Recent developments in statistics have enabled much more effective use to be made of examination results both in educational research and in school management. These developments, however, have assumed that the educational potential of pupils can be assessed by some measure external to the teaching context, such as score on a standardised test of verbal reasoning. This paper considers the extent to which examination results can be used in this way without such an external measure. A method is described which involves comparing a pupil's grade in a given subject with what that pupil would expect on the basis of his/her grades in other subjects taken at the same time. Evidence is presented which suggests that, for most subjects, the resulting measure of subject attainment is not affected by the nature of the catchment area. Applications of the method in studying subject‐based patterns at school, regional and national levels are explored and limitations to its use in research and management are outlined. 相似文献

Recent emphasis on raising attainment has focused attention onto the ‘gender gap’ in school attainment levels. Using data from the Scottish School Leavers Survey, the article examines factors related to high attainment and asks whether these differ for males and females. A strong relationship is established between social advantage and high attainment within each gender. There is no evidence of differential progression rates for males and females between the ages of 16 and 18. The only factor which offers any explanation for gender differences in attainment is the evidence that girls took school more seriously than boys. This supports theories that girls and boys experience different peer pressures which influence their school attainment. Other factors have also been shown to influence gender differences in performance in the research literature. Factors affecting gender differences were found equally in all schools, suggesting that wider cultural factors are also influential in creating gender differences. 相似文献

This study, using national surveys and multilevel models, examines the effectiveness of 4-year women-only and coeducational colleges in cultivating women students' intellectual development. No significant differential effect of attending either type of institution was discovered relative to students' critical thinking ability and analytical and problem-solving skills. Women-only colleges seem to provide neither a superior nor an inferior growth experience for female students compared with coeducational institutions. However, analyses suggest that women-only colleges have a significantly greater positive impact on development of intellectual self-confidence. Campus environment as well as college experiences of women students at women-only and coeducational colleges are discussed to explain the reasons for the differential institutional effect. Analyses also indicate that compared with female students in coeducational settings, students in women-only colleges are more likely to participate in college activities that are intellectually stimulating and cultivating. 相似文献

A good deal of research has tried to establish the precursors of literacy in terms of the abilities in children which are most likely to lead to good progress in reading and writing. As Monica Lazo and Peter Pumfrey point out, several aspects of metalinguistic ability have been identified as important and in their research, reported here, they found that three aspects of this ability were particularly significant to children's literacy development. These aspects, phonological awareness, print awareness and semantic/syntactic awareness seem to play crucial roles in children's reading and spelling but not in isolation. It is the combination of these which seems to make the difference, a finding with important implications for teachers of early literacy. 相似文献

Eight-year-old children were given a test of verbal-imagery learning style and the Neale Analysis of Reading Ability. Both reading accuracy and comprehension were found to be significantly related to learning style. Reading accuracy was highest at the extreme verbalizer end and lowest at the imager end of the verbal-imagery continuum, with a plateau of average performance at the central positions. The pattern for comprehension was similar. The results were discussed in terms of the manner in which individuals represent information during learning. 相似文献
