U.S. patents form the largest and most comprehensive body of technological literature in the world. The Patent and Trademark Office has greatly expanded its dissemination efforts in response to the interest and need for technological information, increasing to 58 the number of Patent Depository Libraries able to bring patent collections closer to those who need them. The effectiveness of this program could be magnified by enlisting local Government Printing Office depository libraries in cooperative networks. A model for establishing such a network is suggested, based on the experience of New Mexico.  相似文献

The development of medical librarianship during the last forty years is examined as reflected in the changes of its resources, technology, education, and knowledge base. A shift from historical to scientific inquiry constitutes the direction of medical librarianship. Its nexus is the gathering of information and the transfer of knowledge. The social and human resources for this ongoing change and the basis for a quest for excellence is seen in the pool of talent represented by hospital librarians and the aspirations of the women's movement for equality.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: The authors sought to identify opportunities for partnership between the communities of public health workers and health sciences librarians. METHODS: The authors review competencies in public health and health sciences librarianship. They highlight previously identified public health informatics competencies and the Medical Library Association's essential areas of knowledge. Based on points of correspondence between the two domains, the authors identify specific opportunities for partnership. RESULTS: The points of correspondence between public health and health sciences librarianship are reflected in several past projects involving both communities. These previous collaborations and the services provided by health sciences librarians at many public health organizations suggest that some health sciences librarians may be considered full members of the public health workforce. Opportunities remain for productive collaboration between public health workers and health sciences librarians. CONCLUSIONS: Drawing on historical and contemporary experience, this paper presents an initial framework for forming collaborations between health sciences librarians and members of the public health workforce. This framework may stimulate thinking about how to form additional partnerships between members of these two communities.  相似文献

Inferential statistics and librarianship   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This study examines the extent to which inferential statistics were used in research articles published between 2001 and 2005 in professional journals that academic and public librarians are most likely to read. It also explores the kinds of inferential statistics most commonly used, and whether academic and public librarians authored research articles using inferential statistics. Compared with the findings of studies conducted in the 1970s and the 1980s, there is an increase in the use of inferential statistics in articles appearing in professional journals read by academic and public librarians. These results suggest that educators who believe that learning about inferential statistics should become an important component of every librarian's education may be correct, especially because the evolving nature of librarianship has placed new emphasis on performance measures, outcomes assessment, and evidence-based decision making, which often rely on sophisticated analyses of quantitative data.  相似文献

This paper reviews the current situation in library school education for medical librarianship in the United States and Canada based on information from a questionnaire sent to teachers of courses in medical librarianship in accredited library schools. Since 1939, when the first course devoted entirely to medical librarianship was offered at Columbia University, courses have been introduced into the curricula of at least forty-seven of the ALA-accredited library schools. In 1978 there were seventy courses available through forty-seven library schools. Possibilities for specialization in medical librarianship are examined. Course content is reviewed. Implications of the MLA certification examination for library school courses are explored.  相似文献
