The Importance of Language Strategy in Simple Arithmetic

Students who seemingly are about equally adept at two languages differ considerably in their language strategy in mental arithmetic. The present findings suggest that language strategy has an important effect on simple arithmetical performance, affecting the mean reaction time of responses, the frequency of errors, and the experience of difficulty. Bilinguals who retrospectively reported a single language strategy during task performance showed a clear tendency for faster response times, fewer errors, and less perceived difficulty than bilinguals who used their two languages simultaneously or interchangeably. The degree of interference that occurs seems to depend on individual strategies and can be held to a minimum if the domains of use are clearly defined.

Applying Multigroup Confirmatory Factor Models for Continuous Outcomes to Likert Scale Data Complicates Meaningful Group Comparisons

Treating Likert rating scale data as continuous outcomes in confirmatory factor analysis violates the assumption of multivariate normality. Given certain requirements pertaining to the number of categories, skewness, size of the factor loadings, and so forth, it seems nevertheless possible to recover true parameter values if the data stem from a single homogeneous population. It is shown that, in a multigroup context, an analysis of Likert data under the assumption of multivariate normality may distort the factor structure differently across groups. In that case, investigations of measurement invariance (MI), which are necessary for meaningful group comparisons, are problematic. Analyzing subscale scores computed from Likert items does not seem to solve the problem.

Treatment Comparisons

The purpose of this paper is to provide concrete illustrations of the efficacy of the multiple regression approach to the analysis of experimental results. A bridge between theoretical and specific applications is provided by parallel multiple regression and analysis of variance solutions for two typical educational designs. Detailed illustrations are given in the techniques of writing linear constraints and determining degrees of freedom. The major advantages of the multiple regression approach are its adaptability to unusual designs and the facilitation of meaningful interpretation afforded by the provision of regression weights in addition to the usual Fratios.
