Introduction to the Special Issue: Global Perspectives on Vocational Guidance

This thematic issue of the International Journal for Educational and Vocational Guidance includes a selection of papers presented at an IAEVG-NCDA Symposium, entitled “International Perspectives on Career Development”. The articles in this special issue deal with a number of topics related to international developments and perspectives, the impact of globalisation on guidance practice and research, and comparative approaches to educational and vocational guidance that differentiate career development practices in different countries. The outcome of the general discussion that centred around these specific themes at the International Symposium were jointly published in a special issue of the Career Development Quarterly, Vol. 54, No. 1.

Zusammenfassung. Einleitung zur Sonderausgabe: Weltweite Perspektiven der Berufsberatung Diese thematische Ausgabe des Internationalen Journals für Bildungs- und Berufsberatung enthält eine Auswahl von Vorträgen, die auf einem AIOSP-NCDA-Symposium mit dem Titel “Internationale Perspektiven der Berufslaufbahnentwicklung” gehalten wurden. Die Artikel dieser Sonderausgabe repräsentieren eine Anzahl von Themen, die internationale Entwicklungen und Perspektiven, die Auswirkungen der Globalisierung auf Praxis und Forschung zur Beruflichen Beratung sowie vergleichende Untersuchungen zur Bildungs- und Berufsberatung betreffen, die Beratungsansätze in verschiedenen Ländern voneinander differenzieren. Die Ergebnisse der allgemeinen Diskussion auf dem internationalen Symposium rund um diese Themen wurden bereits in einer gemeinschaftlich herausgegebenen Sonderausgabe des Career Development Quarterly, Jahrgang 54, Nr. 1, veröffentlicht.

Introducción al Número Especial: Perspectivas Globales de la Orientación Profesional Este número temático de la Revista Internacional de Orientación Educativa y Profesional incluye una selección de comunicaciones presentadas en un Simposio Internacional de la AIOEP-NCDA (Asociación Nacional del Desarrollo de la Carrera), denominado Perspectivas Internacionales sobre el Desarrollo de la Carrera. Los artículos de este número especial abordan una serie de temas relacionados con diversas perspectivas y avances en el ámbito internacional, el impacto de la globalización sobre la investigación y la práctica de la orientación, y análisis comparativos de la orientación educativa y profesional que permiten diferenciar prácticas de desarrollo de la carrera en distintos países. Los resultados y conclusiones de la discusión general que se generó en torno a estos temas en el Simposio Internacional se publicaron conjuntamente en un número especial del Career Development Quarterly, Vol. 54, No. 1.

Complex Systems Approaches to Educational Research: Introduction to the Special Issue

Abstract

To explore the movement toward increased complex systems (CS) research in education, this special issue of the Journal of Experimental Education was developed to identify some under-examined places where CS approaches have advanced research. The articles provide empirical examples of research leveraging methods and analyses from complexity science. In this introduction article to the special issue, we discuss the authors’ contributions to defining and explicating concepts and methods that fall under the umbrella of CS perspectives and how these methods were used to investigate complex processes in their topics of study. The articles capture the goal of the special issue to demonstrate how the research questions framed by CS assumptions can change our expectations about the very nature of the processes under study in education. We then take a more global perspective and acknowledge the commonalities amongst the papers, including (a) the reliance on intensive data to answer research questions, and (b) the use of dynamic approaches that yield findings about the stability and change of these systems and phenomena.

文章选取《职教论坛》、《中国职业技术教育》、《职业技术教育》、《教育与职业》和《高等农业教育》五种核心期刊,以其中所载农村职业教育类学术论文共178篇为研究对象,运用统计分析方法,试图回答农村职业教育研究哪些问题、采用什么方法研究、各期刊农村职业教育载文特点等问题,反映2012年我国农村职业教育研究现状.     

Meaningful integration within mixed methods studies: Identifying why,what, when,and how

This special issue of Contemporary Educational Psychology brings together an important collection of examples of how researchers have applied mixed methods research to study questions of interest in the field of educational psychology. Collectively, the articles illustrate the unique insights that can be gained when researchers intentionally integrate quantitative and qualitative methods within mixed methods studies. Further, the special issue highlights specific mixed methods strategies that the authors used to achieve and communicate the integration aspects within their studies. The authors’ application of these strategies provides useful models for scholars planning mixed methods studies and scholars reviewing reports of mixed methods studies within educational psychology and beyond.     

The Relation of Career Indecision and Parental Attachment among Iranian Undergraduate Students

Career indecision particularly among college and undergraduate students is a concern of counselors and psychologists. This concern has led to numerous research studies related to career indecision and factors that influence it, such as family relationships. In this regard, several studies have reported a significant relationship between career indecision and parental attachment. However, little research has been undertaken on the influence of this factor in regard to career indecision for Iranian students. For this purpose, 158 Iranian freshmen and sophomores who had completed the ‘Career Decision Scale’ (Osipow et al., Journal of Vocational Behavior 9:233–243, 1976) and had been identified as career-undecided, completed the ‘Inventory of Parents and Peer Attachment-Revised’ (Armsden & Greenberg, Journal of Youth and Adolescence 16:427–453, 1987). The results revealed that a significant negative relationship was found between career indecision and attachment to mother, whilst the relationship between career indecision and attachment to father was not significant. However, regression analysis showed parental attachment did not significantly predict career indecision of students. Implications and recommendations for further research are discussed.

