Sexual abuse by grandparents.

Using a sample of 95 case records of sexual abuse substantiated through child protection investigation, this study confirmed several findings from earlier studies of sexually abusive grandparents: (a) virtually all perpetrators are male, (b) the vast majority of victims are female, (c) a disproportionately large share of abusive grandfathers appear to also be sexually abusive fathers, and (d) stepgrandchildren appear to experience greater risk. Additionally, it was noted that stepgrandparent perpetrators were more threatening and physically violent. However, contrary to some earlier studies, evidence was provided that this form of abuse is inappropriately described as "gentle." Explicit threats and overt physical assault were noted in 14 cases. Moreover, the other tactics used to gain children's compliance, such as overpowering them, suddenly grabbing their genitals, and attacking them in their sleep, appeared to seriously compromise children's autonomy and personal integrity.

The author, Leona E. Tyler, is a now retired Professor of Psychology at the University of Oregon. She is well known for her career‐long research and writing on individual differences. The reviewer, Richard E. Snow, is Professor of Education and Psychology, Stanford University. His research interests center on individual differences in aptitude and learning.

Peripheral discrimination by three-month-old infants.

3-month-old infants made 2 types of discrimination with their peripheral vision. They discriminated between grossly different figures placed as far out as 30 degrees toward the periphery, and they discriminated between more subtly different figures, which differed only in the shape of their internal elements, out to 10 degrees. The results imply that infants can readily process stimuli with peripheral vision.

冯特的《民族心理学》包括四个主要部分 :原始人 ;图腾制度 ;英雄与神的时代 ;人性的发展。冯特的民族心理学研究为心理学开拓了一个十分广阔、亟待开展的新领域。受冯特研究之启 ,我国心理学家在我国西南和西北地区做了许多民族心理的实证研究 ,取得了一定的研究成果。但目前仍存在民族心理研究底子薄 ,研究人员少 ,研究条件差等诸多困难与问题 ,这既不利于民族心理学的发展 ,也不利于各民族的发展。对于一个民族大国而言 ,民族心理研究亟待加强。
