Summary The responses to the survey are more diverse than the authors anticipated. ECEE seems to attract people from many disciplines, specializations, and backgrounds. They read a great variety of journals and belong to many different organizations. The number of people with a strong interest in environmental education during the early childhood years seems to be growing. Individuals interested in becoming more involved in environmental education at the early childhood level may wish to contact the ECEE networking center at Bowling Green State University for further information. Individuals with ideas for the future direction of the network are also encouraged to contact the center. Interest has been expressed in establishing a World Wide Web page for the network. Faculty dynamation: Guided empowerment

Dynamation is the integrative process whereby the sum total of all learning, knowledge, experiences, and feelings are brought to bear on productive, creative action and problem solving. In this paper, we describe some of the benefits of dynamation, outline a general approach to it-including the importance of friendship (the core of the empowerment process)- and explain several key incentives that will encourage faculty, through dynamation, to engage in growth activities. Throughout the article we discuss ten techniques developers can use. Our focus is on informal facilitator-enhanced (guided) empowerment. That is, we look at growth that is likely to result when developers work with faculty with the goal of growth, change, and development.Richard L. Replication and Pedagogy in the History of Psychology VI: Egon Brunswik on Perception and Explicit Reasoning

Egon Brunswik (1903–1955) first made an interesting distinction between perception and explicit reasoning, arguing that perception included quick estimates of an object’s size, nearly always resulting in good approximations in uncertain environments, whereas explicit reasoning, while better at achieving exact estimates, could often fail by wide margins. An experiment conducted by Brunswik to investigate these ideas was never published and the only available information is a figure of the results presented in a posthumous book in 1956. We replicated and extended his study to gain insight into the procedures Brunswik used in obtaining his results. Explicit reasoning resulted in fewer errors, yet more extreme ones than perception. Brunswik’s graphical analysis of the results led to different conclusions, however, than did a modern statistically-based analysis.

The Ohio Career Education Association: Providing leadership in a changing society

Summary Founded in 1975, the Ohio Career Education Association has grown and matured into a vital, action-oriented professional organization of 1,700 members. Major initiatives include an outstanding annual conference, a quarterly newsletter, legislative relations activities, partnerships, publicity campaigns, and professional development seminars.CEA's dual mission is to promote the growth and expansion of career education in Ohio and to serve the interests of career education practitioners — teachers, counselors, career program personnel, and other local supporters.The key to CEA's success is that it functions as an active member of Ohio's career education network.Curt Heady is Director, Tri-County Education Program, Nelsonville, Ohio. He is also currently serving as Immediate Past President of the Ohio Career Education Association.

Replication and Pedagogy in the History of Psychology II: Fowler & Wells’s Phrenology

Phrenologists believed that specific brain regions corresponded to certain character traits. In addition, the size of each brain region was believed to determine the strength of the respective trait. Phrenology originated in Austria with Franz Josef Gall and was popularized and commercialized in America at the end of the 19th century by Orson Squire Fowler. In this project, we conducted a replication of Fowler’s phrenology in order to better understand the specificity of the manualized methodology, the extent to which the methodology allowed for positive versus negative analyses, and the implications for the scientific rejection and public acceptance of phrenology. The results of our replication revealed that the subjective judgments and biases of the examiner strongly influence the results of phrenological analyses. Important aspects of biodiversity conservation and sustainable development for Environmental Education programmes

Abstract

The discussion in this article is based on the premise that there is a need to include specialised knowledge about the environment and its resources into Environmental Education programmes in South Africa. The investigation is thus focused on the so-called species approach to sustain biodiversity. In this regard the conservation status of a number of threatened plants, mammals, birds and butterflies are surveyed. The aim of the survey is to illustrate which category of species could be considered for inclusion in Environmental Education research and programmes in South Africa. Sustainable development and the benefits of biodiversity conservation are discussed, inter alia, poverty alleviation through job creation, game-ranching and eco-tourism. The research is concluded with recommendations for Environmental Education programmes, educators and learners.

