Perspectives on… Roaches, Guerrillas, and “Librarians on the Loose”

Sophistication and accessibility can be dangerous bedfellows, especially when it comes to information sources. One of the real challenges in undergraduate academic libraries can be connecting students in a meaningful way to the resources that will be most helpful and understandable for them. This article discusses how techniques borrowed from the world of business and marketing, as well as customer service techniques, can provide some useful strategies for librarians serving undergraduates.     

图档博与大学合作共建各地“城市记忆”

[目的/意义] 探讨在保护城市文脉和留存集体记忆的背景下如何有效建设"城市记忆"，包括如何拓展建设主体、构建协作平台、使"城市记忆"建设与研究可持续，为我国"城市记忆"建设提供更多新思路。[方法/过程] 基于对国外代表性"城市记忆"项目的网络调查、文献调查以及对国内主要"城市记忆"项目的实地调查和电话调查，发现我国"城市记忆"建设目前面临资源采集人力不足、多方协作平台缺失，建设和研究不可持续等问题，从而提出了拓展建设主体的诉求。[结果/结论] 将建设主体从图档博拓展到大学，可以充分利用大学生群体这一人力资源优势进行更广泛持久的资源采集，依托大学的多学科优势可以搭建有利于资源整合的多方协作平台，依托大学持续的教学科研活动可以保障记忆项目建设的可持续发展。     

French international booksellers, suppliers to libraries, à la fin du vingtième siècle

This article is a 1998 field report from Paris on the major French international booksellers who supply libraries throughout the world, in particular the firms of Aux Amateurs de Livres, Library Service Association, and Jean Touzot. Data were gathered by means of interviews, a questionnaire, and direct observation. The article describes the histories of the firms and their $10 million market, organization, services, operations, and outlook.     

The EcoTarium Story—Past,Present, and Future

This paper outlines the story of the country's second-oldest natural history museum from its founding in 1825 to the present. Its history includes seven name changes reflecting the young society's struggle to survive, the changing cultural environment, and the extension of its audiences from the immediate Worcester neighborhood to the New England regional area. The article also reviews its scope from several cabinets of specimens to displays of wildlife, exhibitions about ecology, astronomy, and technology, along with comprehensive education programming.
