Cooperation Between Circulation and Reference Departments in Academic Health Sciences Libraries

User education, public relations, and reference questions are areas of library service which involve both the reference and circulation departments in academic health sciences libraries. In other ways, however, the two departments function independently in the provision of services. For accurate role perceptions to exist among staff members, there is a need to define clearly the functional boundary between the two departments. The key to increasing cooperation and encouraging joint efforts lies in understanding the public service roles of each department.

Social Media Use in Academic Libraries: A Phenomenological Study

Academic libraries are increasingly engaged on social media in order to connect with diverse community groups and move beyond the traditional bounds of the library. This research uses a phenomenological approach and Institutional Theory to explore social media postings at six different public and private university libraries in two Midwest states. The research addresses what themes emerge among the university library's social media pages and what, if any, differences in themes emerge based on the status of the library in question. Social media postings included ten different codes: archives; collections; events; exhibits; facility; library community; sentiments; services; site management; and university community. These codes were tied to three different themes: libraries create a sense of outreach and advocacy with the goal of establishing community connection, providing an inviting environment, and access to content as needed or desired. Ultimately, while libraries at universities with an ARL library or an MLS granting degree program showed a similar breakdown between these three themes, libraries at other master's degree institutions spent less time on making community connections in lieu of posting content and information about the library's environment.

The Growing Crisis: Scholarly Publishing Pressures Facing Health Sciences Libraries

ABSTRACT

Health sciences librarians work within a complex environment, one that quickly adopted access to electronic resources. The open access movement evolved as an alternative to traditional publishing as prices for STM e-journals steadily increased, but it also raised issues and concerns for authors within the more traditional biomedical culture. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Public Access policy provided an opportunity to support researchers’ compliance with the policy, while advocating for open access and author rights. As an outgrowth of the NIH policy, health sciences libraries have promoted open access through a variety of activities within their academic health centers.     

Millennials among the Professional Workforce in Academic Libraries: Their Perspective on Leadership

This study explores possible leadership perceptions of Millennials working in academic libraries, specifically their definition, the attributes they associate with leadership, whether they want to assume formal leadership roles, whether they perceive themselves as leaders, and whether they perceive leadership opportunities within their organizations and LIS professional associations. An online survey was utilized to gather the responses and the study participants comprised of Millennials (born 1982 or after) currently working full-time in libraries that were a member of the Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC), a consortium of the Big Ten universities and the University of Chicago in 2011–12.

广州地区高校图书馆阅读推广调查研究

以调查数据为依据,在分析广州地区高校图书馆阅读推广现状的基础上,指出阅读推广中存在的问题,提出旨在提升高校图书馆阅读推广的建议和对策：改变“阅读推广非高校图书馆主流业务”的观念．提升阅读推广馆员素质、加强阅读推广活动的策划和评估、利用新信息技术推进阅读的开展、积极开展社会化服务和参与全民阅读活动。     

An End User Search Service in an Academic Health Sciences Library

This paper describes the experience of an academic health sciences library which made BRS/After Dark, an end user search service, available to its clientele as a complement to its mediated search service. The library environment, initial publicity efforts and administrative procedures are discussed. An attempt is made to evaluate the usefulness of the service in a library environment. This evaluation, covering a three-month period, is based on the observations of the librarians administering the service and an exit interview conducted with searchers over a two-month period. User satisfaction, both observed and recorded, was quite high; however, the librarians found that users had more difficulty in constructing appropriate search strategies than had been anticipated. Overall, the service is assessed as highly useful.

Access to U.S. Government Periodicals in Health Sciences Libraries

The paper discusses the state of access to government periodical information in health sciences libraries. A scan of titles listed in major medical periodical indexes indicates that few government titles are regularly covered. Analysis of 1974 and 1984 Monthly Catalog listings for periodicals produced by the Department of Health, Education and Welfare and its successor, the Health and Human Services Department, indicates a shift in the subjcct orientation and overall format of periodicals issued. Some special characteristics of medical libraries which exacerbate the problem of limited access are also briefly considered.

Marketing Videos in Academic Libraries:

In some libraries, the video collection is not accessible to browsing patrons and is overlooked as an information source. To publicize Stetson University Library's video collection, staff sent annotated subject bibliographies of video titles to faculty. To generate the bibliographies, staff created a database and sorted the records into bibliographies for each department. Faculty received subject bibliographies relevant to the classes taught each semester. During the first month of the project's implementation, video circulation increased significantly over the pervious year's level and faculty reaction was positive.     

Nonusers of Academic Libraries:

This essay proposes the identification and study of nonusers of academic library reference services. Using the techniques previously applied to different classes of public library users, researchers could benefit from information already available, as well as undertake survey research on lifestyles in academe. The discussion puts forth the claim that nonusers of academic libraries are potential users belonging to the same three groups as current users: faculty, staff, and students. A brief overview of the results of the application of lifestyles research to public library user groups is provided. Finally, the article describes some lifestyle characteristics of each of the three groups and their possible implications for academic library reference services.
