We're Listening: Using Patron Feedback to Assess and Enhance Purchase on Demand

Oregon State University Libraries piloted a one-year interlibrary loan purchase on demand service beginning in February 2009. An online survey was used to measure patron satisfaction and determine future borrowing and recommendation behavior. These results, along with patron comments, were used to explore future success of the service and ways to enhance the permanent service. Results provide context for the success of purchase-on-demand programs and support the development of innovative tools that increase the efficiency of purchase-on-demand workflow. Oregon State University Libraries permanently adopted the successful service and is working to incorporate patron input on purchase decisions.     

Exploring Patron-Driven Access Models for E-journals and E-books

This session presented two librarians' experiences with patron-driven access models. With an emphasis on collaboration, the librarians explained how pay-per-view and just-in-time acquisitions models are changing how users access information in an era of constrained budgets. The presenters shared strategies and decision-making methods with the audience, as well as the benefits and challenges of these models.     

Patron-Initiated Purchasing: Evaluating Criteria and Workflows

The University of Mississippi Libraries began a patron-initiated purchasing program in 2009. After a successful year of purchasing, the authors evaluated both the criteria and workflows. The process included sharing results with subject librarians and the Collection Development Steering Committee. As a result, changes were made to both the criteria and the workflows.     

The Assessment of Patron-Initiated Collection Development via Interlibrary Loan at a Comprehensive University

Patron-initiated collecting via interlibrary has been examined regularly in the literature over the past decade, with articles examining the topic at public libraries, liberal arts colleges, and large doctoral institutions. This paper examines a patron-initiated collection development program at Grand Valley State University, a comprehensive university with an enrollment of 24,000 students. It compares Grand Valley State University's experiences with those at other types of institutions. The paper also discusses the different models used to assess the success of these programs within the literature and how Grand Valley State University used WorldCat Collection Analysis, circulation statistics, and peer comparisons to assess its program.     

Expanding Access: An Evaluation of ReadCube Access as an ILL Alternative

ABSTRACT

ReadCube Access is a patron-driven, document delivery system that provides immediate access to articles from journals owned by Nature Publishing Group. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the use of ReadCube Access as an interlibrary loan (ILL) alternative for nonsubscribed Nature journals at Auburn University, a research university with a School of Pharmacy and a School of Veterinary Medicine. An analysis of ten months’ usage and costs are presented along with the results of a user satisfaction survey. Auburn University Libraries found ReadCube to be an acceptable alternative to ILL for unsubscribed Nature journals and at current levels of use and cost, consider ReadCube to be financially sustainable.     

A Purchase-on-Demand Pilot Project at the University of Arkansas,for the Proceedings of the Materials Research Society Symposiums

In fiscal year 2004–2005, papers published in the Material Research Society's Proceedings series were the fifth most requested interlibrary loan item submitted by faculty and students at the University of Arkansas. This prompted the authors to determine if a purchase-on-demand scheme for items in this series, made without any subject specialist input, would allow the library to increase the strength of its collection at a price that was no greater than or lower than the real cost of traditional interlibrary loan. The study analyzes and describes the parameters of the data. Results suggest that this type of plan might be useful for libraries lacking a designated selector.     

馆际互借型PDA图书质量评价及思考

[目的/意义]作为一种新兴的文献采访模式,读者决策采购(PDA)在一些发达国家已经得到广泛应用,但是利用该模式采购图书的质量受到了部分业界人士的质疑。采用馆藏适用性方法对馆际互借型PDA图书质量进行考察,提出优化该模式的建议,以利于PDA模式在我国的应用中具有更大的适应性和劣势可控性。[方法/过程]从项目性质、实施的时间跨度、评估方法以及研究问题的角度出发,遴选3所国外大学图书馆的PDA项目作为案例,围绕业界对PDA模式的争论点,从文献的内容、价格、利用情况及读者与馆员对文献的评价4个方面分析评估馆际互借型PDA图书质量,并针对该模式在我国的应用提出几点建议。[结果/结论]从图书质量评价角度探讨完善国内馆际互借型PDA项目的干预措施,使馆际互借型PDA在我国图书馆资源建设中发挥更大的作用。     

Change your Service Policies Based on your Data

Texas A&M University (TAMU) Libraries' free “Get it for me” service is popular and appreciated by its students and faculty alike. Nevertheless, we noticed many items were not picked up after receipt. In the spring semester of 2016, for each item not picked up, we emailed our customers to ask why they did not come to pick up their requests. Based on the data, we made service policy changes in the summer semester of 2016. As a result we saw a decrease in not picked up rate since. This paper explains the methods we used to achieve this improved results.     

