Professional staff contributions to student retention and success in higher education

ABSTRACT

Student attrition remains a persistent problem within the Australian higher education sector. Contributing factors include financial, reputational and quality issues, which can pose significant risks for a university’s sustainability. Institutional culture is fundamental to decisions student make about withdrawing or remaining in higher education. Therefore, student retention requires a sustained, deeply embedded commitment from all parts of the institution, placing student experience at the forefront of all activities in the student lifecycle. Applying a lifecycle approach to the way in which institutions think about student retention benefits students by providing comprehensive and consistent support. Given that less is known about how professional staff contribute to student academic learning journeys as part of whole of institution responses to student retention, this paper focusses on the contributions that professional staff make within the student lifecycle and how they can most readily map their contributions to student retention and success.

On the contributions of music to media productions

Does the use of musical accompaniment in instructional media heighten enjoyment, enhance motivation, or increase learning? After tracing music’s role in the development of motion pictures, this article discusses ways instructional message designers can increase the effectiveness of their productions through music. Studies reviewed in this article reveal that musical variables such as tempo, modality, rhythm, and harmony play an important part in determining the affective or emotional response of message receivers. If instructional media producers gain a more thorough understanding of the impact different variables have on audiences, they will be able to select appropriate music to help convey their message. Suggestions are made for future research.

在查阅了大量排球相关研究专著、文献资料的基础上，根据排球运动的发展与项目特征，结合现代教育理论，当代社会学、体育心理学等相关学科，分析了排球运动的健身功能，讨论了通过排球运动健身的发展趋势。     

加强经管类专业实验室建设途径探究

高校经管类专业建设实验室有很重要的作用,但是当前高校经管类专业实验室建设中存在不少误区。本文阐述了当前高校经管类专业实验室建设所存在的问题,并且提出一些建议,来加强实验室建设,要优化资源配置,校内实验室与校外实验室联合起来,把学生培养成理论结合实际的综合型人才。     

Teacher feedback in the reception class

This article reports a small scale study into teacher feedback in the reception class and its associations with young children's positive adjustment to school. Striking differences were found between the feedback given to the children according to their perceived adjustment. The article also highlights the rather narrow repertoire of feedback used by teachers and their emphasis on negative rather than positive feedback to the children who had not settled. The issues raised are pertinent throughout the primary age phase and may alert teachers to the possibility of over-reliance on some feedback styles and their negative influence on children's learning.     

论滕大春在外国教育史领域的贡献

滕大春先生是新中国外国教育史学科的主要奠基者之一,改革开放时期外国教育史领域公认的领军人物.他自觉地把辩证唯物主义和历史唯物主义的观点和方法运用到我国外国教育史的教学和研究中,创造性地对外国教育史的含义、学习外国教育史的意义以及学习和研究外国教育史应坚持的基本原则进行了全面系统的论述,并把它用来指导河北大学的外国教育史研究,取得了突出的成就.了解和把握其在外国教育史研究中的杰出贡献,对于建立我国的外国教育史学科,加快我国外国教育史研究的步伐,丰富和完善我国教育理论宝库,对我国当前的教育理论研究和教育实践都具有重要的指导意义.     

教师职业责任是教师专业发展的关键

从教师专业发展要求的角度,结合汶川大地震中教师的事例,阐述教师职业责任的内涵和内容,论述教师职业责任的履行是教师专业发展的关键。     

Assessing contributions to group assignments

We report the use of a combination of self‐ and peer‐assessment in an undergraduate social psychology laboratory course. Students worked in small groups on a self‐directed empirical project that they each wrote up independently as a laboratory report. Marks for the written assignment were moderated by a contribution index measure based on the self‐ and peer‐assessment measures. Our analyses indicated that: (i) students took the peer‐assessment process seriously, clearly differentiating between group members on the contributions questionnaires; (ii) students show a self‐bias, rating their own contribution to the group task higher than that of other group members; (iii) for a large majority of students the contribution index resulted in very little moderation of the final assignment marks; (iv) there was a strong correlation between the contribution index and the overall assignment score. Implications for the assessment of group work are considered.
