An Examination of Relational Uncertainty,Romantic Intent,and Attraction on Communicative and Relational Outcomes in Cross-Sex Friendships

This investigation explored the impact of relational uncertainty and its correlates (i.e., attraction and romantic intent) on cognitive, communicative, and behavioral outcomes in cross-sex friendships. Participants included 352 people who reported on a current cross-sex friendship. Hierarchical regression analyses indicated that social attraction increased relational satisfaction while relational uncertainty decreased relational satisfaction. Further, social attraction decreased topic avoidance while romantic intent and relational uncertainty increased topic avoidance. Finally, social attraction increased the use of relationship talk, routine contact and activity, and emotional support maintenance behaviors, while relational uncertainty decreased the use of these maintenance behaviors. This study provides researchers with a starting point for understanding the consequences associated with interpersonal attraction, romantic intent, and relational uncertainty in cross-sex friendships.     

Relational Maintenance in On-again/Off-again Relationships: An Assessment of How Relational Maintenance,Uncertainty, and Commitment Vary by Relationship Type and Status

Because on-again/off-again (on-off) relationships typically maintain their relationships in some form even after relational dissolution, a communication process that may be particularly relevant to understanding these relationships is relational maintenance. Using cross-sectional data, the current study assessed relational maintenance, uncertainty, and commitment to further understand how on-off relationships differ from relationships that do not have a history of renewals (i.e., noncyclical relationships). The sample of 487 participants completed a survey on either their current dating relationship or a postdissolution relationship. As predicted, on-off partners used less maintenance behaviors than noncyclical partners in current relationships, but, contrary to predictions, on-off partners did not use more maintenance behaviors in their postdissolution relationships than partners without a history of renewing. Path models assessing the interrelationships among maintenance, relationship uncertainty, and commitment also suggest relational maintenance operates somewhat differently in on-off and noncyclical relationships. Implications for on-off as well as dating relationships in general are discussed.     

People,places, and questions: An investigation of the everyday life information-seeking behaviors of urban young adults

This article presents preliminary findings from a research grant on the everyday life information-seeking (ELIS) behaviors of urban young adults. Twenty-seven teens aged 14 through 17 participated in the study. Qualitative data were gathered using written activity logs and semi-structured group interviews. A typology of urban teens' preferred ELIS sources, media types, and query topics is presented. The typology shows friends and family as preferred ELIS sources, cell phones as the preferred method of mediated communication, and schoolwork, time-related queries, and social life as the most common and most significant areas of ELIS. The results indicate a heavy preference for people as information sources and that urban teens hold generally unfavorable views of libraries and librarians. The conclusion lists questions that information practitioners should consider when designing programs and services for urban teens and calls for researchers to consider this often-ignored segment of the population as potential study participants.     

数据库绩效的变异系数与灰色关联度分析及实证研究

采用变异系数法对28个数据库绩效综合评价相关指标进行权重计算,剔除重要性和相关性较小的指标,得到样本数据库综合绩效评价的23个最终评价指标体系及相应各指标的权重,并对各指标权重分布的合理性进行验证;然后结合灰色关联度分析法评价各样本数据库的综合绩效以及通过计算各样本数据库5个维度指标的关联度值分析影响各样本数据库绩效优劣的重要因素,从而找到提升数据库绩效的途径。     

科技期刊编辑职业满意度调查与分析

采用问卷法调查重庆市科技期刊编辑人员职业满意度,以13个因子代表满意度13个维度.结果显示:职业满意度总体评价良好,及格线以上人数占87.5%.按年龄分组统计,青年组得分显著高于其他年龄组;按期刊类型统计,科普类期刊组得分最高,其次是学术类期刊组,而技术类期刊组得分最低;按编辑的学历专业分组,显示文科组和理科组得分显著高于工科组.影响不同类型期刊编辑职业满意度的因素,主要是编辑对刊物发展现状和前景的评价及工作环境、人际关系评价,其次是编辑的年龄、学历和专业.     