Patron-Driven Acquisition and Circulation at an Academic Library: Interaction Effects and Circulation Performance of Print Books Acquired via Librarians’ Orders,Approval Plans,and Patrons’ Interlibrary Loan Requests

Numerous publications on patron-driven acquisition (PDA) for print books and similar materials have reported that patron-requested materials circulate more. Tying circulation to selector may be failing to address the complex of factors that contributes to items' circulation. In the present study, the authors revisit a PDA program's data and to determine whether PDA print books' circulation advantage persists when the potential interactions of several additional variables are taken into account. As with prior studies, library patrons were significantly better predictors of circulation than were librarians or approval plans. However, librarians proved to be significantly better predictors than were approval plans.     

Gap Analysis by Subject Area of the University of Houston Main Campus Library Collection

This article outlines preliminary results of a complete gap analysis of the collections at the University of Houston Libraries. Methodology for a large-scale collection analysis project is explored here, including necessary collaborators for successful and accurate data collection. As well, the preliminary results of phase one of the project, studying usage by subject area and comparing to available interlibrary loan data, are outlined. Limitations and future directions for the project are also discussed.

本文分析了图书馆馆际互借和文献传递中涉及的侵权风险：复制权、网络信息传播权、发表权等方面。在阐述国外关于馆际互借合理使用的立法现状的基础上，讨论利用合理使用制度解决侵权纠纷的可行性，并提出最根本的解决办法是和数据库商进行协商，取得数字资源的利用权。     

World Wide Web Page Design: A Structured Approach

SUMMARY

In conclusion, homepage construction based on structured programming concepts makes it simpler to build a functional homepage. It also assists in organization of the homepage and provides for easier maintenance and modification. Figure 3 contains an example of a simple home page which incorporates the principles outlined in this article. As more libraries create their own Web sites, use of structured organization can provide a framework for control over the many variables in this process.

Interlibrary Loan Meets Six Sigma: The University of Arizona Library's Success Applying Process Improvement

In 2004, the University of Arizona Library Document Delivery Team embarked on a strategic project to assess the service quality and cost of filling interlibrary loan journal article borrowing requests. The Document Delivery Team utilized a Six Sigma Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control process improvement method. Improvements that were implemented as a result of this study led to increased satisfaction, decreased turnaround time, and lower cost per delivered article. Customer satisfaction surveys were utilized to discover customer expectations and requirements and to evaluate the effect of improvements on the customer experience. Measurement of internal business processes and cost analysis tools were used to determine cost savings.     

Further Reflections on the WorldCat Collection Analysis Tool

This article focuses on a recent enhancement to the WorldCat Collection Analysis tool, the Interlibrary Loan Analyses module, exploring the possibilities that this enhancement offers for strategic collection development. The study concentrates on the tool as a way to assess the impact of the recent growth at North Carolina State University in biomedicine and human medicine programs. The research contained in this article originated from a session presented at XXVII Annual Charleston Conference, which was held in Charleston, South Carolina, on November 8, 2007.

Ariel via E-mail: New Possibilities for the Non-Ariel Equipped Library

ABSTRACT

Ariel, a software system enabling the transmission of documents over the internet via the FTP protocol initially could only function in a station-to-station manner, usually with machines dedicated solely for this purpose. With Version 2 and up, Ariel stations can now transmit articles via Internet e-mail to be received by any MIME capable e-mail system with sufficient file size capacity. Libraries with Ariel2 are encouraged to enable this feature so that non-Ariel libraries may benefit from this revolutionary technology without expense.
