Report from Buenos Aires: The IFLA 2004 Conference

ABSTRACT

The 70th World Library and Information Congress, popularly known as the International Federation of Library Associations (IFLA) Conference, was held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, from 22–27 August 2004. This report provides an overview of the conference.     

Computers in Libraries 2000

Abstract

This article describes the proceedings of the Computers in Libraries 2000 Conference held in Washington, DC, March 15-17, 2000 at the Washington Hilton Towers. Both the content and value of the conference presentations to librarians in general and to librarians who specialize in service to undergraduate libraries are discussed. The highlights of the conference presentations and exhibits, conference costs, conference organization, and pre- and post-conference activities are presented, as well as a view of emerging trends evident at presentations.

Going digital: Strategies for transitioning a conference to an online format

When the Academic Library Association of Ohio (ALAO), Ohio's chapter of the Association of Academic & Research Libraries (ACRL), began planning for its 2020 conference, the COVID-19 pandemic hadn't yet begun. However, when COVID-19 arrived, the Conference Planning Committee was quickly compelled to make decisions about whether to move the conference online, how to deliver it in an online format, and how to help ALAO members adapt to the change. This article explores how decisions to move a conference online can be made and implemented while meeting the needs of the conference-planning organization and its members.

[目的/意义]电子健康会议（eHealth）在国际健康信息学领域有着重要的影响,通过对本次会议相关研讨主题的总结,以期为国内健康信息学的研究带来启示。[方法/过程]在葡萄牙丰沙尔举行的eHealth 2016会议,共收录研究长论文（full paper）20篇,此外,还收录了部分短论文、思考论文和海报等。通过综述这些论文的主要研究内容、研究方法和结果,展示欧洲主导的健康信息学研究的现状、新兴领域和发展趋势。[结果/结论]第八届国际电子健康会议作为健康信息学领域重要的学术会议,所涉及的主题涵盖了当前健康信息学理论研究与应用实践的最新成果,能够代表国际上此方面学术研究和技术发展的前沿。随着电子健康（eHealth）和移动健康（mHealth）的发展,"赋权消费者"已成为此领域研究的趋势。     

Jubilee Conference in Honor of the Eighty-Fifth Anniversary of the Russian Book Chamber

ABSTRACT

The jubilee conference in honor of the 85th anniversary of the Russian Book Chamber (RBC) consisted of three parts: the 10th International Conference on Issues of Bibliology, a conference of the Association of Book Chambers, and a ceremonial session. The bibliology conference, the most important part, included discussion of such pressing problems as the decline of reading and book-buying in Russia, the difficulty of distributing books outside of Moscow and St. Petersburg, and the problems caused by lack of modern equipment in printing establishments. But progress has also been made, e.g., the RBC's establishment of a single information platform for all participants in the book trade.     

Fee-Based Information Services: Overview of the Fourth International Conference and Future Trends

ABSTRACT

In October 1997 the Fourth International Conference on Fee-Based Information Services addressed fundamental issues on the global role of these services in libraries. The organizers and participants raised key questions on the future of information delivery in the context of the Web and the growing information economy. Throughout the conference, lively discussions by managers, administrators, and information professionals provided insights into existing and future scenarios. For those who missed the conference, and for library directors and practitioners, this conference overview provides a snapshot of fee-based services as we head into the next century.

Katina's baby: The Charleston acquisitions conference at 15

At 15, the Charleston Acquisitions Conference continues to be a success. It began as a regional conference with 32 participants and speakers and is now an international meeting with over 400 participants from the United States and other countries. The author first attempts to define an objective methodology for evaluating the success of professional meetings. Next he describes the conference and its evolution over time concentrating on the attendees, speakers, programs, publications, and he compares it to other acquisitions meetings. Finally, using the methodology developed earlier, the author discusses why Charleston is a successful conference.     

Systems thinking about acquisitions and serials issues and trends: A report on the 1993 Charleston Conference

The Charleston Conference, under the guiding light of Katina Strauch, now looks back upon a rich tradition of information-packed sessions. This report attempts to synthesize the massive data gathered at the 1993 conference in a way that will organize the issues for both those attending and those not there. The author chose the theme, systems thinking, to illustrate how interrelated many scholarly communications issues really are. Topics covered ranged from document delivery to collection assessment, from electronic data interchange to current trends in publishing. The article is presented with a thematic approach, looking at the talks from four angles: perspective, context, evaluation, and communication.

New Directions,New Relationships: The Smithsonian's Twenty‐first Century Learning in Natural History Settings Conference and the Natural History Museum,London

The Twenty‐first Century Learning in Natural History Settings Conference at the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C. (2012) has been more influential than similar conferences, resulting in new work streams and international collaborations for the Learning Research and Evaluation team at the Natural History Museum, London (NHM). The conference offered a rare opportunity to discuss issues relevant to our unique workplace and to be surrounded by an instant peer group. Although the event itself brought personal and professional satisfaction, it is the impact of the conference on our institution that has been most fulfilling. The conference has enabled us to think bigger—to think about the sector as a whole and the role the NHM can play as a large national museum.     

Content analysis as a means of exploring research opportunities from a conference programme

Background: Health librarians should keep up-to-date in a dynamic environment and accept the importance of continuing personal development (CPD) and growth in their critical reflection and creative thinking skills. They also need to acknowledge the potential value of research activity and the challenges of ongoing improvement and development. Conference programmes may prove a useful source of stimulation, especially if supplemented by creativity techniques, action research and the ideal of 'finding flow'. Objectives: The article analyses the themes and papers presented at the 10th International Conference on International Medical Librarianship (ICML) to identify opportunities for further research, literature reviews, assessment of practices and services, etc. Methods: Content analysis approach to conference papers and suggestions for further action including supplementing with techniques of creativity and group input. Results: A fairly extensive list of further actions (although not intended to be exhaustive) is suggested for the sixteen conference themes. Although subjective, the list might help to stimulate growth in research on health librarianship and demonstrate how one source of stimulation - conference programmes (regularly presented to medical library communities) - can be used. Conclusions: Content analysis has proven a constructive means of generating research questions from a conference programme. Content analysis and other methods aimed at stimulating creative and progressive thinking, including brainstorming, force field analysis, De Bono's 6 hats, creative swiping and creative visualisation, may prove equally useful and require further investigation. To ensure an ongoing cycle, these can be linked to action research.     

基于众包的开放会议资源建设-以开放会议资源服务系统为例

[目的/意义]鉴于开放资源建设实践面临困境,将众包引入开放会议资源服务系统(简称"系统"),以提高其开放会议资源建设效率。[方法/过程]采用经验总结法分析"系统"现有资源建设模式的不足,结合实际,从基于众包的资源建设工作流程、众包平台开发与功能设计、系统功能与服务完善3方面构建开放会议资源众包建设模式。[结果/结论]资源众包建设模式能增加系统所需的人力、智力资源,提高资源建设效率,实现丰富系统开放会议资源、获得更多使用的建设目的。开放会议资源建设众包模式能提高"系统"的工作效率,可为其他图书馆的开放会议资源建设借鉴和参考。
