Pedagogical stylistics: A text world theory approach to the teaching of poetry

This article explores how the stylistic framework of Text World Theory ( Werth 1999 , Gavins 2007 ) can be used in the classroom to generate critical insights and analyses of the ways in which texts operate. This approach falls within the scope of the discipline of pedagogical stylistics and as such it will examine and consider its usefulness as a teaching model to encourage both student awareness of language and wider consideration and understanding of the interaction between readers and texts, including intertextuality and the positioning of the text in its socio-historical context.

The practitioner-scholars' view of school change: A case-based approach to teaching and learning

This paper contends that a course in school change must tap into the lived experiences of practitioners; thereby arguing for a cased-based learning experience in which practitioners reflect critically on their own practice and develop a sound rationale for change. Placing the practitioner's “own” stories at the center of this experience revealed many compelling themes. Three that are addressed in this article include: (1) that the change process address loss, gain, and healing; (2) that change be committed to a vision that benefits all children; and (3) that commitment, community, and communication are key aspects of a change process that is led by a champion.

Implementing a teaching approach based on the multiple intelligence theory in a South African school: A case study

Abstract

This article reports on the implementation of a teaching approach based on Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences (MI) at a school in the Hammanskraal area in Gauteng, South Africa. The aim was to determine the impact that such an approach would have on teachers, learners and learner performance. This article discusses the implementation process and the impact thereof on learner results and conduct, as well as learners' opinion on the implementation of the MI approach in the classroom. The study showed that the implementation of a new approach should be monitored regularly and that teachers should receive ample support. An MI approach to teaching had a positive influence on learners' conduct and academic achievement. It also made learners more aware of their own strengths and weaknesses and how to overcome weaknesses. Learners indicated that they prefer an MI approach in teaching.

Arts‐based responses to teaching poetry: a literature review of dance and visual arts in poetry education

This study investigates the use of dance and visual arts in poetry education by systematically reviewing peer‐reviewed articles published on the topic from 2000 to 2019. The review focuses on empirical results in studies concerned with using dance and visual arts in poetry education and implications for poetry pedagogy in research and practice. The review encompasses 21 articles that were analysed thematically. The thematic analysis yielded seven themes: expand and deepen understandings of poetry; break curricular boundaries; interaction and collaboration; personal knowledge, reflection and experience; increase interest, motivation and confidence; challenges, limitations and constraints; and disciplinary knowledge. With research on this topic having increased in the 2010s, the findings show the potentials and challenges of using dance and visual arts in different ways in poetry education. Still, the research field is understudied, and many questions remain unanswered. Consequently, this study concludes with suggestions for future research on arts‐based responses in poetry education. The study adds to the dialogue on poetry education and contributes to raising awareness of the possibilities and challenges of using dance and visual arts in the poetry classroom.
