Putting writing into perspective: Cultivating empathy through high-intensity writing practice

Abstract

The present study examined whether and to what degree empathy increased in adolescents who participated in a high-intensity writing program over the course of a year. Data for this study came from writing samples of a randomly selected group of middle-grade students (n?=?61) collected at three different time points to answer whether: 1) it was possible to reliably and systematically measure empathy as a complex construct that included both affective and cognitive elements, and 2) empathy increased over one year in an intensive writing practice program. The findings showed statistically significant increases in various aspects of empathy such as reasoning, including multiple perspectives, expressing emotion, and proposals for action, and statistically significant increases in empathy as a latent construct. The high-intensity writing program, an essential component of the school’s curriculum, served as an educational tool and provided a showcase for the role of deliberate practice in skill building.

为贯彻《中共中央国务院关于进一步加强和改进大学生思想政治教育的意见》,按照提供服务是新时期加强和改进思想政治工作的重要思路和有效方法,针对当前大学生中存在经济困难、学习困难、心理困惑和就业困难的“四难”问题,西北农林科技大学大力实施了“四个服务”工程,即:以经济资助服务为基础,建立困难学生资助体系;以学习帮助服务为根本,加强学习困难学生帮助指导工作;以心理咨询服务为保证,加强心理健康教育和咨询工作;以就业指导服务为关键,加强毕业生就业指导和促进就业措施。通过“四个服务”工程,增强了思想政治工作的吸引力和有效性,促进了大学生的健康成长。

Putting persons back into education

Both the language of performance management and the target-setting culture of our schools lead to a ‘depersonalisation’ of education—a failure to respect young learners as persons. They become a ‘means’ to some further non-educational ‘end’. John Macmurray challenged this depersonalisation in terms not only of its impoverished educational consequences but also of a fundamental philosophical error in giving primacy to persons as ‘thinkers’ rather than to them as ‘doers’. Not ‘I think, therefore I am’, but ‘I do, therefore I am’.     

Deterritorializations: Putting postmodernism to work on teacher education and inclusion

This paper presents an overview of the elements which characterize a research attitude and approach introduced by Michel Foucault and further developed as ‘studies of governmentality’ into a sub‐discipline of the humanities during the past decade, including also applications in the field of education. The paper recalls Foucault's introduction of the notion of ‘governmentality’ and its relation to the ‘mapping of the present’ and sketches briefly the way in which the studies of governmentality have been elaborated in general and in the context of research in education more particularly. It indicates how the studies of governmentality can be related to a cartography of the learning society, a cartography which helps us to get lost and to liberate our view.

没有美育的教育，是不完全的教育。教育的本质是培养人的道德素质和科学文化素质，造就德、智、体美全面发展的人才，最终实现人类自身的美化。因此，美育是中小学素质教育的内容。语文课堂应成为美育的重要阵地。成功的语文教学应当充满了美感。语文教学要用美吸引学生，用美感染学生，用美塑造学生，要把学生培养成具有高尚审美情趣，能理解美和创造美的人才。这是语文教学的要求，更是时代发展的需要。
