Early in his childhood, as soon as he was able to speak, he was asked what kind of face he would like to have. They agreed when he said he' d like to have a blue face like his mother, who had hers from being born in the sea. Pith(抽去;杀死) from the claws of a certain bird furnished the dye, which he let the nurse wipe over his brow and cheeks. Soon his face was blue and stayed blue; and although no one said it to him, everyone thought he was a beautiful boy. 相似文献

Picasso and the poet Max Jacob, down but not out in Paris, shared a bed in turn. Jacob slept at night while Picasso worked, and Picasso slept by day when Jacob worked as a novelty-shop clerk. On arising in the morning, Jacob would often have to walk on a floor carpeted with drawings. Later, Jacob's footprints had to be removed by art experts. 相似文献

There was once a King of Persia who had a beautiful wife. He loved her very much, but she was a wicked woman. When the King discovered her wickedness, he killed her. He decided that all women were wicked and that he would punish them. He gave orders that he was to be given a new wife every day. After one day's marriage he would cut off her head and marry again. This went on for some time and all the people of the country were unhappy. 相似文献

In the modern era, the Jewish-Americans were faced with challenges because of the assimilation and modernity environment in the US, and as a result, many of them were in a double bind—to be an assimilated American citizen or to be a traditional Jew. With his work"The Imported Bridegroom", Abraham Cahan contemplated on the subject of Jewish immigration and assimilation and he made a ground-breaking contribution to the establishment of American modernity. This paper intends to analyze Cahan’s attitudes towards assimilation and modernity and how he builds up modernity for all of the Americans. Three characters in"The Imported Bridegroom", who stand for three prototypes of modern Jewish-Americans confronting the overwhelming flood of assimilation and the duty for retaining their traditions, will be analyzed. Through the composition of this work, Cahan tried to spread the Jewish culture on the one hand, and on the other, he warned the peripheral that it was difficult to be assimilated without disasters even if they had made contribution to the formation of modernity. 相似文献

Smile at each other, smile at your wife, smile at your husband, smile at your children, smile at each other-it doesn't matter who it is-and that will help you to grow up in greater love for each other. Mother TeresaMany Americans are familiar with The Little Prince, a wonderful book by Antoine de Saint-Exupery. This is a whimsical and fabulous book and works as a children's story as well as a thought-provoking adult fable. Far fewer are aware of Saint-Exupery's other writings, novels and short stories.Saint-Exupery was a fighter pilot who fought against the Nazis and was killed in action. Before World War Ⅱ, he fought in the Spanish Civil War against the fascists. He wrote a fascinating story based on that experience entitled The Smile( Le Sourire. )It is this story which I'd like to share with you now. It isn't clear whether or not he meant this to be autobiographical or fiction. I choose to believe it is the former. He said that he was captured by the enemy and thrown into a jail cell. He was sure that from the contemptuous looks and rough treatment he received from his jailers he would be executed the next day. From here, I'll tell the story as I remember it in my own words. 相似文献

Pablo Picasso, the great Spanish painter and sculptor, once said this about his ability: "My mother said to me, 'If you become a soldier, you'll be a general; if you become a monk, you'll end up as Pope.' Instead, I became a painter and wound up as Picasso." No lack of confidence here! 相似文献

To a student of English, reading is one of the four basic skills. And his ultimate goal in reading English is to be able grasp idea as quickly and eaily as he would if he were reading his native language. Yet in early stages of language acquisition, the first inclination in reading of most English students is to translate. Translation is a slow, laborious process. The writer's train of thoughts may become lost, as well as the enjoyment of reading. Moreover, translation is an art in itself and not a practical procedure for everyday reading. The student should attempt to develop a feeling for the target language so that he is really reading, not deciphering word for word. 相似文献