"书院文化传承与开拓国际研讨会"在湖南大学岳麓书院成功举办。来自海内外的专家学者围绕着书院改制与现代教育、书院与儒学、韩国书院与国际儒学三个方面展开学术交流。会议以多视角、多学科开拓了书院研究的新方向。海外学者的积极参与,对韩国书院的持续研究成为本次会议的亮点。     

Inclusive education: pushing the boundaries

This special issue is introduced. The issue draws together a selection of articles uniting theoretical and field research dealing with the notion of inclusive education and the challenges encountered in the policy-making and implementation processes. These articles represent diverse, multifaceted theoretical, disciplinary and methodological approaches to inclusion. Throughout the issue, inclusion is seen as a guiding principle, helping to accomplish quality Education for All (EFA)—education systems that benefit from diversity, aiming to build a more just, democratic society. This special issue is devoted to the theme of the 48th International Conference of Education, “Inclusive Education: The Way of the Future” (Geneva, 25–28 November, 2008).

Reflecting on the Role of Competence and Culture in Consultation at the International Level

International educational consultation is challenging work that requires not only attention to best practices in consultation but also additional focus on cultural norms and regularities. In the three articles of this special issue, the consultation competencies of consultants play a critical role, as exemplified by entry issues, problem-solving practices, and relationship development. In addition, the overriding issue of culture and how it impacts consultation requires special attention for the international consultant as consultants attempt to use their expertise in new contexts.     

The development and current status of special education in Nicaragua

Ph.D. A researcher and Director of Studies at Stockholm University's Institute of International Education. He has conducted national studies of special needs education in Nicaragua and the United Republic of Tanzania, as well as written a number of articles and books on such topics as special needs education, educational evaluation and the restructuring of schooling in Sweden. His most recent publication isSpecial needs education in Nicaragua: a study of the prevalence of students with disabilities in primary schools and the factors affecting their successful participation (1994).     

理解与批判——“纪念卢梭诞辰300周年国际学术研讨会”综述

2012年5月26-27日,上海交通大学隆重召开＂从卢梭到马克思——纪念卢梭诞辰300周年国际学术研讨会＂。来自国内外十几家单位的卢梭研究专家学者们本着＂返本创新＂的精神,围绕着卢梭的文本方法、政治思想、教育思想、浪漫主义思想、启蒙思想、社会学思想以及卢梭与马克思的思想关系等七个分议题,从东西方的不同研究视域着眼于现实问题的思考,致力于卢梭思想的现代性创新。     

对残疾人从学校到工作过渡的探讨

残疾人从学校毕业后不能顺利地就业,是长期以来各级部门和家长极为关注的问题。本文从介绍和分析西方“从学校到工作的过渡”的理论入手,试着探讨我国残疾人从学校到工作的过渡问题,并提出了建立残疾人职业培训中心、残疾人职业指导与咨询中心以及残疾人“医疗——教育——职业”康复中心等建议,以此来提高残疾人的职业素质,实现他们从学校到工作的顺利过渡。     

The European consultation on Career Guidance in further,higher and continuing education

The topics on which these three groups focused were: Work, Unemployment and Leisure: Implications for Career Guidance; The Career Guidance Process and the Psychology of the Individual; and The Use of Computer Assisted Guidance Systems in Career Guidance and Their Implications.Although the topical listings for these groups may seem quite divergent as to focus of content, some common themes were evident to me as a visiting member to these three groups. I want to reflect upon a few of these themes before summarizing from the working group reports.     

Transferable skills representations in a Portuguese college sample: gender, age, adaptability and vocational development

The departing point of this study is the theoretical framework of “Making the Match project” (Evers and Rush in Management Learning 27:275–299, 1996) about how to develop a common language among stakeholders regarding transferable skills. Thus, the paper examines the impact of demographic variables (age and gender) and developmental dimensions (Career adaptability and Vocational development) in the representations of transferable skills construction within a Portuguese sample of first-year college students (Vocational developmental variables are part of career construction theory; Savickas 2001, 2002, 2005, Journal of Vocational Behavior 75:239–250, 2009), a theoretical framework that significantly supports the notion that the acquisition of transferable skills is one of the consequences of vocational tasks’ resolution. Results suggested that career adaptability seems to be the most robust predictor for the transferable skills’ groups advanced by Evers and colleagues, followed by career development, and, finally, age and gender as a block. Results are discussed in the light of the two aforementioned main frameworks.     

Introduction to the Special Issue on Perspectivesand Experiences on Mentoring Undergraduate Students in Research: Part II

Abstract

This issue is the second of a special PRIMUS two-part issue collecting articles on undergraduate research from experienced faculty mentors. We offer it as a valuable resource for faculty leading undergraduate research programs. This issue presents a collection of papers offering advice on a variety of specific topics important for leaders of undergraduate research programs. Issues of finding and designing appropriate and accessible research projects, assessing undergraduate research, and publicizing it in the media are addressed.
