycosylates hemoglobin, creates
oxidative stress and puts the cellular components at risk. In view of this, RBC membrane composition was analyzed in diabetic
patients. The results were compared with healthy age and sex matched control groups. When RBC membrane components such as
protein, sialic acid, phospholipids and cholesterol were determined in insulin dependent diabetes mellitus, a significant
rise in phospholipids and cholesterol and significant fall in sialic acid and protein content was noted. RBC membrane composition
showed pronounced alterations in insulin dependent diabetes mellitus. These changes were accompanied by higher levels of lipid
peroxidation products like Malondialdehyde. 相似文献