绿色教育是从环境关怀和绿色发展视角提出的全新教育理念。文章探讨了绿色教育的内涵,分析了当下高等师范院校绿色教育及课程建设存在的问题,提出通过第一课堂、第二课堂、第三课堂"三课"联动,实现绿色教育进教材、进课堂、进头脑、见成效即"三进一见"的目标,以彰显高等师范院校绿色教育特色。     

Secondary School Teachers’ Knowledge and Attitudes Towards Renewable Energy Sources

Investigating knowledge, perceptions as well as attitudes of public that concern various aspects of environmental issues is of high importance for Environmental Education. An integrated understanding of these parameters can properly support the planning of Environmental Education curriculum and relevant educational materials. In this survey we investigated knowledge and attitudes of secondary school teachers in Greece towards renewable energy sources, particularly wind and solar energy systems. A questionnaire with both open and close questions was used as the main methodological instrument. Findings revealed that although teachers were informed about renewable energy sources and well disposed towards these sources, they hardly expressed clear positions regarding several issues about wind and solar energy technologies and farms. Moreover such themes are limited integrated in teaching either as extra curricular educational programs or through the curriculum. These findings cannot confirm that teachers could influence students’ opinion towards renewable energy systems. Thus, authorities should invest more in Environmental Education and relevant Teachers' Education.     

A Model for Curricular Revision: The Case of Engineering

The ability to teach one’s self is a critical skill for workers in the 21st century because of the rapidity of change and innovation. To educate students to meet this challenge, we need to re-envision curriculum with the goal of producing graduates who have the ability to complete the transition from novice to expert after graduation and continue to deepen their expertise throughout their careers. Using engineering education as a model of current efforts in curricular revision, we present a method for curricular review based on learning types in order to design an undergraduate experience that is transformative and congruent with a learner-centered approach. Michael Harris received his Ph.D. in Public Policy from Indiana University, his Master’s degree from Tel-Aviv University, and his undergraduate degree in economics and business administration from Ben-llan University. He is a graduate of the Harvard Graduate School of Education Institute for Educational Management (IEM) and Management Development Program (MDP). Dr. Harris serves as the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Kettering University. Roxanne Cullen holds a Ph.D. in English from Bowling Green State University with a specialization in Composition Theory and Rhetoric. She is currently Professor of English at Ferris State University, where she has also held various administrative posts.

在国际上,绿色职业教育理念逐渐成熟并走入实践。绿色职业教育与绿色教育、环境教育以及可持续发展教育在内涵上存在区别,不能混用。在我国,绿色职业教育实践进展十分缓慢,这主要是因为职业教育各方对绿色职业教育的认识不到位,普遍对其内涵及外延理解不清晰;绿色职业教育是随着近年绿色经济发展逐步被重视的,不受重视的传统使其缺乏发展基础;相关研究成果匮乏,也难以对其实践形成较强的推动力。为使我国绿色职业教育克服这些阻力取得突破性进展,应持续引入国际最新绿色职业教育研究成果,促进国内对绿色职业教育的认知;在对职业教育工作者的培养培训中加入绿色职业教育内容,强化他们开展绿色职业教育的意识和能力;在各类职业教育评估中加入绿色指标,以评促改,全方位推动绿色职业教育实践。

本文从西方媒体歪曲报道西藏打砸烧抢事件切入,阐述西方媒体挑战我国国家主权的表现,进而分析西方媒体构成对我国主权挑战的原因,并从健全新闻发言人制度,加强传媒技术科研与开发,努力推进国家间文化交流,倡导建立国际新闻监管机制、建设更加民主、文明的中国五个方面阐述应对策略。     

The Protestant Work Ethic,Disability, and the Rehabilitation Student

Fifty graduate students in rehabilitation counseling were surveyed regarding their attitudes toward the Protestant Work Ethic (PWE) using the original and a modified form of the Bowling Green University Survey of Work Values. Results indicated that the students were more likely to endorse those aspects of the PWE reflecting the intrinsic value of work than those dealing with earnings, social status, and advancement. In addition, the students were found to generally hold the same PWE orientation for themselves as they did for disabled persons.

The synergy of minority student persistence and faculty renewal

In response to increased student assessment and accountability concerns, colleges and universities have been called on to increase their efforts to improve the retention rates of an increasingly diverse student body. This article outlines a synergistic strategy for promoting minority student persistence through faculty renewal efforts that encourage faculty to question their cultural beliefs and academic values concerning the teaching and learning enterprise.Dr. Kay F. Norman is currently with Delaware State University where she is Director of the Center for Excellence in Teaching. She also teaches graduate courses in Educational Assessment and Special Education Administration and Supervision. She holds an Ed.D. in Higher Education Administration with emphasis in Student Services from Texas Southern University. Her research interests are in student retention, assessment, and effective teaching. James Norman, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor of Education at Delaware State University's School of Education.
