RACISM AND HISTORICAL UNDERSTANDING: SOME USES OF BLACK HISTORY

Is the popularity of market-based educational reform among urban residents of color the epitaph of a progressive educational vision, or does it bespeak a struggle to reincarnate that vision within a postwelfare state? This article examines ethnographic work with African American voucher families in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Discursive overlaps and tensions among three sets of stakeholders—African American voucher families, the powerful social forces that fund voucher reform, and defenders of public schools and educational progressivism—suggest avenues for rearticulating voucher families to ultimately more democratic and effective educational reform movements.     

ETV AND FILM MATERIALS : THEIR INCEPTION AND DESIGN

What are the first impressions of a newcomer to the world of educational film and television? First, he can hardly fail to be struck by the lack of integration of film and television production into the general academic scheme. Secondly, there seems to be a universal lack of awareness of the possibility of dividing educational production into two categories according to purpose ‐‐ those intended to impart knowledge and information and those intended to impart understanding. The author suggests general improvements to be made permitting more economic usage of educational media henceforward.

EFFECTIVENESS OF HIGH SCHOOL GRADES FOR PREDICTING COLLEGE GRADES OF BLACK STUDENTS: A REVIEW AND DISCUSSION1

The purpose of this study was to reexamine the value of high school grades (relative to standardized test scores) for predicting college grades of black students. Data from previous studies and from a predominantly black university were analyzed. Results tend to indicate that high school grades do not consistently make the greatest contribution in predicting college grades of black students, perhaps particularly of men, whereas they do for whites. Unreliability of grade reporting, invalidity of grades in high school, restriction in range due to selection processes, and intergroup differences in personality characteristics were advanced to explain this phenomenon. Further research on this problem was suggested in view of the fact that many selective institutions are relying heavily on high school grades in their selection of black students.
