LETOR: A benchmark collection for research on learning to rank for information retrieval

LETOR is a benchmark collection for the research on learning to rank for information retrieval, released by Microsoft Research Asia. In this paper, we describe the details of the LETOR collection and show how it can be used in different kinds of researches. Specifically, we describe how the document corpora and query sets in LETOR are selected, how the documents are sampled, how the learning features and meta information are extracted, and how the datasets are partitioned for comprehensive evaluation. We then compare several state-of-the-art learning to rank algorithms on LETOR, report their ranking performances, and make discussions on the results. After that, we discuss possible new research topics that can be supported by LETOR, in addition to algorithm comparison. We hope that this paper can help people to gain deeper understanding of LETOR, and enable more interesting research projects on learning to rank and related topics.     

The California State University E-book Pilot Project: implications for cooperative collection development

The California State University conducted a year-long study of the use of a collection of NetLibrary e-books in its libraries. The purpose of the study was to introduce e-books, and develop a model for cooperative collection development of a shared electronic monograph collection. Title usage and subject usage statistics were examined, as well as a user survey. Challenges in analyzing e-book usage statistics are discussed, and positive user feedback is reported. Strategies are presented for cooperatively developing a shared collection of electronic monograph literature.     

Citation analysis for collection development: A study of international relations journal literature

By examining citations in international relations journal articles published between 2000 and 2005, this study reveals that international relations scholars more heavily rely on books rather than on journals. Less than 2% of the citations are from electronic resources. Materials in foreign languages are utilized insignificantly, with English language citations dominating the research literature. The analysis of subject scatter details the main disciplines that are associated with international relations research. Qualitative scholars cite a higher proportion of monographic literature, while quantitative scholars display a higher journal citation rate.

Epilepsy Abstracts Retrieval System (EARS): a new concept for medical literature storage and retrieval

Epilepsy Abstracts, a monthly publication of the National Institute of Neurological Diseases and Stroke, is used as the data base for an on-line full-text search and retrieval system. Every word in the abstract (except common words that possess no retrieval value) becomes a keyword, reducing the mismatch between the user's familiarity with word usage in the desired subject area and the word usage in the documents to be searched.

Crowdsourcing for information retrieval: introduction to the special issue

This introduction to the special issue summarizes and contextualizes six novel research contributions at the intersection of information retrieval (IR) and crowdsourcing (also overlapping crowdsourcing’s closely-related sibling, human computation). Several of the papers included in this special issue represent deeper investigations into research topics for which earlier stages of the authors’ research were disseminated at crowdsourcing workshops at SIGIR and WSDM conferences, as well as at the NIST TREC conference. Since the first proposed use of crowdsourcing for IR in 2008, interest in this area has quickly accelerated and led to three workshops, an ongoing NIST TREC track, and a great variety of published papers, talks, and tutorials. We briefly summarize the area in order to help situate the contributions appearing in this special issue. We also discuss some broader current trends and issues in crowdsourcing which bear upon its use in IR and other fields.     

Arabic literature: Uniterm indexing system for storage and retrieval

As centers of research and study in colleges and universities, Chinese academic libraries are heavily used and play a significant role in higher education. However, the level of administration can affect service to patrons and have an impact on their development. In this paper, the characteristics of administration in Chinese academic libraries are examined from both a historical perspective and current practice. The problems arising from the centralization of authority and administrative structure are also examined. Some possible suggestions are made of ways to improve library services in areas such as the quality of leadership, the creation of new positions, the increased responsibility of assistant directors, the re-organization of work distribution, the establishment of reference services, the development of faculty and staff participation in committee work, the importance of a library liaison program and the importance of designing a strategic plan for the library.     

Automated acquisitions: The future of collection development

Automation of vendor files and integrated library systems are changing (a) the process of collection development, (b) the role of the collection developer, (c) the relationship between libraries and vendors, and even (d) the library's organization. By combining files in the bibliographer's workstation, paraprofessional staff can select the core collection; professionals will focus on expensive or fringe titles. Programmed or mechanical selection can replace staff decisions in acquiring the core titles. Automation may increase successful cooperative collection development and expand the responsibilities of collection developers. Professional roles will change to include more policy, preservation, evaluation, and process assignments. Collection development activities may be decentralized and combined with reference and cataloging subject groups or become part of acquisitions processing teams.

Book allocations: The key to a plan for collection development

This article summarizes the development and execution of a system for collection development and materials control in an underfunded and understaffed college library. The Simmons College Library staff devised a plan for book budget allocations, evaluated its collection, and formulated a three-part collection development policy with working procedures. Its success requires a strong commitment from the library administration and draws on the collective abilities and participation of an entire library staff. It results in the more judicious expenditure of funds, enhanced communication with faculty, and a structure for long-term collection growth.