Individual differences in the perception of comforting messages: An exploratory investigation

This study assessed the extent to which six individual difference variables—sex, interpersonal construct differentiation, interpersonal construct abstractness, emotional empathy, and two aspects of communication apprehension—affect the perceptions of preformulated comforting strategies. Theoretical, methodological, and pedagogical implications of the findings are discussed.     

Attaining information literacy: An investigation of the relationship between skill level,self-estimates of skill,and library anxiety

Competency theory predicts a miscalibration between students' self-assessments of their information literacy skills and their actual skill level. This study investigates whether such a disparity is evident among incoming freshmen who test as non-proficient on a standardized test of information literacy. In addition, this study analyzes Information Literacy Test scores and library anxiety test scores to provide preliminary data on whether library anxiety is related to information literacy skill attainment. Findings reveal that the relationship between information literacy skills and self-assessments predicted by competency theory are evident in the domain of information literacy. This study did not find an association between information literacy skill scores and total library anxiety scores. However, a significant negative correlation between information literacy scores and the subscale “knowledge of the library” indicates that as information literacy scores rise, anxiety scores related to a lack of knowledge of the library fall. The findings suggest that traditional information literacy instruction may not be effective with non-proficient students, who are unlikely to see themselves as needing or benefiting from such instruction.     

After the spillover effect: news flows and power relations in Chinese mainstream media

Through a case study on the news flow of an online protest in China, this study explores how the power relations among the mainstream media affect, and are affected by, the spillover effect of news. Even though the Internet does serve as a catalyst to initiate alternative voices that otherwise wouldn't be heard in the established media, the results reveal that the power structure inherent in the mainstream media (particularly within their online versions) such as bureaucratic ranks and institutional ties with party organs, plays a significant role in shaping the trajectory of news flow and media framing strategies. The Internet compensates for the disadvantage of the lower-level media that are short of political resources, while the higher-level media tend to rely on the political capital to exercise their influence. At the same time, the media with more political resources have become increasingly intrepid in challenging the state. Such a dynamic takes place in the context of the changing state-media relations that have seen the authoritarian state shift its information control from a totalitarian mode to a practical one, even though the latter may open up a space for flow of information that can sometimes undermine state power.

采用问卷法调查重庆市高校学报编辑人才职业满意度,以10个因子代表满意度10个维度.结果显示:职业满意度总体评价良好,及格线以上人数占78.6%;"领导重视""人际关系"2个因子得分较低,并与其他因子高度关联,是影响编辑职业满意度的最大负面因素;"报酬待遇"因子得分最低,但与其他因子关联性不大;"立志本行、发挥特长"因子得分较高,且与其他因子高度关联,是影响满意度的最大激励因素.     

428种科技期刊开本及幅面尺寸现状调查

GB/T78887<图书和杂志开本及幅面尺寸>规定,787mm×1092mm纸张的开本(188mm×260mm)可作为过渡,沿用到2000年但要逐步淘汰;而经修订的自2000年5月1日起实施的GB/T7881999[1]已取消了这种非标准开本,规定图书杂志A4开本的公称尺寸为210mm×297mm.为了了解科技期刊开本及所用幅面尺寸的现状,笔者对此进行了调查.

An investigation into the move towards electronic journals: a case study of NHS libraries in Kent,Surrey and Sussex

Electronic journals are so embedded into practice in academic libraries that it is easy to forget that this is not the case everywhere. In NHS libraries, for example, the staff face a particular set of issues. This article is based on Rebecca England's dissertation on this topic, completed as part of the MSc Econ course in Information and Library studies at Aberystwyth University. Rebecca is E‐resources Librarian at the Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust. She investigated the momentum towards electronic journals in NHS libraries in the Kent, Surrey and Sussex region and the potential for a regional purchasing consortium. AM
