China＇s Largest Remote Sensing Research Institute Opens in Beijing

On April 22,2013 , the CAS Institute of Remote Sensing and Digital Earth （RADI）, China＇s largest in the field, convened a meeting to mark its formal inauguration. Its title plate was jointly unveiled by senior officials, including Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People＇s Political Consultative Conference （CPPCC） WANG Qinmin, CAS President BAI Chunli, former Chinese S＆T Minister XU Guanhua, CAS Vice President YIN Hejun, CAS Member SUN Honglie and RADI Director- General GUO Huadong.     

Cooler temperatures inductive to locust outbreaks

Ajoint study by Prof. ZHANG Zhibin from the CAS Institute of Zoology and his co-workers from Norway, US and Swiss have indicated that historical outbreaks of migratory locusts in China were associated with cold spells, suggesting that China＇s projected climate warming could decrease the pest＇s numbers. The study was published in Proceedings of theNational Academy of Sciences on 17 September, 2007.     

Science academy leaders meet to discuss innovation systems in Beijing

To mark the 30th anniversary of China＇s reform and opening-up and the lOthanniversary of the CAS Knowledge Innovation Program, a forum was held under the auspices of CAS from 11 to 14 November, 2008, in Beijing. Leaders of State science institutions from 16 countries across the world were present at the meeting to address the roles of their organizations in a national innovation system.     

CAS scientists active in earthquake relief operation

Soon after the devastating earthquake taking place on last 12 May in Sichuan, the CAS leadership promptly mobilized its researchers to dedicate their expertise to the nationwide drive of the disaster＇s relief and reduction. A leading group was established to coordinate the Academy＇s efforts in this regard. All of the eight CAS institutions located in Sichuan were organized to do everything possible to reduce their losses to the minimum. At the same time, a trans-departmental and interdisciplinary taskforce was formed to provide a powerful S＆T backing for the nationwide drive.     

China honors outstanding scientists and research achievements for 2011

On February 14, 2012, an annual ceremony was convened at the Great Hall of the People to honor China’s distinguished scientists and outstanding science and technology achievements. Physicist XIE Jialin (P.136) and architect WU Liangyong (P.140), both members of CAS, received the State Supreme S&T Award from Chinese President HU Jintao. Among award-winning projects which were chaired by CAS researchers, 13 won the State Natural Sciences Award (P.146), 6 the State Technology Invention Award and 12 the S&T Advancement Award.     

Sixty Years of the Chinese Academy of Sciences

The Chinese Academy of Sciences （CAS） was founded on 1 November, 1949, one month after the establishment of New China. Over the past six decades, CAS has established itself as China＇s top academic institution in natural science, the country＇s most comprehensive R＆D center in natural science and high-technology, and the nation＇s highest advisory body in science and technology. The following is a review of CAS development over the past 60 years in various aspects ranging from research into basic sciences, the environment and natural resources, life sciences and high-technology, to talent training, activities of Academic Divisions and international cooperation.     

CAS Maps Out a Blueprint for Its Future Development

At the enlarged summer session of the Party’s Leading Group at CAS held from July 25 to 29 in Beijing, the CAS leadership called for imple- menting the third-phase work of the Knowledge Innovation Program (KIP) through innovation and reform, so as to open up new pros- pects for CAS development in the years to come. To serve and promote science development via innovation

CAS should stick to the principle of rendering service to, and giving impetus for, the development of China＇s science enterprise by making S＆T innovations, said CAS President LU Yongxiang. The CAS president made the remarks in a recent talk to communicate the gist of the winter session of the Party＇s Leading-member Group at CAS, which was held from 7 to 11 January in Beijing.

An Atlas Reveals Vegetation Regionalization Details of China

The compiling and digitalization of the Vegetation Map of the People’s Republic of China (1:1,000,000) was finally completed with the efforts of three generations of Chinese scientists, a total of more than 200 S&T workers. Main contributors to the project include CAS Members HOU Xueyu and ZHANG Xinshi, Profs. SUN Shizhou and HE Miaoguan, who are all from the CAS Institute of Botany, and Prof.     

The 10th Session of the Fourth CAS Presidium Held in Beijing

Chaired by Prof. LuYongxiang, executive chairman of the CAS Presidium and president of CAS, the 10th session of the fourth CAS Presidium was held on September 2 in Beijing. The CAS Presidium is the standing leading body of the CAS General Assembly, the highest organ of the CAS Academic Divisions (CASAD).     

CAS forum for young scientists held in Yunnan

Co-organized by the CAS Graduate University （GUCAS） and the CAS Kunming Branch, 2007 Sciencel00, a CAS annual forum for outstanding young scientists, was opened on 28 November, 2007 at the CAS Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden （XTBG）, with an attendance of more than 90 experts and scholars from various CAS affiliates.

Maiden voyage of a novel research ship

Shiyan-1, a new research vessel of CAS, recently accomplished its first official journey in South China Sea. CAS leaders, including CAS President LU Yongxiang and CAS Vice President JIANG Mianheng, were present at the ceremony marking its maiden voyage held on 9 May in Sanya City, south China＇s Hainan Province.     

CAS announces new academicians

Twenty-nine prominent Chinese scientists have been elected as CAS Members and five of their colleagues from US, France and Russia as CAS Foreign Members in 2007. The announcement was made by CAS Vice President LI Jinghai at a press conference held on 27 December, 2007 in Beijing. CAS President LU Yongxiang was present at the meeting.     

CAS Invites International Panel to Evaluate Its Institute

At the invitation of the CAS, a group of eight international experts convened in Nanjing on October 7th and 8th to evaluate the CAS Nanjing Institute of Geology and Paleontology (NIGPAS). This is the first move of its kind ever made by CAS at the academy level. Earlier this year several CAS institutes had made similar assessments by themselves.

CAS Center for Space Environment Research and Prediction Established

The opening ceremony for the newly established CAS Center for Space Environment Research and Prediction was held on Nov. 10 at the CAS Center for Space Science and Applied Research. CAS Vice President Jiang Mianheng and Vice Minister of the State Commission of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense,Luan Enjie, officiated at the ceremony.
