Migration to an electronic journal collection in a hospital library: implications for reference service

This article provides a perspective on the migration to an electronic-only journal collection in a hospital library and its effect on reference services, information-seeking, and library use patterns. Bellevue Hospital Center in New York, NY is one of the first major teaching hospitals in the United States to begin a fundamental shift to a current, electronic-only journal collection. This article describes the process and develops a model for use by other hospital libraries, with commentary on the impact on reference services to library users. Key findings are that physicians, residents, and nurses have come to expect electronic journal collections and use the Internet in the hospital library to access electronic journals. Similar to many academic health sciences libraries, the reference desk in a hospital library has become more like a technical support desk. Users who contact the library have questions about access to the library's electronic resources or about searching techniques. In the future, medical reference librarians will continue to assist searchers who cannot find what they are looking for and will assist those who repeatedly get results that do not match their information needs.

针对目前电子期刊出版业普遍存在编辑人员流动性大、复合型多媒体制作人才缺乏等诸多问题,中华医学电子音像出版社从实际情况出发,制定近期编辑人才培养计划及其实施方案,要求电子期刊编辑人员必须掌握传统纸质期刊编辑出版基本流程、规范、要求及标准,熟悉多媒体课件制作流程中采、编、摄、制及光盘制作开发工具和相关应用软件,掌握网站建设、网页设计及相关网络出版知识和技能,力求从多方面着手培养复合型编辑人才。

再论《吴医汇讲》为中国期刊发端 ——兼与《中国期刊史》第1卷作者商榷

采用史料考证方法,对《吴医汇讲》出版形式、内容、编者意图、作用功能再次进行考证。分析1927—2018年有关《吴医汇讲》和《察世俗每月统记传》研究的主要著作和学术论文,研究18—19世纪东南亚一带华人的数量、生活及文化。认为:中国期刊与中文期刊的概念不能混淆;《吴医汇讲》是由我国古代图书衍化发展而诞生的,是我国期刊的发端;学界普遍认为《察世俗每月统记传》是第一本中文期刊的观点缺乏科学统计;在姚远等的《再论吴医汇讲为中国科技期刊的肇端》一文基础上,发现《吴医汇讲》第11卷可能为单卷发行文字证据。

为弥补编辑初审、专家外审、主编定稿的常规审稿模式可能产生的局限性,《中华围产医学杂志》利用每月召开的专家定稿会,对终审的每篇文章从创新性、科学性、实用性等方面,广泛听取专家意见,客观公正地评价稿件,决定稿件的去留。专家定稿会既提高了期刊学术质量,也提高了编辑专业素养。     

A journal club is an effective tool for assisting librarians in the practice of evidence-based librarianship: a case study

OBJECTIVE: To establish a journal club for librarians, which aimed to develop appraisal skills and assist in the application of research to practice. METHODS: Fourteen health librarians were invited to attend a journal club. Each month a librarian was responsible for preparing a scenario, choosing a research paper, and selecting a checklist. The paper was appraised by the club, and a critically appraised topic (CAT) prepared. Six months later, a questionnaire was sent to all librarians. RESULTS: Six out of 14 librarians attended the journal club and five out of six returned the questionnaire. All five agreed that attending the journal club helped them develop appraisal skills, write a CAT and be more critical of research. Four agreed they always identified a research paper first, then formulated a question. One librarian agreed that applying results to their own practice was difficult, one disagreed and three were neutral. CONCLUSION: Journal clubs can be effective at developing appraisal skills and writing a CAT, as well as increasing the reading of library research. Librarians still need assistance in identifying and using questions directly from their own practice. The journal club has helped some librarians to apply evidence to practice, but others find the research is not always directly relevant.     

A new approach to collection bias in academic libraries: The extent of corporate control in journal holdings

Questions of collection bias in library journal collections usually turn on a left-right political contrast. This article presents another approach that distinguishes between corporate and non-corporate controlled publications. Using this method, the catalog holdings of all Canadian academic libraries were searched to determine the penetration of socio-political titles of mainstream “corporate publishers” and those of “small publishers.” Canadian academic libraries privilege, by a wide margin, mainstream titles published by corporate entities, although some libraries have impressive “small publisher” collections. This article also analyzed the availability of mainstream and small publisher journals provided by ten popular electronic vendors. These vendors provide very low access to non-corporate “small publisher” titles while covering 100% of surveyed mainstream titles. The implications of such provision rates are examined from the perspective of the scholarly browsing process and the role of the university.     

Predicting research excellence at the individual level: The importance of publication rate,top journal publications,and top 10% publications in the case of early career mathematicians

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between publication rate, top journal publications and excellence during the first eight years of the career, and how well publication rate, top journal publications and highly cited publications during the first four years of the career can predict whether an author attain excellence in the fifth to the eighth year. The dataset consisted of publication track records of 406 early career mathematicians in the sub-field of number theory collected from the MathSciNet database. Logistic regression and dominance analysis was applied to the data. The major conclusions were (1) publication rate had a positive effect on excellence during the first eighth years of the career. However, those who publish many articles in top journals, which implicitly require a high publication count, had an even higher probability of attaining excellence. These results suggest that publishing in top journals is very important in the process of attaining excellence in the early career in addition to publishing many papers; and (2) a dominance analysis indicated that the number of top journal publications and highly cited publications during the first four years of the career were the most important predictors of who will attain excellence in the later career. The results are discussed in relation to indicator development and science policy.

The devil in the details: An academic library acquires a video collection

What happened when an educational video collection arrived on an academic library's doorstep? Decisions about cataloging, processing, shelving, and circulation inevitably followed, but equally important was providing uninterrupted access for the collection's borrowers. Although the relocation plan devised by the library director and circulation librarian retained the “new” collection's unique classification scheme and kept it shelved apart from the library's video collection for at least 1 year, after Technical Services librarians joined the discussion, they proposed immediate and full integration. Their strategy included extensive communication with the videos' borrowers as the collection arrived in the library. Relocating the videos to the library dramatically improved access and circulation.     

Inside the front door: Tailoring a leisure reading collection to attract an academic population

While some academics still maintain that an academic library is no place for leisure reading, many are in favor of maintaining at least a small distinct collection of such books. Strategically located and attractively displayed, current popular titles have the potential to generate traffic to the library and improve circulation statistics. Having taken the leap at Florida Gulf Coast University Library, a close statistical analysis of this new collection’s circulation over time has revealed not only that we all use it, but also that there are diverse but consistent patterns and preferences at play. Could the collection’s circulation rate be increased by tailoring it to an academic population? This study was designed to find out.
